Kurzbeschreibung

31. Juli 2012
What happens when an unprecedented infection sweeps the world, leaving the earth on the brink of the Apocalypse?

But this infection goes far beyond disease. Beyond even the nightmare images of walking dead or flesh-eating ghouls. The infected are turning into creatures unlike anything ever dreamed of . . . more complex, more mysterious, and more deadly.

Trapped in the northwestern United States as winter begins to fall, Terry and Kendra have only one choice: they and their friends must cross a thousand miles of no-man’s-land in a rickety school bus, battling ravenous hordes, human raiders, and their own fears.

In the midst of apocalypse, they find something no one could have anticipated . . . love.

4.0 von 5 Sternen From Ordinary Day to Zombie Horror Fest! 1. August 2012
Von Melissa's Eclectic Bookshelf - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
This was my first "Zombie" read and I am so happy to report that I really enjoyed it. Barnes and Due draw us in from page one as we experience an ordinary day that could be today turn into a horror story. Some unknown infection is spreading across the country turning loved ones, friends and neighbors into zombie-like versions of themselves who spread this infection by biting their victims.

The characters, a group of juvenile "delinquents," and a lone teen, come together to try to make sense of the new world that surrounds them and to find a way to band together and survive. I loved the interpersonal relationships among the teens, the way they each picked up tasks that benefited the group, and most importantly the way they trust and support each other through the ensuing chaos.

Initially, I was a bit disappointed by the lack of descriptiveness but by a third of the way through the book I was hooked on the story and had come to appreciate the authors' writing style..It fits the tale. There are probably more questions left in my mind than answers upon finished Devil's Wake but that is not a complaint. I can't wait to pick up the second in this exciting new YA series so that I can find out what exactly is going on, whether those infected can be saved and if romance will bloom between Terry and Kendra.

My only issue with this novel would be it's marketing. Apparently the blurb is for the series as a whole and not this book as an individual as there were no references to aliens or a struggle for the planet in this book. In book one we don't know the cause of these transformations and it is assumed that it is some interaction between mushrooms and a flu vaccine. I can only assume that such revelations are to come in Book 2 and I must admit that I'm a bit upset that the books own blurb would have such spoilers for the whole series.

NOTE: I recieved a complimentary copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Loved the fresh concept...Kept me awake 29. August 2012
Von The Book Blogger - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Devil's Wake kept me awake at night and for good reason: Flesh eating zombies whose eyes crust red and who have one objective- to bite.

While on her way to the hospital to receive a flu shot, Kendra is suddenly frightened because the place becomes over run by zombie-like people- thus preventing her from receiving this mysterious shot. This infection is more than just an infection- these people are hungry and they transform really fast. Eventually Kendra finds a group of teens and young adults like herself who are just trying to stay alive on a blue bus called Blue Beauty. In the midst of all thats happening, revelations, friendships, and even love sparks.

I was greatly surprised by this book. It was certainly hard to stop reading. Due and her husband took everything we know about zombies from B-movies and the military and cooked it well together in this fine fiction.

The only problem I had with the book(which almost earned it four stars instead of five) is the speculation as to why the people turned in the first place. It could be a couple of reasons as the characters themeselves speculated early on but I hoped for a more different reason and who knows? The next book in this series could be deeper, and flesh out the explanation as to why people are eating people. Loved the concept though.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Fantastic! 31. Juli 2012
Von Book Fanatic - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Tananarive Due and Steven Barnes - what a FABULOUS combination! And, of course, 'tis the season (decade, century, etc) for post apocalyptic zombie stories, especially ones like this that you won't want to put down, even if you could! If you want to read a thrilling story from a dynamic duo, do NOT hesitate to buy this book! As for Tananarive and Steven, keep those proverbial pens flowing!
