Kurzbeschreibung

27. Januar 2011
Identical twins vie for a family empire built on deceit, cruelty, and dark secrets--and one woman stands between them while another waits in the shadows. DISINTEGRATION When a mysterious fire destroys his home and shatters his family, Jacob Wells is pulled into a downward spiral that draws him ever closer to the past he thought was dead and buried. Now his twin brother Joshua is back in town, seeking to settle old scores and claim his half of the Wells birthright. Jacob’s wife Renee is struggling with her own past and her attempts to salvage Jacob are driven by guilt and ambition. As Jacob and Joshua return to the twisted roles they adopted at the hands of cruel, demanding parents, they wage a war of pride, wealth, and passion. They share a poisonous obsession with the provocative, manipulative Carlita, whose immigrant family helped build the Wells fortune. Joshua wants other things, too, but Jacob’s desires are divided between the forbidden love he can’t possess, the respectability he can never have, and the revenge he is dying to taste. And Renee has dark motives of her own. If only Jacob can figure out which of them to blame. But the lines of identity are blurred, because Joshua and Jacob share much more than blood. And the childhood games have become deadly serious. "A psychological thriller that grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go, not even at its shocking conclusion."--Vicki Tyley, Thin Blood and Sleight Malice

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fascinating and disturbing 27. Oktober 2010

Another reviewer called this book "an emotional rollercoaster" and it sure was for me, too. I was sad, angry, I laughed insanely, and I hated this book at times. I wanted to throw it at the wall (except it's in my Kindle and, of course, I didn't want to ruin my eReader), but I couldn't stop. I'm not a thriller lover and now I know why. I want my characters to be flawed, troubled, even tortured but I want them to be basically good people, and the characters in this novel are anything but decent.
So why am I giving this novel 5 stars? Because, it is so well written. There is never a dull moment; each scene moves the story forward, giving just enough hints to build tension. I stayed up half the night, reading, wanting to know what's going to happen next. There are so many surprises, yet there is enough foreshadowing to lead the reader along the way to its shocking end. Lovers of thrillers will have a heyday with this. Highly recommended.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Powerful, dark and brilliant 28. Oktober 2010

Jacob Wells wakes to the smell of smoke. Flames engulf the hallway to his 9-year-old daughter's bedroom. Frantic he tries to save her, in the process sustaining a dislocated hip and second-degree burns to over twenty percent of his body...

A psychological thriller that grabs you by the throat and doesn't let go, not even at its shocking conclusion. It literally tore at my insides. Intense and emotional, this is Scott Nicholson at his finest.

Powerful, dark and brilliant.

1.0 von 5 Sternen First review, and it's a doozy 19. Dezember 2010

I've never actually written a review for Amazon before. I'm a lover of books, and since receiving my Kindle as a gift last Christmas, have amassed quite a large collection of old and new favorites. I browse Kindle lists for free and cheap books, so I know there's a certain amount of "don't complain, it's free" talk. However, I am vaguely insulted that I spent ANY amount of money on this book.

I am no prude, and I don't mind my characters dark and twisted. This story, however, was so poorly written from the beginning that I found myself skipping over great chunks of inane prose just to get to the next plot point. The description of Christine's funeral actually made me giggle in a time where the author was clearly attempting, however poorly, to elicit sympathy.

I'm the type of reader who laughs aloud, cries desperately, and wholly identifies and sympathizes with characters. In short, I totally get into books. But not this book. I rolled my eyes through the entire thing, put the book down several times in disgust, and complained bitterly to my bewildered husband. I have a curious nature, though, so I had to finish. I read the last quarter in about 10 minutes, skipping whole paragraphs in my vain desire to see if ANYTHING about these characters was redeeming.

Short review: this book was an affront to my love of books and sense of dignity. I'm all for corrupt, detestable characters if there are other essentially good, if flawed, characters to balance out the evil. These characters were so contemptible that I found myself actually hoping they'd all just kill each other and end the book a good 100 pages sooner. This book was depressing, boring, and ludicrous all at the same time. I wish I could get those hours back.
