Daß das Buch ein solches Ziel verfolgt, zeigt sich schon am Aufbau des aus drei Teilen bestehenden Werkes. So enthält z.B. nahezu jedes Kapitel eine Kombination aus Literaturempfehlungen, Fragen zur Wiederholung von bereits behandeltem Lernstoff, Übungen zur Konfiguration und Fehlersuche, Fallstudien und Zusammenfassungen. Darüber hinaus enthält das Buch zahlreiche Anhänge mit Antworten auf Fragen, Übungslösungen und einen gesonderten Anhang mit Tips zur Prüfungsvorbereitung. Zu Beginn liefert Jeff Doyle einen Überblick über mehrere grundlegende Themen, einschließlich einem Kapitel zu den Parametern von TCP/IP selbst. Though initially overwhelming, such thoroughness is what's demanded of those who ultimately pass the Cisco Certified Internetwork Expert (CCIE) exam, the bruising test for which Routing TCP/IP, Volume 1 serves as preparatory material.

Such a goal is evidenced in much of the three-part book's design. For example, nearly every chapter includes some combination of recommended readings, review questions, configuration and troubleshooting exercises, case studies and summaries. In addition, there are numerous appendices devoted to answers to questions and exercise solutions as well as one that outlines exam preparation tips.

Jeff Doyle begins this volume with a review of several basic topics, including a chapter that outlines the parameters of TCP/IP itself. Though some may already be familiar with that material, the sections on dynamic and static routing serve as valuable review material for readers of all levels. The second part deals with TCP/IP interior routing protocols, such as Routing Information Protocol (RIP), Interior Gateway Routing Protocol (IGRP) and Open Shortest Path First (OSPF). The book ends on a challenging note with explanations of route redistribution, route filtering and the like. I work for Cisco and am currently preparing for the CCIE. This book is extremely clear, and contains tons of very detailed information on all of the popular IGPs (and even the not-so-popular ones like ISIS). The summary of IOS commands covered in each chapter at the end of the chapter makes review a breeze, and the chapters on route maps, redistribution and filtering made these complex topics easy to grasp. At around 1000 pages, carrying it around will also serve to impress your co-workers. :)

Good Questions for Understanding the Theory; RFC list Plus 11. Oktober 1999

After reading all the reviews below and the first Five Chapt. of this book (with completing all the Questions/Config./Troubleshooting after each chapt.) I think this book acturally explaned the concepts in TCP/IP RFC documents in a great detail - if you read those RFC doc. recommended by the author. One thing for sure is that the author really created/pvovided the great Questions/Config. exe./Troubleshooting w/ answers for reader to deeplly understand the theory. So far none of this kind book available in this area! Without questioning yourself after reading, it is hard to know how well you master the concept and you might think you "Understand" what you read.

My suggestion to those who really want to master TCP/IP, not just for pass the CCIE exams (written or Lab.): read the RFC documents and the books listed by author first, and then go on this book chapt. by chapt. w/o missing any exe. provided by the author.

I really appreciated the reviews I read so far. and hope there will be more helpful reviews w/ details about why reviewers think the book they read is worthy to buy/read or not. Specific info. will be welcome than too general one.
