15. Juli 2011 A Daisy Dalrymple Mystery (Buch 12)
In April 1924, the Honourable Daisy Dalrymple Fletcher must face her darkest fears and confront the one person she's tried to avoid-the dentist. But upon arriving for her appointment, she discovers the dentist stone-cold dead. The circumstances of his death are suspicious but everyone seems anxious to write it off as accidental. Once again it falls to the redoubtable Daisy to uncover the truth behind this case of murder most foul. Critical Praise for "The Daisy Dalrymple" novels by Carola Dunn: "Replete with well-drawn characters, snappy dialogue and interesting plot twists...Easily the best entry in a charming series." ("Booklist" on "Mistletoe and Murder"). "The period sense remains vivid, the characterizations are excellent, and the mysteries are, if anything, more perplexing than ever." ("The Oregonian" on "Rattle His Bones"). "Daisy and her husband spring into action, surrounded by historical armaments, secret rooms, hidden treasure, and family secrets. For fans of British cozies and Dorothy Sayer's novels, this is a very inviting situation." ("Library Journal" on "Mistletoe and Murder"). "Styx and Stones is a swift, deeply enjoyable read. While Dunn's influences are many, she ultimately makes this territory her own." ("The Register-Guard"). "Reading like an Agatha Christie thriller, "Rattle His Bones" is a charming look at life after the first World War." ("Romantic Times"). "Dunn captures the melting pot of Prohibition-era New York with humorous characterizations and a vivid sense of place, and with careful plotting lays out an enjoyable tale of adventure." ("Publisher's Weekly" on "The Case of the Murdered Muckraker").

Carola Dunn's (Daisy Dalrymple) books make a good relaxing read with enough murder mystery to keep the pages turning and a period charm that evokes the 1920's.

A Wonderful book, will read others of hers. A light read. I couldn't put it down once I'd started reading.

I wouldn't say it was a bad read, nor would I say it was a particularly good one either. It was like an Agatha Christie wannabe trying to emulate one of the greatest mystery writers, and this effort disappointed me in content and execution.

Finding your dentist dead when you arrive for your appointment has actually been done before, and then the introduction of so many characters into the plot was overwhelming (so as to make out the world and his wife wanted him dead). I got quite confused about who was who and how this one was connected to that one. I'm not even sure the Daisy character was believable either given the era setting, and I wonder how many wives of police inspectors, as she was, irrespective of title (The Honourable) would be allowed access to confidential information about an ongoing crime even if they were the one's who found the victim. It all seemed a little far-fetched to me.

It might be just me, but I became impatient to reach the conclusion as the story did seem to go 'around the houses' a bit, and so much detail left me bewildered. But then there was another death about three-quarters of the way in and clues as to the perpetrator were quickly and neatly forthcoming. On the other hand, trying to be fair, I stuck with it even though in my humble opinion it was over-long. I had to find out who the culprit was as all avid mystery readers are prone to do, but in all honesty that's the only reason I was determined to finish it. Don't take my word for it because by all accounts many other reviewers absolutely loved it.

Daisy Dalrymple finally plucks up courage to go to the dentist only to find the dentist dead in his own chair having apparently been poisoned by Nitrous Oxide gas. Suicide? Accident? Or Murder? Daisy thinks it is murder - the local police are not convinced and favour suicide or accident until Daisy points out one or two discrepancies to them. Scotland Yard is called in, in the person of Daisy's husband Alec Fletcher and Daisy starts asking questions amongst her friends and acquaintances.

This is an entertaining and at times amusing mystery story which shows how much goes on under the surface in any society. It also shows how trivial things can catch people out even if they think they have hidden what they are doing. I thought the way people's propensity to gossip was very well done especially the difference between the malicious gossips and those who do it because they're interested in people.

I like the way the author is developing the relationship between Daisy and her husband and her mother-in-law. Her step-daughter, Belinda does not feature as much in this story as in some but as ever what the reader sees of her is interesting and amusing. The plot is quite complex and I completely failed to spot the murderer in spite of the relatively small number of suspects. I recommend this series to anyone who likes their crime novels with interesting and well drawn characters and entertaining plots.
