Since I was born during the the Ford Administration, I never was able to experience any of the sentiments/situations described in the Drifters. It is obvious that Michener was motivated to present the social situation that he felt was relevent during that time. In this light, literature that is meant to parallel a certain time/place will contain some generalization or sterotype.
I have no "real-world" attachments to the later-half of the Sixties and early Seventies and so I have no reference point. However, the Drifters is a good read. It does reveal, in a broad sense, the experiences of all young people. What do I believe in? When is "status quo" a contraint? Throughout the book, I DID feel the interweaving of lives (as is a Michener custom) and a sense of "drifting" through all the possible answers to all those questions mentioned.
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Though not quite as good as Tales of the South Pacific, it is one of Michener's best.

basically it's about a bunch of young people drifting through life in the late 60s. it's a book about politics (Vietnam war, assassination of Kennedy, racism, Israel,...), drugs, different people/generations and places (Torremolinos, Marrakech, Mozambique,...). simply great literature!
one quote I like very much:
"My old man shouts: Goddammit, you should listen to my fifty-eight years of experience; but what he had was one year of experience repeated fifty-eight times."

I read this novel for the first time in German about 30 years ago and I remember that I was quite impressed by it then. I have read a number of novels by Michener since then and they were always excellent, so I was curious how this novel had stood the test of time and how I would feel about it now. I am sure I have enjoyed the novel now on a different level and from a different perspective than I did so many moons ago, but I did enjoy it and finished it within a very short time. It is Michener's attempt - and I would say successful - to discuss the generation gap which was especially wide during the 60s and 70s - the sexual revolution, the anti-Vietnam protests, the hippie movement - led to a lack of understanding between the young and the old. Michener brings together a group of six young people from various backgrounds who all end up in Torremolinos and and look together for new ways of living - not all of them are successful, but they are trying. Michener's alter ego in the novel is an elderly gentleman who gets to know them and tells their stories from a sympathetic perspective. Sometimes ideas seem a bit dated (the role of music and its meaning seem a bit blown out of proportion) and these a minor quibbles. On the whole this a very readable and informative novel on a period that seems so far away but led to all the changes from which we benefit today. Very recommendable.

To Each His Own

Looking back from 1999 this book seems unsophisticated.
