Surprisingly Thorough

At first glance at the title of this book, you might be tempted to think that it is not too much more than a reference guide to the complex Ubercart module. Surprisingly, you're only half right. While the authors, George Papadongonas and Yiannis Doxaras, do a great job of covering almost all aspects of the modules that ship with Ubercart, they also go way beyond that. It turns out this book is actually a pretty good guide for not only configuring your Drupal-powered ecommerce site, but also quite valuable in the planning, promoting, and tracking phases as well.
As you'd expect, the authors do a nice job covering the many modules that need to be enabled and configured for a basic Ubercart site. In many cases they go screen-by-screen in the configuration - something that isn't easy to make very engaging. They cover Ubercart's conditional actions functionality quite nicely and how it can be used to configure tax and shopping modules. They also cover product classes and product kits - two very powerful features of Ubercart that every site admin should leverage.
Where the book really shines though is in the descriptions of all the various topics (mainly other modules) in the Ubercart universe. They wisely provide information about popular supporting modules that many ecommerce sites lack, including wish lists, product recommendations, and coupon codes. It is effective use of modules like these that really make ecommerce sites useful.
Overall, this book is a nice surprise. At well over 350 pages, it is beefier than most Drupal books, and provides a wealth of practical information that most Ubercart-powered sites will benefit from.

It's better than nothing but not by much

In many ways I'm disappointed in this book. The book covers a lot of ground and gives you the sense of thoroughness but I soon realized I was not learning very much and particularly the info I needed to set up and run a store with Ubercart. For example in the chapter on Customers and Orders they mention a lot of screens you might use but they never take you through step by step what it would take to process an order. Same with payments, I read that chapter and came away knowing little more than I started with.
In the chapter on Customizing the Frontend they have a section where they are supposedly going to show you how to create your own theme from the Zen theme. But once they get past telling you the boilerplate stuff you can get from the documentation they give you the following text where the real work should occur: "Write your CSS code. The recommended workfow is to build the basic layout using the layout-fixed.css file, customize the basic HTML elements in html-elements.css, work in MYTHEME.Css, and fnally debug for Internet Explorer in ie.css." Wow, don't you feel empowered after that useful bit of information! And then they move on to a different subject.
On the other hand they do cover a lot of ground and include some information that I wouldn't have known about without reading their book so there is some value to it. Some of their tips and pointers to other useful information, tools, etc. is good.
The authors do not appear to be native English speakers and although their English seems to be fairly good I think this maybe one reason the book is more fluff than substance.
This book is better than nothing but not by a whole lot. I think there is still room in the marketplace for a well written book on Ubercart.

Only official book around about Ubercart but not even average

You can get some good information on where to start but :
1. book has been written in the most boring style.
2. there is no step by step guide to make an e-shop, more like an advertisement for different modules "...OK, NOW DOWNLOAD THIS, INSTALL IT, NOW ACTIVATE IT, IT'S GOOD. NOW TRY TO WORK IT OUT YOURSEL, BYE..." it's the style of this book. I've been on this book for 2 months and still have no finished it yet and guess what? my store still doesn't work well.
3. absolutely nothing said about drupal marketplace and PayPal mass payment.
Overall very bad book, total waste of money, writer basically avused readers with lack of competition
