Diamonds Are Forever, Ian Fleming's fourth Bond novel, has all the hallmarks of a classic 007 adventure and whilst it lacks some of the strength and depth of other books in the series it nevertheless has much to recommend it. The plot concerns a ruthless syndicate known as the Spangled Mob who are running a diamond smuggling pipeline out of Africa into the USA. This is costing England millions of pounds and James Bond is sent to investigate. A promising set up, but it soon becomes apparent that the syndicate's only aim is to get rich and as Bond novels go it is slightly disappointing that this is the sum total of the villains' project.
On a more positive note, Tiffany Case is an excellent Bond girl who plays an integral part in the book. The relationship that develops between her and Bond is highly convincing and well-observed and the book is rich in dialogue between the two. On the topic of marriage:
Bond: "Most marriages don't add two people together. They subtract one from the other."Tiffany: "But it depends what you want it to add up to. Something human or something inhuman. You can't be complete by yourself."
As suggested by the syndicate's comparatively (in Bond terms) modest ambitions, Diamonds Are Forever lacks a really good principle villain, but it does have well-portrayed minor contenders in the form of the duo Wint and Kidd, two violent and ruthless killers. There are some tense moments in the novel and although there is no real action until well over half way through it, once it starts, it is almost non-stop until the end.
One of the outstanding features of this adventure remains the way Fleming wrote the character of Tiffany. Her relationship with Bond adds humanity and life to Diamonds Are Forever. --Jamie Campbell -- Dieser Text bezieht sich auf eine vergriffene oder nicht verfügbare Ausgabe dieses Titels.

Wie auch fast alle anderen James-Bond-Romane kann man dieses Buch nicht mit dem Film vergleichen.
Es geht hier um Pferderennen und Diamantenschmuggel.
Bond arbeitet viel mit Felix Leiter zusammen.
Ian Fleming hat hier eines seiner dicksten Bücher abgeliefert. Er hält sich sehr lange mit Beschreibungen von Nebensächlichkeiten auf, zitiert fiktive Zeitungsberichte und lässt 007 mehr passiv ermitteln.
Bond gibt ein paar Dinge über seine Einstellungen zum Leben preis.
Das Buch ist umfangreicher als die deutsche Übersetzung und schon deshalb ein Muss für jeden Bond-Fan.

"Diamonds are Forever" does what it sets ought to do: keeps you turning pages, let's you pretend to be the unflappable enigmatic spy. I don't see that James Bond does what he sets out to do in it, though. He never learns more than what the British Secret Service knew already. So he knocks off a few mobsters? They're easily replaced by their underlings, and, besides, mobsters themselves are always knocking off of few mobsters. (As Woody Allen says about intellectuals, they only kill their own.) I liked best the ocean liner cruise--as I liked best in "From Russia with Love" the train ride--, but it seems to me it would have made a lot more sense to fly. I suppose if you want logical, carefully constructed plots you shouldn't bother with James Bond, but this one strikes me as particularly hole-ridden. Oh, well.
Recommended: John Le Carre's "The Spy Who Came in from the Cold" and his "The Russia House".

this is the first Bond novel i ever read but i found it to very good. The highlights consist of Bond's incognito and infiltration of a diamond smuggling ring. Though it lacked a little action the book was not bad.
