Deutschland im vorletzten Kriegsjahr: Aus den höheren Reihen der Wehrmacht rekrutiert sich eine Schar von Offizieren, die den Plan fasst, Hitler aus dem Weg zu räumen und die Staatsführung zu übernehmen. Die entscheidende Aufgabe fällt dem Oberst von Stauffenberg zu. Er schmuggelt eine Bombe ins Führerhauptquartier, die bei einer Lagebesprechung Hitlers explodiert. Aber der Diktator überlebt. Der Plan der Widerständler scheitert, sie werden verhaftet und hingerichtet.

Deutschland 1944: Am 20. Juli versucht eine Handvoll deutscher Offiziere, Hitler durch einen Staatsstreich zu beseitigen und somit Deutschland vom Joch des Nationalsozialismus zu befreien. Oberst Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg und sein Adjutant Werner Haeften zünden einen Bombe in der "Wolfsschanze", Hitlers Hauptquatier. Der Führer wird durch die Wucht der Explosion verletzt. Seine Trommelfelle sind geplatzt, er trägt Prellungen und leichte Verbrennungen davon. Vier seiner Männer sterben. Der schwere Eichentisch, auf dem die Lagebesprechung noch wenige Sekunden zuvor stattgefunden hatte, rettet Adolf Hitler das Leben. Der zweite Teil des Staatsstreiches, die Operation "Walküre", die die Institutionen der NS-Diktatur mit Hilfe der Wehrmacht nach und nach ausschalten soll, wird brutal von Hitler niedergeschlagen. Mit unvorstellbarer Grausamkeit übt das nationalsozialistische Regime Vergeltung an den Verschwörern und Widerständlern um General Ludwig Beck, Claus Schenk Graf von Stauffenberg, Werner von Haeften, Albrecht Ritter Mertz von Quirnheim und Friedrich Olbricht. This dramatization of the facts happened on July 20th, 1944 is the best ever filmed.
The acting is solid, the story is there and the sense of awe and terror is truly felt by the viewer.
With solid German actors like Wolfgang Preiss and Maximilian Schell in the lead roles, it is no small wonder that this 95min. Film is the better one of the bunch.
Another detail to be considered is the fact that this movie came out in 1955, barely 11 years after the facts and therefore memories of the actual facts must have been still fresh in the minds of the authors and filmmakers, as well as those who managed to stay alive after the war and in one way or another, either participated, or knew about the plot to assassinate Hitler (which by the way, was one of the many, and not the first one at that... nor was it the last.).
I can only recommend this buy. The image quality is average for the transfer, but still acceptable for such a movie, while the sound is exceptionally clear and crisp.
In my opinion it is a must buy option... up to you and your own taste to see if you, like me, will enjoy the movie, but beware younger generations, it is in "glorious" black & white, not color...

Anschauen. Pflicht hört auf, wenn es an die Moral oder Ehre geht. Wenigstens einige der höheren Offiziere haben dies damals erkannt. Und teuer dafür bezahlt. Solche Offiziere braucht jedes Land. Auch heute noch!

man sieht schon am cover das der film nicht gut sein kann weil stauffenberg hat sein linkes auge nicht sein rechtes auge verloren.
