PRAISE FOR DESTINED:“The greatest part: the WINGS series reaches the perfect ending. The worst part: it has to end!” (Claudia Gray, New York Times bestselling author of the Evernight series)
“Pike’s clever and innovative way of reinventing fairy tales and myths to make them her own is wonderful. The story is rich in vivid details, action, adventure, and romance.” (Romantic Times (Top Pick, 4 1/2 stars))
“In this last installment of the Wings series, destinies and betrayals are unearthed at breathtaking speed. The series is action-packed, and the final chapters of the story are no exception. A thrilling page-turner, many readers will read the book cover-to-cover, barely daring to breath.” (Voice of Youth Advocates (VOYA) (Starred Review))
“The action begins fast and furious and never really stops.” (Booklist)
Tamani looked at her gravely, and reached up to tuck her hair behind her ear.
He hesitated for an instant, then his hands found the sides of her face, pulling her to him. He didn't kiss her, just held her face close to his, their foreheads resting together, their noses almost touching.
She hated how much it felt like good-bye.
Laurel now knows the truth: Yuki is a rare Winter faerie, the most powerful—and deadly—of all, and Klea plans to use her to help conquer and destroy Avalon. But Klea's reach extends far beyond one wild Winter faerie. With Tamani, David, and Chelsea by her side, Laurel prepares to face what may be Avalon's final days, in the stunning conclusion to the Wings series.

Also auch hier keine Spannung.

One last chance to stand together to protect all of Avalon from the wrath of an enemy who knows no mercy. An enemy who will stop at nothing to win. And who will destroy everything and everyone who gets in their way.
As Laurel, Tamani, David and Chelsea prepare for the fight of their lives, they will discover an unlikely hero in their midst. Someone brave enough to take up arms and lead the charge. Someone who is willing to pay whatever price is required in order to defend Avalon against the onslaught of enemy forces. Someone who may not come through the battle unscathed.
Ill-prepared, up against the greatest threat Avalon ever faced and with the odds stacked against them, everyone will have to fight. Everyone will be in danger. And not everyone will survive.
Destined is the thrilling, action-packed, nail-biting and bittersweet conclusion to Aprilynne Pike's Wings series. This gripping and tension-filled story will keep readers on edge as they follow Laurel on one final adventure through Avalon that will put her and her friends in more danger than they've ever been in before.
With a whirlwind pace, deadly threats at every turn, an intense battle whose outcome will determine Avalon's fate and a choice that will break someone's heart, this story will captivate, tease, torment, surprise and delight. And with each twist, the suspense will continue to build, all leading up to the stunning and dramatic series conclusion.
Not missing a beat, Destined picks up where Illusions left off and drops readers right into the heart of the action. As the enemy draws near, amassing forces that are hellbent on destroying Avalon, time is winding down for Laurel and Tamani to find a way to protect their home.
And when David and Chelsea insist on following their friends into Avalon and into battle, it is even more important than ever for Tamani and Laurel to keep the enemy at bay as it won't just be Avalon and their own lives that hang in the balance, but their friends' lives that will be at stake.
Aprilynne Pike has wrapped up this series in a way that is as exciting as it is heart-rending. Questions will be answered. Sides will be chosen. Lives will be lost. Hearts will be broken. And no one will walk away untouched.
The tension is palpable. The dangers are electrifying. And the quick pace and enchanting storyline are absolutely riveting. Making Destined an absolute must for readers who love stories of faeries, magical worlds, dangerous foes and deadly battles.
And for fans of the series, Destined will make them fall in love with the characters all over again and give them one last chance to say goodbye.
Characters & Plot: Oh, the plot twists! Aprilynne Pike definitely knows how to create fabulous plot twists that you don't see coming until they are in your face and jumping off of the page. This book was fast paced in the beginning, slowed down through the middle a bit, and picked up speed again towards the grand finale.
All of the loose ends were tied up nicely in this book, which I believe is why the middle section of this book felt a little lengthy and descriptive. I had to go back through and reread certain parts so I could completely follow what was being told. Geez, this is a HARD review to write because if I say anything, I practically give the whole book away! I may just have to come back and edit my review closer to the release date so I can give away something!
I know the burning question everyone wants to know: Who did Laurel choose to be with? I can't tell you! My lips are sealing, but it is so hard keeping it a secret. I won't even tell my best friend who is also a huge fan of this series, but I gladly passed along my copy to her so she could read it and find out for herself. I will say that there are some absolutely swoon-worthy, romantic and heart-wrenching scenes in Destined that did not disappoint me at all. Other characters move on with their lives too by the ending which felt bittersweet.
Final Thoughts: This series is so hard for me to say goodbye too. I've grown so attached to each and every single character over each of the four books, but I think the author did a fantastic job ending the series on a good note. To be honest, the whole love triangle and romantic plot was going on for far too long and I think that it would have gotten redundant if Destined wasn't the final book. I'm happy with Laurel's choice, but I'm not sure everyone is going to be. I hope everyone appreciates her choice though, and I am glad she went with who I thought she would. I am more than thrilled to see what the author comes up with next now that this series is finished. She is a great author and I expect we will see much more from her soon!
The ending of Illusions left us with quite a cliffhanger. We pick up with Laruel, Tamani, Chelsea and David right where we left them, guarding Yuki. We discovered that Yuki is a winter faerie working with Klea. Their end goal is the destruction of Avalon. Since the pair is looking to take over Avalon a battle that lasts for almost the entirety of the book ensues, making it nearly impossible to walk away from this story. So many lives are lost, many of them being characters we have come to love. It was tough to watch Laruel lose people she cares about, but unfortunately when there is a war lives are lost. Aprilynne does do a nice job of setting the scene for the battles and they were exciting to read. They take place all over Avalon and I was thrilled to see more of this mystical world, even if it was under such tragic circumstances. Avalon fascinates me and I always enjoy the story taking us there to explore it.
The love triangle is still going strong in Destined, but it becomes very clear as the book progresses that Laurel has made her decision. I cannot say whether I was happy or not about it, because I have been very vocal about being team Tamani, so any opinion I give on that will be a giveaway. I can tell you that while Laruel is struggling with her decision, it does take more of a back seat in this book due to the constant battle. I thought it was going to bother me, but I enjoyed all the action and events that were constantly moving the plot forward. It also made the private moments that Laruel got with the guys more precious.
In Illusions, Aprilynne gave us the opportunity to see inside Tamani's head and was happy to see that occur again in Destined. He tries very hard to keep his emotions in check and because of this we do not always know what he is thinking. Thankfully, he gets quite a few chapters all to himself in this book and I relished being in his head again. Especially since there are quite a few events in Destined that rocked him to his core. He has quite a bit to deal with and if we did not get his point of view it would take away some of the substance of the story. His actions and thoughts add so much to the plot, keeping it intriguing and connecting us to him emotionally.
Chelsea and David also play vital roles in this book, David's was especially interesting. I cannot say what it is, but wow, did not see that coming at all. Aprilynne ties in some familiar mythology that fits well into the world of Avalon. I was intrigued to see how it played out and how David would handle the repercussions of his decisions. It was an interesting twist that was incorporated into this world seamlessly and had me looking at David a little differently as well. It made me think "Maybe he can be good for Laruel and fit in her world."
Overall, I think this series hit a bump in the middle with Spells, but Illiusions brought it back a little and Destined finished it out with a bang. I am so happy I stuck with this series to the end and reached the conclusion of Laurel's story. I will forewarn you though, the book ends and then Aprilynne has an extra chapter. It was a very bittersweet read, but one that brought us into the future giving us an update on certain character's lives. She does warn you that you might not be happy with it, but I had to know. I am not sure what Aprilynne has in store for us in the future, but I will be sure to keep an eye out for her books. If you have started this series at all, then you need to read Destined, it brings everything together and is a fantastic finale to this magical tale.
I have been waiting to get this book in my hands since I finished the jaw-dropping end of Illusions. Yuki turned out to be something I never expected but yet I was curious about her. Tamani, Laurel, Shar, David, and Chelsea were trying to get information from Yuki to no avail. Klea turned out to be the bad baddy, a very dangerous one at that. This book starts off where Illusions ended so I was ready to delve in right away.
After the first chapter, this book was non-stop action. And Tamani, Laurel, David, and Chelsea found themselves in the thick of it. Klea's plan to destroy Avalon left these four no choice but to return to Avalon to warn the fey. Klea and her army of trolls were always nipping at their heels and the fights that ensued were bloody and horrific. Pike did an AMAZING job writing the action scenes. I felt that I was right in the thick of the action and my heart pounded each time one of the main character's was close to getting hurt (or did in some cases).
Pike had built up to this moment throughout all the books and I find myself wanting to re-read them all in order to experience it again. Klea's plans were present throughout the series and I was completely duped. Even though Klea was not a good character, I found myself very interested in her background and how she became that way.
There were small moments of swoon-worthy romance between Tamani and Laurel that I cherished. But a majority of the book was them fighting for Avalon and their lives. No character was safe in this book but I felt that it made their situation more real and made me read the book that much faster to see who would survive!
I will not say if I liked the ending...but I liked how Pike left part of it open so that (hopefully!) in the future she could return to write more books about my favorite characters! Also, when the book ended there was a little Afterword from Pike giving the ending to the series the way she wanted to. I didn't know if I would like it, but I wished she would have made it the actual ending. It was bittersweet but with the preface of creating a story about what a human would do if they found out about magic I thought it was perfect.
Cover note: I loved all the covers in the series, but this one is my favorite. I love the colors and lighting of the flower very much!
I LOVED this book. I LOVED this whole series. It is so sad that it is over, but I think it was good that Laurel ended back up with Tamani. I really liked David too, and he was great to her. However, I just think that she was meant to be with Tamani from the start since they spent so much time together as children (even though Laurel couldn't remember it) and I think they are meant to have a great life together.
This book had me hooked from the very beginning. I loved that it started right where the last one left off. My review of the last one didn't post last summer (I read it on vacation and swear I typed a review on here when I was finished because reviews help me remember what I liked best and least about a book - but I couldn't find it before starting this book). This book was packed with action from the beginning to right up near the end. It was the battle of all battles for Avalon - especially for Laurel who was sent out into the human world to help prevent things such as this. This caused the pace to be absolutely breathtaking, and I LOVE THAT in a book. I hated having to put the book down to eat, drink, sleep, etc. If I had known it would have been so consuming, I would have woke up early one morning and read it from morning to night without any breaks if possible. It was AMAZING. I was sad when Shar died, and was worried when Jamison was down, but I think it is hits like that which make a great book over a good book. It pulls your heart in and your emotions instead of just your mind. I simply devoured this book as I have all of the books in this series!
I surely hope Aprilynne Pike has more stories for us that are yet to begin! I will definitely be looking for more books by her. Like I said, I wish the series hadn't ended, but I sure did like the ride and the ending was absolutely amazing!
