Kurzbeschreibung

Geologist Trace Brandon has traded mining in Washington State for the sunshine and warm waters of the Cayman Islands. For the past year, his only encounters with crooks have been social, and no one has tried to kill him. But a phone call from Cyrus “the Virus” McSweeny lures Trace into a dangerous new mining project. This time the query is West African alluvial diamonds: rare and extremely valuable…green diamonds.

In the steamy backwater city of Monrovia, Trace and his partner, Will Coffee, team up with expat mining engineer Gordon Watson and an Idaho potato-farmer-turned-diamond-miner known as the “Mormon.” Together, they will make an extraordinary find—what miners call a “First Water Stone.”

When rebels attempt a coup, Trace and his partners are caught up in violence and treachery that threaten to engulf them all…

5.0 von 5 Sternen A very credibly written, involved thriller 23. November 2013
Von John H. Manhold - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition
Diamond Fields, ISBN: 9781480082267, Paperback, 319 pages by Randall Reneau is a thriller where the action takes place largely in Monrovia (a town established incidentally by slaves emancipated by the American Civil War) and territory surrounding this capital city of the West Africa country of Liberia.
Trace Brandon is a geologist whose successful endeavors have led to a very profitable partnership that includes Cyrus McSweeny, a prominent and wealthy businessman. He is vacationing in McSweeney's Cayman Island home with the love of his life when he gets a call from Cyrus to come back and decide what to do about mining for rare `green diamonds' in Liberia. He returns, they decide to invest a quarter million each and Trace, along with the third associate, Will Coffee, a lawyer, leave to put the plan in motion. They meet with Napoleon Johnson, the Minister of Mines, who introduces them to President Flomo Abdullai who, according to the Minister is an uneducated but cunning man who "keeps his friends close but enemies closer" and is a sadistic killer. Flomo, for a sizeable percentage, allows them to begin their mining operation. The operation begins and the story progresses in an increasingly involved manner. A number of new and interesting characters are introduced, a `coup' is initiated, the President requires funds for arms and threatens, then confiscates the diamonds they have harvested. They have hidden more and better stones, however, and decide they must find a way out. Other acts of duplicity become rampant, even more dangerous situations evolve for the miners and there even is a bit of love interest inserted to add to the tension. Most interestingly, the story and all of the involved action is very credible.
In summary, the author has provided a very credible, involved thriller that is a real `page-turner'. Reviewed by John H. Manhold, award winning fiction/non-fiction author.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Another breathless adventure with Trace Brandon 3. Dezember 2014
Von Grady Harp - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
There are few authors who are able to translate their work experience and educational background into novels that can hold the public's interest. Either they stumble on the clods of attempting to write a compelling story or alienate the reader with facts about a subject that is so foreign that is begs indulgence just to get through it. Such is most assuredly not the case for Randall Reneau. This man can compose a novel so filled with information that has been on the periphery of our knowledge that he manages to make his special mixture work in the most unique and rewarding way.

Reneau, as his biographical data informs us, `has been a professional geologist since 1974. He holds a BA in Geology from Central Washington University. He spent nearly twenty years in uranium exploration, followed by three years in Liberia, West Africa exploring for diamonds and gold. After the outbreak of civil war in Liberia, Mr. Reneau managed a gold exploration project in Mali, West Africa. He later managed silver and copper exploration projects in Mexico. In 2004, he co-founded Uranium Energy Corporation. In 2006, he co-founded Strategic American Oil (now Duma Energy) Corporation. Mr. Reneau served in the U.S. Army in Vietnam and Cambodia and was awarded a Bronze Star and two Army Commendation Medals. He lives with his wife, Lynne, in Austin, Texas.' Now with mining experiences in Liberia, Mali, Mexico and the US and wartime experiences in Vietnam and Cambodia it is no wonder that he is able to weave such a mesmerizing tale about greed, the mining industry, attempts at extortion and make it so personal that we become completely involved.

Reneau has created a character in Trace Brandon as raw and heroic as the types from Ian Fleming's James Bond to James Patterson's Alex Cross or Tom Clancy's Jack Ryan. The difference is that Trace Brandon is a geologist who travels the world in experiences that combine mining and public companies. This is the third Trace Brandon book this reviewer has read, and appreciation what Reneau has accomplished just grows with each new book - he has created a character so credible by now e seems a colleague or old friend. The synopsis of the plot is well distilled by the author: Geologist Trace Brandon has traded mining in Washington State for the sunshine and warm waters of the Cayman Islands. For the past year, his only encounters with crooks have been social, and no one has tried to kill him. But a phone call from Cyrus "the Virus" McSweeny lures Trace into a dangerous new mining project. This time the query is West African alluvial diamonds: rare and extremely valuable...green diamonds. In the steamy backwater city of Monrovia, Trace and his partner, Will Coffee, team up with expat mining engineer Gordon Watson and an Idaho potato-farmer-turned-diamond-miner known as the "Mormon." Together, they will make an extraordinary find--what miners call a "First Water Stone." When rebels attempt a coup, Trace and his partners are caught up in violence and treachery that threaten to engulf them all.'

Any reader who can resist this quality of writing, especially as rich in learning intricacies about the mining industry, simply isn't ready for intrigue on this level. Reneau is well on his way to the top. Grady Harp, December 14
5.0 von 5 Sternen A master work of high stakes and high adventure 17. Juni 2013
Von Darden North - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Trace Brandon, a master geologist, is the most self-confident protagonist I've ever met. "Diamond Fields" by Randall Reneau is the author's second in what I suspect will be a continuing high-stakes, high-adventure series. A well-written novel is full of conflict, and Reneau has mastered the art of mixing both emotional and physical turmoil in polishing (no pun) a fast read. The emotional turmoil first hits, and hits hard, for Trace when he is called out of retirement and away from his girlfriend in Grand Cayman. A previous investor (with the unforgettable name--Cyrus, the Virus), wants even more money from a new mining adventure, this time in Liberia. Trace teams up with his attorney friend Will Coffee (another great character name considering the West African setting of the novel) to form Dingane Exploration, LLC. They are greeted in Liberia with threats of a greedy, homicidal dictator (who can be bought with the gift of a gold Rolex), sweltering humidity, and liver flukes. Soon Trace and Will hire Gordon Watson as mining engineer. The likable triumvirate seeks riches while finding plenty of time for food, alcohol, and sex. (Well, Gordon seems to be left out of that third staple). The plot not only twists and turns but does a couple of flips when one of Liberian President Abdullai's military officers cannot seem to decide where his loyalties lie. I admire Reneau for his vivid character descriptions but I take issue with his portrayal of the US Liberian ambassador, Oliver Ogletree who hails from a prominent Southern family. I never could trust Olgetree, particularly when he says "ya'll" and not "y'all." (I did appreciate the author's description of something being "dug in as deep as a Mississippi tick." That reminded me of an unfortunate afternoon of gardening in my backyard.) From the moment Trace Brandon agrees to leave the voluptuous Dominic in the Caymans and sets his sights on an ambitious adventure in West Africa, the reader is thrown into a romp that surpasses Indian Jones. The writing is detailed not only in its characterization but also in the vivid military battles and murder scenes and in the harvesting of that three-hundred carat green diamond. The intrigue and conflict are not over until the end of the last sentence of "Diamond Fields." I look forward to the next Trace Brandon novel and another 5 star read.

5.0 von 5 Sternen How diamonds make people go beyond any borders, including their own 9. Juli 2013

Randall Reneau shows the side of mining behind the Boardroom: how diamonds make people go beyond any borders, including their own

As a writer on gold, other metals and international mining companies, I know how difficult it is to turn natural resources into glittering gold, shiny silver, natural copper, etc.. So when I connected with Randall (now Randy for me) Reneau on Linkedin, I was intrigued by his turn from a geologist and mining man into a writer of thrillers. Usually we only hear about the successful sides of mining and most people think is a rather dull business. Not exactly so...... Randy takes us into the Boardroom and the fields where the challenging efforts to find and win the metals and minerals take place under often the most bare circumstances. But in Diamond Fields he also gives us an insight in both the best and the very worst that the search and finds of diamonds bring to human characters such as ambition, leadership, creativity, common sense, flexibility, politics, greed, blood, killing, money, power......but also caring and loving. He does it in a pleasant, direct and compelling style of writing that makes the fictive characters like real human beings. It makes you want to read the book from beginning to end in one stretch. Getting curious on every page to what happens on the next one, that is what only a good writer can do. Randy Reneau is a writer that knows how to accomplish that. I can hardly wait to start my next journey in his other book Deadly Lode! Deadly Lode
Thank you Randy, Amazon and Kindle and give us more!
