Gloriously luminescent, but always self-deprecating. Simon's physical powers are diminishing, but his writing just gets better. The wonderful portraits of the people he encounters, often redolent of Bruce Chatwin, are sometimes so enticing that, were this a movie, you'd swear they were a plant for later on OBSERVER This book has barely left my side in the past few days. It is, by turns, sad, funny and immensely uplifting TELEGRAPH A trip of dreams - and Ted Simon has done it twice ... a terrific read RTE GUIDE He was on the road for three years, and his new book, Dreaming of Jupiter, is a compelling account of the adventures en route, including breaking a leg in the middle of a vast plain in Ethiopia; a reunion with a camel rider he'd met 25 years before in Eg SAGA MAGAZINE

Ted Simon is the author of the classic travel book JUPITER'S TRAVELS. It documents his four-year journey round the world by motorbike, travelling through Europe, Africa, South and North America, and Asia. A number one bestseller in the late 1970s, it is still regarded as one of the greatest motorcycle books - indeed, one of the greatest travel books - ever written. In 2001, at the age of 69, Ted Simon decided to retrace his journey, and DREAMING OF JUPITER is the result. It took him two and a half years - during which time he revisited all the countries he had travelled through in the 1970s. He found much had changed, and he reflects upon the increased poverty, political upheavals, environmental issues and indeed the changes in himself. But ultimately, DREAMING OF JUPITER is a hugely inspiring read with a positive message at its heart - that even at the age of 70 you can still set off on an adventure, and be surprised and excited by what life throws at you along the way.

Jupiter meets Planet Earth 1. August 2011
Von Stefan - Veröffentlicht auf
Format: Taschenbuch
Ted Simon is one of the people I blame for having left my home country (Germany) to look around the world, which then resulted in not going back to Germany but taking a job with an international organization, moving across the world, settling in an African country and call it home after finding my wife and starting a family.
I have to thank him for that....

I always yearned to pick one of my bikes and follow his example, even if only limited to travelling up and down the African continent.
It was fun reading his newest account of his travels in which he confirms my suspicion that the hustle at the borders, fight for visa, trouble with corrupt officials and dangerous traffic somewhat took the fun out of the travelling by road.
Maybe I have to thank him for this easy excuse, too..

I was somewhat surprised reading that Ted was not smarter when dealing with some of the officials in some of the 'unfinished countries' especially when he is chasing a schedule that involves meeting with film crews flying in from abroad. I think he would be smarter than ' off officialdom and then worry about not making the deadlines. Probably a sign that one turns grumpy when turning old.
Probably another excuse I can use...

After all, the new book is an interesting read, not much of an advice for travelers, but a confirmation for those of us who believe that we, the human race, are slowly but surely killing the planet. Since he has a first hand comparison between then and now, it is sad to see my own observations confirmed and not only for Africa.

Good but not a page turner 30. Mai 2008

I enjoyed Jupiter's Travels more than this but it's a good read never-the-less. I was interested in how a 69 year old could handle a trip like this and he gives only a little insight into this. Mostly he dwells on the changes that have taken place in stops he made 20 years ago.

It's ok to be human. 5. September 2008

I read (and re-read) Jupiter's Travels pretty much when it came out in the 1970s. This is a very fine follow-up - and hard to put down - (good enough to loan to my literary friend), that just goes to show that it's ok to be human.
Great Follow-up to Jupiter's Travels 1. Februar 2014

If you like motorcycles and adventure touring - or you're an arm-chair adventurer like myself, you should enjoy this book. A follow-up to Simon's original 'Jupiter's Travels', it follows some of the same routes and uses a similar format as the original book. What's missing is the naivete, and unassuming character that Ted represented in his first book. This time out, we have a more worldly and experienced Ted who is continually comparing this trip with the conditions he experienced on that initial trip. Also, to be honest, this is less about motorcycles than it is about a personal journey with the motorcycle just representing a simple mode of transportation that occasionally represents some logistical problems. More intriguing is the different cultures and people that Ted meets along the way. All-in-all a good read and a worthy successor to the first book.
Ted Simon at his best 7. März 2013

Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
Much better than the the documentary film. In this book Ted Simon is at his most self revealing. A sensitive look at his own reality at 70. He doesn't just live his life, he savors it. I've followed his journeys with great interest and have enjoyed the maturation of his writing and his own coming to grips with his age as he lays out yet another even more adventurous journey. It is not only the journal of his 2d RTW journey, it is a journal of his own continuous self-discovery at 70 that makes this book so enjoyable. As a biker, I appreciate the details of the adventure he shares. As a man of 65, I feel he faces the struggle of balancing his zest for life with the inevitability of aging, head-on. Ted is self effacing, quite humourous, and brutally honest.... I raise a glass to him.
