YA-This large, coffee-table type book with black-and-white photographs looks at the wide diversity of people who sport this knotted, ropelike hairdo. Some display it theatrically, while others wear it to stress their individuality. Others have religious or political reasons. The author also looks at dreadlocks in history, including the priests of the Ethiopian Coptic Church who have been locking their hair since the fifth century and the Rastafarian movement, which began religiously in Ethiopia. There is an introduction by Alice Walker as well as a 20-page treatise on "Sacred Rites of the Natural Hair Revolution." The 100 plates of men, women, and children in various cultures and at varying levels of modernity show this amazing hairstyle doing its thing in variety and abundance. The hair itself arouses interest and speculation as to the time involved in achieving it, the intricacies of the hygiene, and simply the wonder of it all.

Dreadlocks are a modern phenomenon with roots reaching as far back as the fifth century. According to ancient Hindu beliefs, dreads signified a singleminded pursuit of the spiritual. Devotion to God displaced vanity, and hair was left to its own devices.

This book is a great example of the diversity of dreadlocks. Although many African-Americans believe locks are indiginous to black people, history proves this false. I recently discovered that my ancestors, the Mayans, wore their hair in locks.In fact, when the migrant workers came to Jamaica from India they wore they're hair locked and they also brought seeds to plant they're sacred herb. They called this herb what Shiva did thousands of years before, Ganja. The name most Rasta's call it.You can find it mentioned in the Bhagavad-Gita, written many years before the old testament.

I have had dreadlocks for 3 years and I love them. In the beginning I was always asked how I could do this to my hair. It was hard, in the beginning, to make people understand why I had chosen to do this. Now it is very simple. The people in this book used the same language that I now do. They spoke from their soul. The pictures were awesome. The explanation of the history and spirituality of dreadlocks was powerful. I am even thinking about giving this book as gifts to those who still question me about my hair.

DREADS, translates the self-affirmation and spirituality of people who embrace the coil. The awesome photograhs and personal statements reveled the beauty and mystic of dreadlocks. Locked hair is much more than a 90's fashion trend. Loved this book. It's a KEEPER!
