***WARNING*** Please do NOT purchase Demons Within: Unholy Fire if you are squeamish or faint of heart. This novel contains scenes of graphic violence and sexual situations that are intended for adults and may be offensive to some readers. However, if you want to suspend reality with a gritty, raw, horror novel, please continue...

Praise for The Hidden Evil Trilogy...
"Best one yet - chilling, horrific. There were aspects of this story that reminded me somewhat of The Shining...a sort of creeping horror that was very effective."
    K. Sozaeva, Amazon Vine Voice, Top 500 Reviewer

"...grabs you by the throat and does not let go. Incredibly graphic it had me screwing my face up in horror at many of the scenes, yet eagerly clicking for the next page just to see what would happen next."
    Bernadette Davies, Amazon reviewer

Ravna thought his ordeal with the hungry ghost was over. However, when a road trip takes him on an unexpected detour, Preta resurfaces, threatening to tear apart Ravna and his new love. Ravna must again battle the hidden evil, though he now faces a choice that could destroy everything, including the Demons Within.

Any fan of Stephen King's The Shining, Clive Barker, or "American Horror Story" will love Demons Within: Unholy Fire!

    4.0 von 5 Sternen Dark follow-on to "Preta's Realm" - for horror fans! 13. Mai 2013
Von K. Sozaeva - Veröffentlicht auf
    Format:Kindle Edition
    Book Info: Genre: Horror
    Reading Level: Adult
Recommended for: people who enjoy dark horror, liked Preta's Realm
Trigger Warnings: murder, (implied) rape, sexual assault, assault and beatings (man on woman), torture

Disclosure: I edited this book for J. Thorn. I do not receive any remuneration based upon sales.

My Thoughts: This was a very difficult book to read, very dark and with ugly themes. It is a continuation of the story begun in Preta's Realm (my review linked here) and I strongly urge you to read that book before trying this one, as otherwise a lot of the information will go right over your head.

Some people might find the sometimes-recursive nature of this story frustrating, as the same story is told from multiple points of view: first by Ravna, then by Karen, then by Jasper. Each time a little new information is provided, increasing the creepiness and tension. I felt it was an effective way to build tension while providing additional information, and since it is chunks, there is no feel of head-hopping involved.

There is no technical issue that reduced my rating to four stars, it was just a question of my personal enjoyment of the story, and since it was so dark and ugly... If you liked Preta's Realm and you like horror, you won't want to miss out on this new book by J. Thorn. Check it out.

My Synopsis: After Drew disappeared at the end of Preta's Realm, Ravna moved on with his life. He has started dating the lovely Karen, and they are heading out on a road trip to let Karen have a break from her hectic and demanding job. But while Ravna has moved on and stopped thinking about Gaki, Gaki has not forgotten about Ravna...

I enjoyed this book. Nothing spectacular, but the characters were interesting and the story was good.

I did get a bit 'confused' by the repetative nature of some of the story. Even though part of it is basically told from 3 different perspectives, the text was almost exactly the same and I initially thought there was a problem with the download onto my kindle ;-)

Am looking forward to reading the final chapter in this trilogy.
4.0 von 5 Sternen ALMOST THERE... ALMOST THERE... 28. November 2015
    Von Greggorio! - Veröffentlicht auf
THE SECOND VOLUME of the Unholy Fire trilogy by the surprisingly unknown, and yet surprisingly awesome J. Thorn, follows on in a rather indirect way from book one. PRETA’S REALM ended in a very clever manner with a setting in the high security wing of the local psychiatric hospital. Book two opened in a small town set in the middle of a totally gorgeous sounding part of rural America where the local tourist attractions are the beautiful mountains, the beautiful mountains, and coming a close third, the beautiful mountains.

The town itself is dead. Built and founded upon employment by a mining company that set up their operations in the said beautiful mountains, everything fell apart (literally, *everything*) when the mining operations ceased. Whole communities disappeared, with sky rocketing unemployment, and beautiful little sub divisions became welcoming homes for faded memories, and lost opportunities.

    Oh, and demons.

So we learn that Gaki is back. And he has a new servant - Jasper the Psychotic Killer and Torturer of Lost Souls. Both parties have taken up residence in the local ghost town and one remaining (surviving) character from book one (Ravna) coincidentally is taking his hot, hot, hot young girlfriend for a drive in the same mountains that house Gaki and Co, when their engine falters and displays a ’help me’ sign. That is good news for the engine, but bad, bad, bad news for Ravna and his partner. But good, good, good (that is, great) news for the reader. Because that is when the ’fun’ begins.

Just like book one, this book is violent. Explicitly so. The language is strong, too. But fans of book one won’t mind. The book is essentially about the ongoing power struggle between Ravna, his girlfriend, Gaki and Jasper. The story is written in a series of related flashbacks which act to provide the foundation for the story’s architecture. A little surprising is how simply this mini battle resolves itself, and this in turn provides the structure for the book’s finale.

We meet a plethora of new characters in the book’s second half. And each new character has a relatively deep and interesting history to read about. Some of these new characters I truly despise. They sound evil enough on their own without being interfered with by another demon...) but some are still innocent and true of heart for the reader to develop strong emotional ties to and fear for their plight in the forthcoming closing chapter of this trilogy.

It is, however, a pity these books are so short. The writing style and action (that is, horror) is so good that you wish each volume was five hundred pages long. That would one make one awesome horror story, Mr Thorn.

Having said all of that, the reader is left a little up in the air at the book’s finale when it comes to these new characters. We presume Gaki survived his battle with Ravna (are demons spirits? Can they be destroyed?) and he has turned his attentions to capturing the minds and souls of some of the townsfolk where were called to clean up the mess from the end of the story’s first ’part’. Or has he? Or do we now have a new antagonist to be scared of? The reader doesn’t really know for sure, and two books into a trilogy, it would be nice if we could say for certain what is going on. That is my major criticism with these books. The story telling is solid, with plenty of genre specific ’fun’ (there are those quotes again), heaps of new characters and a ghost town to *die* for (!).

So in summary then, book two still gets four (solid) stars from me. It is more polished and solid than book one, the first half is (almost) brilliant but the overall reading experience is flawed by the points I have outlined above. Am I a fan of J. Thorn? You betcha! I am off to purchase and download book three and find out how it all turns out. As soon as I finish posting this review.

    Bye for now!!!!!

    J. Thorn has a way with words. He is an intelligent and creative writer, which was what brought me to read his work. With a gaggle of independent writers to choose from, there are very few authors mixed in. Thorn is one. If you want fast paced, page turning fun, Thorn is the man. Demons Within is a disturbing story and bridges the gap of this trilogy in smart form. Go ahead and grab the trilogy, choose a free weekend and discover a tale that will remove you from the bothers of your normal grind and have you escape to a dark place that Thorn will not allow you to leave.

Very well written and a far better structured plot than the first novel in the series. Although the first novel in this series is still hauntingly scary and will keep you in nightmares for weeks.
This book literally kept me awake all night until I had finished it. Its definitely a five star book.
Ive just started the third and last in J Thorn's Trilogy and I can't believe it, but its even better!
One should definitely read all 3 books in this trilogy.
