Kurzbeschreibung

5. August 2011
Unlock your digital artistic talent with Corel Painter X, the industry standard for pixel-based drawing and painting. "Digital Painting Fundamentals with Corel Painter X" provides step-by-step instructions for using the basic features of Painter X along with a Wacom graphics tablet. Created for artists by artists, Painter X realistically emulates the look of traditional painting and drawing in any style you choose. You'll start with simple sketching exercises immediately, to acquire and sharpen essential skills such as eye-hand coordination and drawing what you see. As you develop familiarity with Painter's wide array of brushes and art materials, you'll be introduced to traditional art concepts such as composition, line quality, contrast, and focal points. Projects ranging from still life and landscape studies to portraits and abstract painting will help you practice and master each new skill, and the book is full of images that illustrate every technique as you progress through it. Whether you are a new artist or an experienced artist who wants to apply your skills to the digital medium, this book will help you get the hang of Painter X's tools and features, as well as hone and perfect your painting and drawing fundamentals, skills that can be applied to any artistic medium.

November 2011
Von Zetau - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
I'm disappointed. I wanted to like this book. I expected to like it. I expected to learn the fundamentals of the new Painter 12. It just wasn't meant to be. What I realized is that Rhoda Grossman Draws is a talented illustrator, and this book may be just what you need if you want to create drawings similar to Rhoda's.

"Digital Painting Fundamentals with Painter 12" should have really been titled: "Digital Caricatures and Still Life with Painter 12 and the Wacom Tablet."

You can use Painter without a tablet (though I would not recommend it), but the author assumes you have a Wacom tablet. She covers the Wacom tablet almost as much as she covers Painter.

After reading the introduction, I downloaded the necessary files (+300MB) -- a procedure that was not at all straight-forward. The book provides a URL for the downloads, which redirects to another URL, which provides a search screen to look for the compressed zip files.

From the very first page in lesson one, it refers to an online file by name, but not which zip file to find it in. There are parts that a novice may think they're just not getting it, but some of "it" is confusing in the way it's written, or it's short on information. For example ...

Page 22, "Size Matters": all you really need to do here is zoom out, not reduce the size of the file.

Page 23 "Clone-and-Trace" The author states that the program "... deletes the image ..." -- False. Don't worry, Painter will not delete any of your images, whew! "Cloning" is actually very different than "Tracing" so don't be surprised if that topic is confusing as written.

Page 206, quote: "... a Painter or Photoshop file that's 8" x 10" at 300 ppi weighs in at 20MB." -- False. She's comparing pixel density to file size, and they just do not relate. That file's pixel density (7,200,000 total pixels) could result in a file size from 1MB to 1000MB ... or more. It all depends on how complex the file is (e.g., layers, channels, masks, paths, etc.).

I stopped at the beginning of lesson two. If you want to use Painter to draw caricatures and still life, this book may be for you -- but be aware that the writing may be confusing or misleading at times.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Art for the creative soul 18. August 2011
Von P. B. Sharp - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
Although I have used Paint Shop Pro for years, I was daunted by Painter 12. The CD comes with a 112 page help guide, but it wasn't enough to cheer me on the way to learning cool art techniques. "Digital Painting Fundamentals" will hold your hand and with baby steps you progress from one technique to the next. Unless you are well grounded in digital art techniques you can't simply plunge into the deep end and swim. Other artists, especially those well-versed with Photoshop, may find this how-to book elementary, but for me it was just what the doctor ordered. You learn how to use the individual brushes, pens and paints in hands - on exercises, in hands - on experiences. You set the pace. Painter is very complicated and even with the book right in front of my nose, I creep along and often it takes me a while to locate the menu item author Draws is talking about.

"Digital Painting Fundamentals" is not for the dilettante but for the artist who is willing to put in a lot of time to learn this craft. Right away I was flummoxed by the Wacom Pen since I had never heard of such an item. With a Wacom pen and an accompanying tablet the artist is able to draw directly onto the tablet and the strokes will imitate many different brushes and pens, all of which you control. I feel that to work well using this book I will have to get the pen several of which are offered on Amazon.

Author-artist Draws will propel you along in a breezy non-bookish way, and I'm confident I'll become a Wacom expert somewhere down the road as well as a digital art creator. But bear in mind that the purchase of a Wacom pen which you use instead of trying to draw with your mouse is a necessity for performing most of the exercises in the book.

If you're a neophyte to digital art this book is really a Bible for mastering Painter 12. "Fundamentals" is printed on thick shiny paper, the illustrations are beautiful and clear. The tone of the book is breezy and enthusiastic and the enthusiasm is catching. You'll want to get going!

P.S. Rhoda (Grossman) Draws is a character as well as being a very accomplished digital artist. If you run "Rhoda Draws" through Google, you'll find many pictures of her and some interesting biographical notes.

P.P.S Corel has wonderful support by phone or email. I had mistakenly anchored my tool menu on the wrong side of the canvas (duh) and they cheerfully told me how to move it.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Digital Art School In A Book 16. September 2011
Von Thomas - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
This book is less about learning to use Corel Painter 12's software and more about learning how to draw and paint with digital media. I have Ms. Grossman Draws previous edition about working with Painter X and I must say this is a step up for me. That book had us drawing and painting women's shoes (which I have, confessedly) absolutely no interest in. There is more diversity in the subjects that one uses in the lessons; the only thing I didn't particularly care for is having to go to the web and download the files for the exercises instead of having them available on a CD as in previous editions. If you are a veteran artist who wants to learn all the ins and outs of the Painter 12 software and all it's myriad tools, then this book is not for you. I might as well add at this point, if you are a photographer who wants to learn the ins and outs of photo painting--then I don't believe that this book will meet your needs either--the subject is touched upon, but it is definitely not a photo painting book. If you want to learn to draw and paint with digital media and learn the basic rules of drawing and painting I reccomend it highly. A lot of things are stuff I did in high school art class, but to be honest never did them well, so I can definitely benefit from reviewing the basics. My best advice, if you are uncertain, is to download the sample chapter and browse the "Look Inside This Book" option and you'll get a better idea whether it is suited to what you want to learn. I believe most of the negative reviews to be read on Amazon.com regarding this book are the result of people not being aware of what they were getting. If you really want to learn all about the software you'd be best off reading the User's Guide that comes with Painter 12 or watching some of the many video tutorials available on the subject.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Disappointed 1. Januar 2013
Von Tandoori - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I have worked with Corel Painter Essentials previously and I was looking forward switching to Corel Painter 12. I was also very excited that this book was available through Safari Books with my subscription. I am so glad I didn't actually spend money buying it, because there are much better resources out there. While I appreciate that this is a VERY beginner book and it is not the worst out there, there are much better choices and at a better price available. I have issues with the way the book is organized, presented and supported. Just as a quick illustration:

- Some of the information in the book is outdated ( When exactly did it manage to become outdated is beyond me).
- Some of the links provided in the book were either broken or outdated. I was not able to use the CD that supposedly comes with the books because I read the book through Safari as I mentioned, but the author provides a link to the website that "supports" the book. Realizing that the link is actually not accurate and I have to find it on my own was not such a big deal, compared to the disappointment in the poor organization and development of that website itself. Even a simple variation of the search terms ( for example the use of "Digital Painting Fundamentals WITH Corel Painter 12" instead of "Digital Painting Fundamentals Corel Painter 12" would not produce any results; or the use of the author's three names instead of only first and last). While this is not strictly the author's fault it made the use of the book more cumbersome and I definitely don't appreciate my time being wasted with having to use specific search terms to find the outdated information provided in the book in the first place. The whole thing reeked of bad programming.

- The book is beyond poorly organized. The author do not list easy to follow menu paths, instead the reader is forced to go and look for them on their own, trying to figure out where they might be ( example of skipping a step that provides information in which menu you are supposed to find a submenu option, or referring to a specific type of brush that is not clear in which brush section is listed etc).

- The files for the exercises are beyond belief- for example you have to download a brush pallet that you have to use for one of the exercises. One of these files is completely missing, another one is incomplete and does not include the brushes referred in the exercise and you have to go and look for them on your own. Another "nice feature" is having to download a large zip file to simply access one of the files included, without being able to preview the files online so you can decide if you want to use them at all ( like the THINGS section for example).
These are just some examples of the the issues I encountered while using the book, unfortunately there were more.

Don't get me wrong. The book is workable and I was able to navigate through it because of the expertise I have with a similar program already. I am listing all this because of all the poor souls who would have absolutely no experience and would count on getting it through this book. I am confident that I personally would have managed to "feel my way" through the software with even better success than when I was following the " instructions" in the book.

I am not aware of this author's previous work, however the whole book had the feeling of something old hacked to look like something new. The lady might be very talented as a digital painter, however, I cannot say the same of her teaching and writing skills. The whole thing feels like the difference between a beautifully written programming code and something "borrowed" from somewhere butchered to look like a presentable code.
Thumbs down for me.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Resource Files Now Available 2. August 2011
Von Roberta V. Russo - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
When I first posted this review the resource files for the lessons were not available on the publisher's website. When I called their customer service department to inquire about the files they couldn't tell me when they would be available. They sent me an email today (8/2/2011) to let me know that they were now available for download. I was able to log on to their website and get the files. One tip - If you search for the files by author name you need to search by "Rhoda Grossman" (nothing comes up under "Rhoda Draws" or "Rhoda Grossman Draws" which is how the author's name is listed in the book and on Amazon). I thought it was very good customer service for them to actually send me an email to let me know that the files were available.

This is only a preliminary review. So far, I have worked through the first 2 exercises and have skimmed the rest. The first lesson walks you through the basics like workspace, tool and color selection, creating custom palettes and how to set up your pen tablet's sensitivity. The second chapter goes over Painter 12's quick clone feature. Each chapter includes practice exercises where you actually get to practice using the features described. For example, in Chapter 2 you learn to sketch an apple with a variety of different media by using the quick clone feature and one of the sample files downloaded from the publishers website.

The book doesn't give a comprehensive explanation of each and every one of the software's tools and features. You can get that from the User's Manual and Corel's Website. Rather, the book teaches how to draw and paint using those tools and features. It is as much a how-to art book as it is a software manual. In my opinion, this is a perfect combination and is just what I was looking for - particularly the practice exercises. I am really enjoying this book and would rate it A+.
