Kurzbeschreibung

In Detail

VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager automates disaster recovery in a manner that no other solution does. It is programmed to leverage array-based replication and VMware's proprietary vSphere Replication engine.

This book will familiarize you with the concepts of disaster recovery using vCenter Site Recovery Manager and vSphere Replication.

You will learn how to deploy and confi gure vSphere Replication in the standalone mode to replicate virtual machines. You will also learn how to use vCenter Site Recovery Manager to leverage array-based replication or vSphere Replication, form Recovery Plans and orchestrate them to perform a test, Planned Migration, Failover, or Failback.

Approach

This is a step-by-step guide that will help you understand disaster recovery using VMware vSphere Replication 5.5 and VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager (SRM) 5.5. The topics and configuration procedures are accompanied with relevant screenshots, flow-charts, and logical diagrams that makes grasping the concepts easier.

Who this book is for

This book is a guide for anyone who is keen on using vSphere Replication or vCenter Site Recovery Manager as a disaster recovery solution. This is an excellent handbook for solution architects, administrators, on-field engineers, and support professionals. Although the book assumes that the reader has some basic knowledge of data center virtualization using VMware vSphere, it can still be a very good reference for anyone who is new to virtualization.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Get going with SRM the easy way 4. Juni 2014

Format:Taschenbuch
Full Disclosure: I have been a technical reviewer for this book.

I really like the style this book is written, it covers a lot of ground without feeling heavy. The screenshots and guides are written in an easy to understand way and guide you along well.
The scope of the book reaches from the installation to the configuration an testing. If you starting with SRM or just want to give the product a good test, this is the book your looking for.

I personally conduct a lot consulting around SRM and DR issues and this book is a very good starter.
5.0 von 5 Sternen The book is well written and easy to digest 23. Juli 2014

Disaster Recovery using VMware vSphere Replication and vCenter Site Recovery Manager by Abhilash GB, is exactly what it says on the front cover. The book is well written and easy to digest, and guides you along the way of implementing a fully functional DR solution. The book assumes that you have existing knowledge of Datacenter virtualization using VMware vSphere, but prior knowledge to Site Recovery Manager or vSphere Replication is not required. The entire book is is based on the current version (5.5) of the various components

Chapters 1-3 walks you through the process of installing and configuring the Site Recovery Manager, accompanied with relevant screenshots, flow-charts, and logical diagrams that makes it easy to follow along. It then moves on to setting up protection groups and recovery plans, array based replication and performing failover and failback. Not only does it cover the installation steps, but it also gets into discussion points with regards to design considerations. Chapters 4-5 covers installing, and configuring vSphere Replication before tying it into SRM.

The book provides the reader with clear and concise implementation information, without being too detailed. All in all this is a great starting point for anyone considering utilizing Site Recovery Manager and vSphere Replication, and will help the reader getting their environment protected in no time. While the book is on the short side, with only about 140 pages, it still manages to provide all the necessary details by being clear, concise and to the point. It makes a great starting point for anyone looking to set up SRM and vSphere Replication in their environment, in fact, even if you’re not actively looking to implement SRM I would still highly recommend reading through this book to get a general overview of how it works.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Great book, very practical, has a lot of step-by-step instructions with screenshots. 13. Juli 2014

Great book, very practical, has a lot of step-by-step instructions with screenshots.
The material is well structured, logical and easy to follow.

The first half of the book is about SRM, its integration options, design considerations, deployment and configuration.
The second half is devoted to deployment and configuration of vSphere Replication and its integration with SRM.

The author explained in details the following solutions for DR which can be implemented depending on budget, environment size and automation requirements:
vSphere Replication alone, SRM with array-based replication, SRM with vSphere Replication.

My impression is that most of the material is specific with less unnecessary details or explanations which may sometimes slow down the reading.

The book was very helpful with my current DR project. It is a must to take a look at if you have any projects related to DR or HA for VMWare environments.
5.0 von 5 Sternen Good read with excellent technical details. 18. Juli 2014

Both solutions are used to protect an entire site from disaster where array based replication needs to have array replication capability with proper license. That’s why a couple VR + SRM might be better choice for SMBs which can architect DR solution which costs less, because hypervisor based replication can use any kind of storage (even DAS).

The book has 5 chapters in total and as I said in the beginning, it’s very very detailed so if you haven’t worked with SRM or VR, you can use it as a detailed guide to design and implement DR in your organization. http://www.vladan.fr/book-review-disaster-recovery-using-vmware-replication-vcenter-srm/

It's a good read...
5.0 von 5 Sternen Great way to get started with VMware SRM and vSphere Replication 25. Juni 2014
Von Jonathan Frappier - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
The book is very straight forward and is very easily consume. The book covers installation and configuration of VMware Site Recovery Manager and vSphere Replication. While the book is mostly a step by step guide, the author does include design and installation considerations where appropriate as well as a review of background tasks happening which might not otherwise be controlled by the administrator; for example the cleanup tasks after testing a recovery.

Even though the book is on the shorter side, it is a worthy read for anyone interested in implementing either VMware SRM, vSphere Replication or both.
