Dr. Eldon Mate, a.k.a. He's also turned up in the back of his van, attached to his own death-dealing "Humanitron" machine and too far away from most of his blood and a certain external organ.
Enter Milo Sturgis, L.A.'s only openly gay homicide detective, and for the 14th time in 15 years (1985's Edgar-winning When the Bough Breaks through 1999's Monster), enter also his good friend, child psychologist and LAPD consultant Dr. Alex Delaware. Unbeknownst to Sturgis, however, is a potentially case-stymieing doctor-patient conflict of interest. One of Delaware's young patients' mother was either the beneficiary or victim of Dr. Death's services, depending upon your point of view. The father, Richard Doss, is firmly in the latter camp, giving Delaware ample pause:
After hearing the details of the murder, I felt better. The butchery didn't seem like Richard's style. Though how sure of that could I be? Richard hadn't disclosed any more about himself than he'd wanted to. In control, always in control. One of those people who crowds every room he enters. Maybe that had been part of what led his wife to seek out Eldon Mate.Maybe. But the fact is that there's no shortage of motivated suspects from both within and without the late doctor's circle of influence. And as usual, Jonathan Kellerman (himself a child psychologist and recognized authority in childhood psycho-pathology) guides Delaware's engaging first-person narrative with expertise, keeps Detective Sturgis real, and rudders his taut story to its satisfying end with sharp, true-to-the-ear dialogue. The question of how close assisted suicide is to murder--and how close a death-dealing doctor is to a serial killer--forms the moral backbone of this intriguing thriller, the fourteenth in the Delaware series. After assisting in more than 50 suicides, Dr. Eldon Mate, loosely based upon Dr. Jack Kevorkian, is found murdered in his suicide van, hoisted on his own Humanitron killing machine. LAPD homicide detective Milo Sturgis once again seeks psychologist and friend Delaware's knowledge of behavioral psychology. Delaware's insights into the criminal mind (he posits the killer is after reflected glory here) are both compelling and convincing. (Kellerman himself is a noted psychologist.) The mystery is enhanced by the range of suspects, including the families of the suicides, Dr. Mate's son, and one of Delaware's clients, and by Delaware's own "nasty overlap" of ethical conflicts. Alex Delaware is back- this time in a moral twilight zone. Is Dr. Eldon Mate an angel of mercy or just a serial killer posing as a euthanasia supporter? One day is mutilated corpse is found in the back of a van and Alex Delaware finds himself more involved in the crime than usual. The plot is breathless and keeps you guessing right to the end who killed mate. Morally Kellermann takes up the thread from Survival of the Fittest tracing the idea of life not worth living and fascists behind picket fences. The author certainly raises a valid point and makes a very strong case against euthanasia. As always this Delaware novel is not just a ripping yarn but also an intersting book about psychology. Absolutely worth reading!

Now, this is again a very fine >whodunnit<-thriller by Jonathan Kellerman, featuring the sensitive and caring child-psychologist Alex Delaware and his sidekick, Detectiv Milo Sturgis. If you are fed-up with Kellerman's quite confused and not-so supensful explorations of the thriller-genre like "The Web" or "Devil's Waltz", this will be the book for you. Because in "Doctor Death" Kellerman is back with a plot that will keep you guessing (nearly) until the end. A (in)famous euthanasist-doctor is found dead in the hills over Los Angeles, and soon a variety of suspects enter the scene. Everyone had a good cause and the possibility to kill the doctor. But who did it? Besides the quite thrilling story the book has yet another thing to offer. It deals with the question wether it is moraly acceptabel to end someone's life or not, even if that life is a miserabel one and the suffering person has asked for death. So: four stars (and that is only because someone familiar with crime-fiction may guess the evil deed-doer in the middle of the book)
