Kurzbeschreibung

"Not only America's premier writer of speculative fiction, but the greatest writer of such fiction in the world. He remains today as a sort of trademark for all that is finest in American imaginative fiction."
--Stephen King

Electronics engineer Dan Davis has finally made the invention of a lifetime: a household robot with extraordinary abilities, destined to dramatically change the landscape of everyday routine. Then, with wild success just within reach, Dan's greedy partner and greedier fiancée trick him into taking the long sleep--suspended animation for thirty years. They never imagine that the future time in which Dan will awaken has mastered time travel, giving him a way to get back to them--and at them . . .

Once again, the author of Stranger in a Strange Land and Starship Troopers displays his genius. The Door in to Summer proves why Robert Heinlein's books have sold more than 50 million copies, winning countless awards, and earning him the title of Grand Master of Science Fiction.

"Heinlein . . . has the ability to see technologies just around the bend. That, combined with his outstanding skill as a writer and engineer-inventor, produces books that are often years ahead of their time."
--Philadelphia Inquirer

"One of the grandmasters of science fiction."
--The Wall Street Journal

Synopsis

Very comforting! 25. Mai 2001

It's fourty years ago I read this book and was fascinated. At that time I didn't realize who the author was - I was consuming books by the hundreds. But the story and especially the cat were somehow glued in some curve of my brain since - oh destiny! - the school library of my children made place for new books and threw the old stuff out, where by chance I found an old but well kept copy of „A door into summer", surely in german „Tür in die Zukunft" (what a stupid title!). I own more than 10.000 books (which I read all!), but Heinleins story of Pete the cat is one of my favourite ones. Meanwhile I own it in the original language and read it again and again. It's like crawling back into the uterus! The best remedy after hectic days.

This is really a wonderful novel. Not only that it is original with reference to the plot and the twists and turns that it takes. What I loved most was the character of Pete the Cat, so wisely assuming that one of the doors in one` s way must eventually lead into summer. I read the book some years ago, but every now and then I take it and go through it again. I have not yet really found my key to Heinlein` s later writings, but "Door into Summer" alone makes RAH one of the authors I really like to read.

The door into summer is just great story-telling. Another must in that category is RAH's "The Moon is a Harsh Mistress".

Never mind that a lot of the predictions are off (like cold sleep, autonomous household machines - but they are working on both, I'm told), a lot of the predictions are also quite on the mark (like CAD systems, consumer markets, industrial overproduction/ overcapacity). The point is that it's a story well told.

Besides, when it comes to predicting the future, scifi authors are just as reliable as econimsts, historians, or the Club of Rome. But much more entertaining ...

I've read it in German, time and again (also a great time travel story *grin*), and I'm just considerung getting the English version, to complement my personal library.

A bore
I am more than astonished! I bought this book due to the positive judgements of the other critics. For me, the book was simply a bore. My advice: save your money!

This book is just so well done!
This is a great story on the excitement and possible paradoxes of time travel. I remember the first time I read it, and how I was surprised by the twists and turns that the story... Lesen Sie weiter...

A look back on a look into the future
Having read this in the year 2000 it was very interesting to see what Heinlein expected life to be like in this year. In fact his version of the 70's was interesting as well. Lesen Sie weiter...

Classic storytelling! To be read and re-read...
Over the last 35 years I must have read this book at least 20 times... enough to wear out 3 copies. There is a reason for that... there is no comparison to a good story well told. Lesen Sie weiter...

Open This Door and See For Yourself

Don't you just love that cat's name?
Heinlein well deserves his place as one of the true sci-fi masters. Somehow he manages to pack technical detail in (describing it so that it seems obvious) creating characters you... Lesen Sie weiter...
