Doctored Evidence is every bit as impressive as any previous outing for the urbane Commissario Brunetti we've encountered--and reading a Donna Leon novel is almost as good as a trip to Italy, so evocative is the ex-pat of her adoptive country. Not that Signor Berlusconi would necessarily approve of the multiple levels of Italian corruption and double-dealing that Leon has strip-mined for her unflappable copper to take on--and her view of the other dark sides of Italy strays quite some way from the tourist's point of view.
Here, Brunetti seems to have come up against an open-and-shut case; a well-heeled Venetian is found bloodily murdered in her flat, with her missing maid, a Romanian immigrant, the prime suspect. The maid is tracked down, but meets a violent end on a railway track attempting to escape. Needless to say, Brunetti doesn't takes things at face value and when it transpires that the money found on the maid has not been stolen, this (along with other factors) has Brunetti doing a little unofficial sleuthing, and uncovering a very tangled web of motives indeed--with revelations quite different from the attempts to cover up municipal shenanigans that have often been the worm in the bud of previous Brunetti cases.
By now, we're all very comfortable with the Commissario and his dogged head-butting at complacent institutions. But Leon is not one to rest on her laurels--there are new elements here (notably in the brilliantly orchestrated final chapters) that take us into new territory. But all the things we love about this series are firmly in place: vivid, acutely detailed locales, the usual exemplary characterisation (not just of Brunetti--the whole dramatis personae here is spot-on); and of course that impeccable plotting. --Barry Forshaw -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Zugegeben, ich kaufe die Romane von Donna Leon schon mit geradezu zwanghafter Regelmäßigkeit. Damit nimmt man natürlich auch in Kauf, dass die Erwartungen einmal nicht voll erfüllt werden. Aber so sehr wie dieses Mal bin ich von Donna Leon noch nie enttäuscht worden. Sicherlich, das Buch beschreibt wieder einmal, wie Brunetti einen Krimialfall, den seine Kollegen bereits abschließen wollten, an sich nimmt und mit Ruhe und Umsichtigkeit auf seine Art löst. Auch einige der Personen, die wir schon aus früheren Büchern kennen, tauchen wieder auf. Z. B. sein Dauerstreit mit einem seiner untergebenen Kollegen spielt eine Rolle.Und die in Venedig stets gegenwärtige Korruption ist auch wieder Thema.Aber insgesamt fehlt dem ganzen Roman der Biss, es plätschert so vor sich hin, auch in der Familie herrscht Friede, Freude, Harmonie. Ein Buch, das einen nicht aufregt, für trübe Tage.

This is the 7th Brunetti novel I read. The first was good, the second repetitive and the third was just the same all over again.
I kept buying them because I love Venice and have close ties to Italy so I can relate to much of her criticism of Italian red tape etc.
But the stories really are all the same, the characters do not evolve a bit, we have the same situations over and over again in each book- Brunetti vs. Patta/Scarpa, Brunetti pondering greek heroes while his wife listens to classical music and talks more English than Italian (this in some places reflects too much the interests of Ms. Leon and thus makes her detective less credible), Brunetti and wife witting with their children over dinner....
If you have read 2 of her books you can skip the rest and this one in particular.

Early in Doctored Evidence, Commissario Guido Brunetti asks his wife, Paola, about a book she is reading . . . a text on religion that has been assigned to their daughter, Chiara. They muse about the seven deadly sins and speculate about whether or not anyone takes those sins seriously any more. During his case, Brunetti assumes that only certain sins can be motive enough for murder. Is he right?
As the story opens, Signora Battestini has been bludgeoned to death by someone strong. She's an old lady who never leaves her apartment, but nothing has been taken. A missing housekeeper seems worth tracking down by Lieutenant Scarpa, one of Vice-Questore Patta's enforcers. In the process of arresting her, a terrible accident takes place. Scarpa and Patta are satisfied that the housekeeper is the killer, and the case goes dormant. Brunetti is away on vacation at the time.
All might have stayed that way, but a neighbor comes to report that the housekeeper is probably innocent. Scarpa tries to get rid of the neighbor, but Brunetti ends up involved. From there, the real investigation begins.
One of the most interesting parts of this story is when Dona Leon fills in some background by Signorina Elletra Zorzi and her seemingly magical ability to access records that shouldn't be available to her. You'll be astonished by the contrast between her personal scruples and her unscrupulous methods for gaining police information.
Brunetti also gets caught with his hand in the cookie jar after doing some illegal searching. How will he handle the potential for exposure and discipline?
The mystery in this book is pretty good. It will be some time before you'll be able to figure out who the murderer is and the motive. The ultimate explanation was credible and added to the pedestrian tone of dealing with the minor and major annoyances of life:
How should you persuade the neighbors to make less noise at night?
How can an exploited housekeeper with questionable papers protect herself from exploitation?
How should a threat to respectability be met?
How can endless official delays be overcome?
Take a ride on the #1 Vaporetto if it's not crowded and enjoy the sights and sounds of Venice (I wouldn't dare suggest you try to enjoy the odors of Venice).
