One hundred years in the future, enormous mining vessels scour the surface of the Moon, prospecting for valuable metals and minerals. Trapped onboard for months at a time, the crew use drugs, virtual environments, gambling and pitfights to make life bearable.

Joel Miller doesn’t need any of those things. He has a new reason to live. An enemy.

Miller’s hatred of co-worker Reese has become an all-consuming vendetta. Unable to fight openly, their private war was waged in secret, until now. Now it’s to the death.

But Miller has no idea that there’s a hidden side to his duel. The hate keeping him alive is the most valuable commodity the Moon has to offer...

'Duallists' is a 50,000 word science fiction thriller from the author of the Auto Series.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Keeps you guessing 13. August 2014

I've read and enjoyed many of the author's other book (especially the Auto series) but for some reason this one has languished on my TBR list for a long time. I've no idea why and it was a foolish move on my part because this is an excellent read. It's a sci-fi tale of man working as part of a mining operation on the Moon. The story centres around an obsession he has in out-doing one of his co-workers. In fact it's got so out of hand that there is a vendetta between the two men.

For me good sci-fi is about answering big questions and this story does so although in a quite subtle way. Through the main character we discover how the world has changed and it paints quite a distopian image of the future. It's also interesting to see how progress in certain areas impacts the lives of individuals as well as society as a whole.

I also appreciate stories that manage to surprise me. Even as more is revealed throughout the story I never had a complete handle on what was actually going on and right up to the end it sucker punched me with the ending. As with the author's books it is very well written and moves along at a decent pace. A recommended reads for science fiction fans.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Moonbug violence 23. August 2014

A nice touch of scifi here as we become immersed in mining on the moon. The conflict rears its ugly head soon in the story as the protagonist goes up against his nemesis, Reese. He would really like to get into a contest with him, even to the kill. He gets his chance just before he leaves for Earth, and meets Reese as an animal. This is all part of the entertainment and betting on Moonbug.

Stark, violent, raw and savage, this is the story of a man in a vendetta against another worker, which escalates until either one or both may be killed. BUT, not everything is what it seems, as these two trade dirty deeds and blows within the insular moon mining colony. A fast paced, first person POV story that packs a punch. Recommended!

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Sci-Fi Gem 7. Juli 2014
Von Mr. C. Bailey - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
Hello everyone. I've never left a review for a book before. I don't know why... Anyway, here's my first:

I'll start off by admitting that Duallists was completely different to what I expected. The first person perspective of Joel Miller was an excellent decision from a writing point, giving the reader a glaring look into his every emotion.

Starting off as a slow burner, you feel lost within Joel's world almost immediately and it's not long before you believe this could be a true story. The author has created such a descriptive and realist take of life on the Moon, that you cant help but wonder whether he has travelled back from the future.

It might sound silly, but with every little detail carefully depicted and executed in a flawless fashion... you find yourself imagining the vivid, vibrant world Mr. Wailing has created. As you continue to read on, you learn more about Miller, his past and how lunar life has effected his well-being.

Towards the later stages of the book, you are hit by a lightening bolt of a chapter, titled: Chimera. This showcases the writers brilliance and originality... I won't spoil it but it's certainly the highlight for me. Then as to propel my opinion of Duallists, you are hit by a twist, that I for one didn't see coming.

Now it's over, I feel confident in saying that this is one of the best Sci-Fi books I've read in a long time. And even though Joel millers story is over... I honestly feel it deserves multiple readings, just to experience Millers deeply disturbing life once more.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Gritty scifi 27. Juni 2014

I enjoy stand alone books. Complete stories that suck you in, thrill and then spit you out. This is one of those gritty tales set in a mining station on the Moon in a vaguely dystopian future. The writing is at times visceral. The main character is complex and your understanding of them shifts as the story progresses. The story culminates in a Alice in Wonderland all is not as it seems ending where the enemy is defeated twice. The book was very worth the asking price (as long as it is $5 or below).
