Kurzbeschreibung

30. September 2014 Meg Langslow Mysteries (Buch 16)

This time, Meg has got herself into a Holy mess!

"A yuletide funfest."—Richmond Times-Dispatch

In Duck the Halls, the brilliantly funny Donna Andrews delivers boughs of holly and barrels of laughs with Meg's latest adventure in her award-winning, New York Times bestselling series. A few nights before Christmas, Meg Langslow is awakened when volunteer fireman Michael is summoned to the New Life Baptist Church, where someone has rigged a cage full of skunks in the choir loft. The lengthy process of de-skunking the church requires its annual pre-Christmas concert to relocate to Trinity Episcopal, where Mother insists the show must go on, despite the budget-related protests of Mr. Vess, an elderly vestryman. Meanwhile, when Meg helps her grandfather take the skunks to the zoo, they discover that his boa has been stolen. . .only to turn up later during the concert, slithering out from the ribbon-bedecked evergreens. The next morning is Sunday, and the congregation of St. Byblig’s, the local Catholic church, arrives to find it completely filled with several hundred ducks.

"Extravagantly funny." —Publishers Weekly

It’s clear that some serious holiday pranksters are on the loose, and Meg is determined to find them. But before she can, a fire breaks out at Trinity, and Mr. Vess is found dead. Who would have murdered such a harmless—if slightly cranky—old man? Who has the time, during the busy holiday season, to herd all of these animals into the town’s churches? And will Meg ever be able to finish all of her shopping, wrapping, cooking, caroling, and decorating in time for Christmas Eve?

"A quirky…humorous…holiday treat." —Booklist

4.0 von 5 Sternen My Favorite Mystery Series 27. November 2013
Von Eva
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Skunks in the Baptists’ choir loft, an emerald tree boa in the Episcopalians’ Christmas decorations, and several hundred ducks in the Catholics’ sanctuary - a prankster is targeting the churches of Caerphilly and, as usual, it falls to Meg Langslow to clean up the resulting mess. And that’s before a dead body is found in the basement (the ‘undercroft’ as Meg’s mother insists on calling it) of Trinity Episcopal.

As with most of the Meg Langslow books, the mystery takes a backseat to the general mayhem that is Meg’s family. The pranks start happening right at the beginning of the story but the murder doesn’t happen until about halfway through. This time, there isn’t only one mystery but three interwoven ones (the prankster, the murder, and an attempted theft).
All the characters, even the secondary ones, have distinct personalities and it’s great fun to see what they’re up to this time. While this book can be read as a standalone, much of the enjoyment (in my opinion at least) is derived from seeing the latest antics of already beloved characters like Meg’s father and her brother Rob.
I especially enjoyed hearing about some of the characters that didn’t show up in the last couple of books. We get a quick update on what Eileen, Timmy, and Dr. Smoot (among others) are up to. Also, Michael’s mom makes a reappearance (finally!) and stages a duel with Meg’s mother over who can produce the most outlandish Christmas dinner. We also get to meet the formidable Judge Jane. Her ‘courtroom’ scene is a hoot.

This is a humorous cozy mystery where the emphasis is definitely on the humor. If that’s what you’re looking for, I can only recommend this book and all the others in the Meg Langslow series.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Getting back in the right direction 21. Februar 2014
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe|Verifizierter Kauf
After I was very disapointed from the last two books of the Meg Langslow Mysteries this one is getting closer to the original way of writing. However still I am missing the interacting of the characters like they were before. Meg's father was hardly mentioned, her mom obviously turned into a saint and Rob was barely mentioned. It was nice but I was a little disapointed to know the killer even before the murder was committed. Hope the improvement for the next one will continue and I am more than happy to rate five stars again - this one just gets (barely) four stars!

4.0 von 5 Sternen I love Meg and her family, unconditionally 31. Oktober 2013
Von M. C. Carter - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
Are the later books as laugh out loud funny as Peacocks, Puffins, etc? Maybe not but a lot of that is familiarity. In the same way that Lucy wasn't always at the top of her game, the Watterson-Langslows aren't either. But they are warm, loving, more than a tad bit crazy and I wait anxiously and eagerly for the next offering. Ducks didn't disappoint. One thing I would like to see is a bit more of Michael. The older the twins get, the less involved Michael is in Meg's daily routine and I do think that hurts the books some. The mystery doesn't really matter to me I am just happy to be invited to the next family get together....

5.0 von 5 Sternen Christmas Magic! 22. Oktober 2013
Von Elizabeth Etzel - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This is Donna Andrews second Holiday book. Meg and Michael's twin boys are 3 or 4, Michael and Rob have joined the volunteer fire department and Meg does what she does best: organize.
She has to find places for the New Life Baptist Choir to rehearse and perform their Christmas concert after the choirloft is skunked, The Catholic Church is out due to an influx of ducks in the sanctuary (around 100 of them). Trinity Episcopalian (or is it Anglican?) hosts the concerts until a burned body is found in the undercroft.
Being Christmas, we get Michael' Dickens performance, competing dinners and lots of love.

Another stellar entry in the series from Donna Andrews. I particularly loved the ending, thought it was very much in line with exactly why I love this series and the Langslow/Hollingsworth/Waterston families.
