Kurzbeschreibung

A humorous account of what really happens behind the scenes of both Michelin-starred restaurants and lesser establishments - and the extraordinary, larger-than-life characters who inhabit them.

The book begins with Lennie Nash's decision to give up his job as a journalist, aged 40, and a fateful meeting with Rick Stein, when the cheffing door is opened. There follow stints in the kitchens at Padstow, a failed audition for Masterchef, work as a commis chef under a crazed ex-football hooligan, 16-hour shifts as a kitchen slave in a gastropub, and the rigours of the Fat Duck. Unable to keep up with the younger chefs around him, he gives up the dream and returns to office life, only to find the itch starting again.

The book is aimed at the umpteen armchair chefs and foodies who would love to learn the trade first-hand from the professionals, braving the stress, 16-hour days, and low pay of kitchen life, but are far too sensible to do so...

Reviews:

"Reading 'Down and Out in Padstow and London' is a serious test for any food writer. Not only has Alex Watts done what all of us say we would like to do, tested his mettle in a professional kitchen, he also writes about his experiences so well that you spend as much time being jealous of his writing skills as you do of his experiences. It's an annoyingly enjoyable read."
- Simon Majumdar, author of two food/travel memoirs, Eat My Globe and Eating For Britain.

"The whole book is a real eye-opener into the differences between the TV image and the reality of the kitchen, particularly where celebrity chefs are concerned. It's sharp, easy to read and almost impossible to put down..."

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great read 31. Dezember 2011

I had been following "Lennie Nash's" chef sandwich blog for years so downloaded the book. There's much more here than on the blog.

This book depicts one struggling chef's view of the workings of professional kitchens.

For readers from the industry, most of the characters are instantly recognisable as are all of his rollercoaster ride of kicks, knocks and highs.

For those thinking of taking up cheffing, this is a must read, it may even save you a few rough services.

For folk with an interest in food, restaurants and professional kitchens its a great insight into what goes on, how it all works and what you're actually paying for.

The chapters about his unpaid weeks at Heston Blumenthal's Fat Duck are particularly raw, well written, fair and insightful.

It's a bargain and an easy read, I didn't want to put it down.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great Read for Those Interested in the Chef World 9. November 2012

A really entertaining read -- you get to see the what actually happens inside some professional UK kitchens (including the Fat Duck's and Rick Stein's) from the point of view of someone who loves food and cooking, but has very little actual experience with serious 'cheffing' at the beginning of the journey. It is written and a raw, very human voice with a great, natural sense of humor. I finished it in just a few days as I wanted to know how it would all end. I hear he's working on a sequel now ...

I am a chef, and love all things cheffy! A very entertaining read about the author following his dream of becoming a chef. If you are dreaming of becoming a chef, you should read this!

I an not quite sure why this book was written. neither the anecdotes, the story nor the foods & recipes were very notable, very colorful, or even very memorable. I found it to be a great big snore.

There are so many five star ratings for this book. There must be more o it than I've been able to see or feel.

I just don't understand why I don't like this book. I'm a chef. I love food, restaurants, stories/(auto)biographies of chefs & their restaurants, particularly the "becoming a chef" stories/books.

In my entire life there have been about four books I didn't finish, and this is one of them. Don't know what I'm missing (I did hang in about 2/3 of the way through) but I just couldn't care about the people at all. And it seemed 'scattered' to me, in spite of the chronology. Maybe it was a vulgar language...pretty gritty in places.

Boy! Is it ever difficult to write a negative review.
