The allure of James Bond was best described by Raymond Chandler, who insisted that 007 is "what every man would like to be and what every woman would like to have between her sheets." Who can argue with that? This month marks the 40th anniversary of the film release of Dr. No, which was the first Bond adventure to make the big screen, and two big coffee-table books are being published to honor the occasion (LJ 10/1/02, p. 96). Shockingly, Fleming's original novels have gone out of print, but Penguin here reproduces a trio of the British secret agent's early outings, released in 1952, 1958, and 1959, respectively, sporting stylish cover art. These stories were racy for the nifty Fifties but are quite tame by today's standards. Still, they can be fun.

After Bond's failed mission in the last Bond novel "From Russia With Love" the 00-Agent is sent to Jamaica, where he has to find out what has happened with MI6-Agent Strangways an his partner Trueblood. Weaponed with two new guns, Bond flys down to the Caribbean island and meets his old friend Quarrel ("Live And Let Die", also Strangways appeared in that novel).
Together they find out that the Chineseman Doctor Julius No, who's the owner of the little guano island Crab Key, could be behind all this. Bond and Quarrel sail to the island and meet Honey Raider, the beautiful girl who's looking for shells. Soon the three persons are fighting for their lives in a deadly game of the pain-loving maniac's choosing - Dr No's choosing.

THIS IS A FUN AUDIO TAPE OF FLEMINGS "DR. NO". YES, QUITE SIMPLE, BUT WELL READ AND SUBTLE. THOSE THAT BELLITTLE THIS PRODUCTION ARE SIMPLY NOT TRUE DIE HARD BOND FANS, NOR ARE THEY ABLE TO APPRECIATE FLEMING AND HIS LOVE OF THE CARIBBEAN. WELL WORHTH OWNING - ESPECIALLY AT THE PRICE. SO THERE NJ.

For those of us that are 007 fans, this is an interesting mustown tape. Not quite the same as the movie version, but more complex -explores a much more sinister side of the Dr. No character than the movie conveys. Well worth the listen.
