Christina Pribicevic-Zoric. LC 88-45262. $19.95. f Yugoslav writer Pavic assures us that the Khazars were a nomadic people who settled near the Black Sea in the 7th century A.D. "But their origins remain unknown and all traces of them have vanished." A thousand years later a Polish printer incorporated surviving knowledge of the Khazars into a dictionaryalmost all copies of which were burned by the Inquisition. Pavic's interlocking series of witty and fantastic tales purports to update that edition, but by now all "facts" about the forgotten nation are doubly conjectural. As if the truth weren't problematic enough already, Pavic has even produced his lexicon in "male" and "female" versions differing by only a few (highly significant!) words. This congeries will delight readers of Borges and Calvino, although libraries will need to buy both editions to satisfy them.Grove Koger, Boise P.L., Id.

Einfach klasse!! Wieder mal ein Buch dem man alles glauben möchte
und doch ist es gewissermaßen so phantastisch... aber sind es unsere 3 "heiligen Bücher" nicht auch?
Eine komplexe Mischung von Märchen, Sagenwelt, Religion und last but not least Politik: -der Streit, welcher Glauben der rechte sei. In der Chasarischen Polemik wird deutlich, daß es keine der 3 Glaubensrichtungen sein kann, oder vielmehr alle drei zusammen... Ein Werk, wie es aktueller in diese Zeit nicht hineinpassen könnte...

I was drawn in my all the amazing reviews of this book. For the most part, Pavic lived up to the reviews -- this is a clever meta-critical look at philosophy, religion and novel writing by an astute author. You may not understand every word, but I think any good reader will pick up the majority of this book -- a challenging yet worthwhile book. I have to admit that I only read the female version and I'm a little skeptical about what difference the male version may hold, but I'd still recommend the book to all readers who enjoy texts from other cultures.

Dictionary of the Khazars is the best book I ever read. Milorad Pavic, famous and the most popular Serbian writer, is fascinating me. Khazars are people similar to Serbs, and I think that was his main motive to write this book. Their characteristics are just like ours, their made the same mistakes as Serbs made, and everybody knows what happened to them...they dissapeared. I hope it won't happen to us. Milorad Pavic is writing in very specific style, he is writing hyperfiction. He admires Internet and computers at all and all his novels are "strange". Dictionary, crosswords, handbook for augury, "box for writing"... You should visit his homepage.
