Über den Autor und weitere Mitwirkende

Nati Vale is a native of Puerto Rico with a Bahian swing in her step. She currently lives in Berkeley, California, where she attempts to finish her dissertation one paragraph at a time.

Alice Rose is a Brazil enthusiast who, while she is not working on her Bahian accent, is digging for dinosaur bones in her backyard in Oakland, California.

Pedro A. Cabral discovered Brazil in 1500. He spent most of his life in Salvador, Brazil. Due to GPS technology and Google Maps, Cabral has been forced to give up his love for exploration and has retired to the tame Oakland, California, where he has dedicated himself to the art of capoeira.

HASH(0x974af8e8) von 5 Sternen funny....and useful 15. November 2010
Von l0velyR - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
It definitely has a lot of dirty Portuguese, and most of it is really funny. But I ended up liking the book more for other sections (there are a lot!): Howdy Portuguese has greetings, Party Portuguese has holidays, beaches, shopping, Carnival---and my favorite, Hungry Portuguese has a ton of stuff about food & food culture. There was even a section on Computer Portuguese (huahuahua!) I like the compact format too-it's fun to just open it up to a random section.

Overall, a surprisingly useful book.

HASH(0x974b1ea0) von 5 Sternen Adds fun to your language learning 12. Dezember 2012
Von Lori - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch Verifizierter Kauf
This book is as fun as you might expect, it teaches you words for everything from random idioms to how to talk about fake breasts, and has a whole section on sh*t and piss. But as in any country, slang is very regional and generational, so I wouldn't go around trusting that anything I take from this book should be understood by all Brazilians, especially if you don't totally understand the context. Some of the stuff in here simply isn't very cool to say and sounds more ridiculous than anything. Even so, even my Brazilian friends who tell me that are endlessly amused by this book.

The book also doesn't tell you just how masculine, feminine, or dirty certain phrases are considered to be, and doesn't provide multiple scenarios for frequently used slang, so if you want to get it right you should probably listen for it when native speakers are using the phrases, or ask someone who is a native speaker to make sure you understand correctly.

In the end, no book can teach a foreigner the nuances of how to joke in a foreign language, etc. But around casual friends and friendly co-workers, you'll surely get a laugh just form attempting to use these phrases ... everyone loves a foreigner with a wannabe potty-mouth.

HASH(0x974af930) von 5 Sternen Great resource 12. Februar 2011
Von J. Stringer - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
I love this book! I've been to Brazil once, I've been a student of Portuguese for years, and I'm currently taking an intermediate Portuguese class. While the classroom setting teaches formal Portuguese, it's very interesting and satisfying to equip oneself with language that is used in more casual encounters. I recommend this book to anyone who is learning Portuguese! Such an informative source. The only gripe I have about it, and the singular reason it doesn't merit 5 stars in my opinion, is there isn't an index of phrases. There is a just a very general table of contents, so if you are searching for a specific phrase or its equivalent, it might take you a few minutes to track it down. Still, that's a minor flaw in an otherwise excellent book.

HASH(0x974b7708) von 5 Sternen Great Conversation Starter! 27. Oktober 2010
Von Beija Florzinha - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format: Taschenbuch
This book is an excellent conversation tool in almost ANY context! While it is a definite must have for a trip to Brazil, it is also handy to disrupt awkward silences abroad...'hey guess how to say MILF in Portuguese?' It's incredibly easy to use and, as other reviewers have mentioned, conveniently compact. But don't let the size fool you, as promised, it's loaded with Brazilian sayings, slang, and cuss words. I showed the book to a Brazilian friend who lives in the U.S. and he couldn't get enough of it! It does get quite racy and everyone seems to go directly to the sex chapter, which has caused me to blush on more than one occasion, but this is part of its charm as no corners are cut in getting down and DIRTY! Well worth the $8 investment!
