Kurzbeschreibung

Nia Ammo only wants to win the field hockey state championship. But it's not the other team she has to worry about stopping her - it's the two soldiers in ancient battle armor who attack during the game! Nia has always been a little quicker, a little stronger, a little more agile than everyone else. She quickly learns that hand-to-hand combat is another skill she possesses.

The attack makes headlines and causes her parents to uproot the family business and move cross-country during her senior year. It's not an easy adjustment and before long she finds herself in the middle of another physical altercation, this time with the entire boy's lacrosse team. But a mysterious stranger named John Leon shows up to help and starts Nia's life on an uncontrollable spiral she never imagined...

On the night of her eighteenth birthday, she begins to dream about being another person in another life. The dreams grow increasingly frequent - and increasingly clear - and she begins to question everything about her life, from who she really is, to who she really was, to whether her parents are who they claim to be...

Nia unexpectedly finds herself falling for John but has fierce competition for his affection. Cassie is her neighbor and the daughter of her parents' business partner. She's selfish and ruthless and shallow and John seems like he can't stand her. But he also can't say no to her...

John knows something about Nia's past and the dreams she's been having but getting the information from him might turn deadly...

CHAPTER ONE

I’m the first person to see the attackers though I have plenty of reason to be focused elsewhere. I don’t know how but it’s like I sensed the danger coming and looked up just in time to see a pair of behemoths charging out of the nearby woods. In the split second I first lay eyes on them, my mind registers every minor detail: two men well above six feet tall, biceps rippling like steroid-laced professional wrestlers. One has long greasy blond hair and wields a sword almost as long as his body; the other has brown hair just as long and greasy and wields a massive axe. Their teeth are equally brown and rotted, evil sneers of blood lust plastered across their lips. There’s no doubt in my mind that they’re both ugly but I can’t see their faces behind metal helmets that cover their heads and most of their faces. Only a single slit in the helmets allows them to see, their eyes focused in my direction.

Had I not spotted the attackers right away, I surely would have heard them soon after appearing from the trees. They wear matching suits of armor that cover their chest and legs, clattering and clanging with every step they run. I can’t imagine how a normal human could walk in such bulky suits let alone run but they don’t seem slowed by them at all. For the second time in a matter of seconds, my mind surprises me with something else I can’t quite explain: somehow I know that these soldiers are from the Spanish Armada.

Logically, I think this should be some sort of ill-advised joke. This type of soldier hasn’t been seen in centuries. Others around me must have the same thought because it takes several seconds for the first scream to cry out from the large crowd. I stop staring at the soldiers once I feel a heavy smash against the back of my leg; I’d almost forgotten that I was in the middle of the most important game of my life.

Did I forget to mention that I’m in the middle of a field hockey game?

5.0 von 5 Sternen Critical reader meets new author, excitement ensues. 6. Oktober 2012
Von Amazon Customer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
So on a whim, looking for a cheap read, I picked up this first title. I have never read anything by this author in the past, but the blurb didn't suck and it was cheap. I did not realize until I began it that it was technically a YA novel, which I do not generally enjoy. The writing style and content in YA's is generally not to my liking. I stuck with it though, and am immensely pleased that I did. I ended up purchasing and reading the entire trilogy today, one book after the other.

Cons to this series:
There were some minor editing issues. Missing words here and there, incorrect usage of hear/here, their/there, etc. But not so common that it hindered my understanding of the writing, or so nagging as to pull me off the story line.

This guy is NOT a romance author. If you picked up this book looking for some fantastical love story, this is not it. While the love triangle in the book is impactful, this is not this author's strong suit.

The one re-occurring complaint that I had about this series was this: You have this strong Amazon character, who epitomizes both inner and outer strength. And you make her a blubbering ninny over this guy who repeatedly denounces her in public, while sweet talking her in private, explained away by inner monologues about how she just knows he is telling the truth when he talks to HER, and she just trusts him. Thankfully, the author did NOT focus heavily on the romance factor as the books moved along.

Pros to this series:

There were no vampires, werewolves or faeires. Thanks for that, I'm a bit burned out!

He did a wonderful job of integrating a wild concept into this book. Some may complain that the first book took too long to identify the Amazonian legends that are the basis of this series. I applaud the author. Had I known that that was what this book was going to be about from the get go, I would not have continued. He sucked me in wondering what the heck was going on, so that by the time he did introduce this far out there concept, it was too late for me and I had to buy the next book.

He never got on a pedestal about anything. He introduced all of these well known, crusading characters, and didn't take the opportunity to preach on any of their causes. Being an avid reader, I find more and more authors using their novels to preach at me about things they support: being vegan, recycling, world peace..... none of which belongs in any of the genre's that I read. I'm not after a self-help book, I want to be entertained!

The story line moved quickly. Very few down times, never thought to myself "Self, this book is boring, go do something else". As I have the attention span of a goldfish, that is saying something.

There was no cookie cutter ending to this story. It was all set for the classic happy ever after (which I LOVE, don't judge me!), and he ripped it right out of my hands, but in such a way that I didn't mind so much.

The author built a fast paced, engaging, believable world and characters. The bad guy and motives were believable. The good guys and their motives were believable. AND the good guys were not saints (that happens too often).

SPOILER ALERT
Having John have to die, while it seemed almost hastily manufactured, appealed to the vindictive side of me that could never really believe that Zannia bought all of his crap so many times. Zannia had repeatedly had karma bite her in the hind parts throughout this book, so him getting off scot free might have bothered me had that happened. (Kudos to the author for realistically making all of his betrayals still occasionaly get the best of Zannia).

In hindsight, the guillotine might have been a bit much. If I stop and try to think logically about the logistics of it being built and set up and none of the sane, regular humans knowing about it and protesting (what else do you use a guillotine for except slaughtering people?), then it really bothers me that it was set up in an otherwise completely believable world. Buuuuut...... then I recall that I set out to read a fun, fantasy novel. All in all, the author did a fantastic job of that.

Overall, the series is great. Perfect? No. But pretty great. I'm off to post this to his Facebook page, then to check out his other series.

A creative and refreshing take on a classic tale about the fountain of youth. Intertwined are interesting characters from well known history, and a plot that brings the reader into the story. Well written, full of questions and mystery yet leaves the reader satisfied and wanting more. Thumbs up! Can't wait for book two!

5.0 von 5 Sternen Worth the read 9. August 2011

This book was recommended to me by a friend who makes me read books that expand my mind from the normal genres that I tend to go to. It was well written and kept reading to see what would happen next. I truly was able to picture what was happening through my own imagination. I can not wait for the writter to come out with the next book so I can go further into this amazing story and see what awaits...
Kudos to the author!

3.0 von 5 Sternen Loved the story, hated the dragging 13. März 2013
Von Harley DeLeon - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
First off I loved the story it is unique and well written. On the other hand I personally felt the story was drug on. I am all for suspense in a story but this book had a bad habit of just about to reveal information then oops something unfortunate happens to keep the information from being revealed and this happened so many times with every bit of info you were waiting for even multiple times for the same piece of info that I was extremely frustrated. The book went from finger nail biting anticipation to yeah yeah someone gets shot by an arrow, I get it. The story was so good I did continue reading until the end, though. My curiosity about what was going to happen to win over. I probably won't read the second however only because I can't really enjoy my reading if I'm angry at my kindle deciding whether or not picking it back up is even worth it. I do also suggest the author to make the obvious facts to the reader obvious to the main character, like the fact Cassie re-created the rock formation, that should be obvious to Nia that Cassie is remembering something at least subconciously. Oh and I'm pretty sure I know who Nia really is which will be my reason behind reading the second just to confirm my suspicions, if I am correct Nia's true identity is mentioned earlier on in the book when she corrects her history teacher....

5.0 von 5 Sternen YA Adventure - An Old Story With a New Twist 26. April 2012
Von E. - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Such a pleasant surprise! This was a very fun story with a strong female lead and plenty of characters you enjoy one second and hate the next. It is filled with historical characters and anecdotes all warped into the fiction so they blend seamlessly with the tale.

I loved how the 'myth' included in this story isn't one found all that frequently in the YA genre. Yes it is found in some YA fiction, but it really isn't as common as many others (I can think of one 'everlasting' example immediately but that is a very different kind of story).

The story is told in first person by Nia, a very athletic, take no prisoners kind of girl. When she is forced to fend off armored soldiers in the middle of a high school field hockey game, she begins to suspect that she might not be all that average after all. The soldiers were clearly from another time and their attack did seem directed at her. When strange dreams and broken memories begin to tell Nia she really is something other than an average teenager - the reader gets caught up in an action filled adventure full of mysteries and unexpected discoveries.

The writing is smooth, easy to read and has a good amount of humour. All in all, I found it very enjoyable read. I think it would appeal to YA readers who simply like a good adventure.
