Penzler Pick, May 2000: Like many authors with ongoing characters, Robert Crais has taken a break from his famous private eye. After eight novels featuring Elvis Cole and his loyal sidekick Joe Pike, Crais has created Carol Starkey, a bomb squad veteran now doing time as a Detective-2 with LAPD's Criminal Conspiracy Section. Three years have passed since the detonation that killed Carol's partner and lover, but she is still severely scarred both mentally and physically. She can't bear to look in the mirror, and she hasn't been with another man since David Boudreaux left her bed that last morning he went to work. She gets through the day with the help of Tagamet and alcohol.

When a bomb call takes the life of another colleague, Carol begins to investigate a series of explosions that seem to be designed to exterminate bomb technicians. She soon realizes that she's "the one that got away." With the help of an FBI agent whom she loathes professionally for interfering with her job but finds attractive anyway, Carol must track down one of the most frighteningly brilliant killers of the modern age.

This edgy thriller's protagonist is one that the reader at first may have difficulty liking, but she's got a background and history that make her truly three-dimensional. One hopes that Crais, one of the handful of young crime writers capable of writing consistently luminous prose, will continue to give us characters like Carol Starkey to star in his always powerful portraits of modern-day Los Angeles. --Otto Penzler

Carol Starkey, protagonist of Robert Crais's new thriller Demolition Angel, has been as badly damaged by life as any whisky-soaked gumshoe; a bad moment three years ago cost her her lover, her physical confidence and the job on the LA Bomb Squad that she loved. When a former colleague is killed by an ingenious trap, and Pell, an obsessed federal agent, tells her about Mr Red, who blows people up for profit, but kills bomb technicians for fun, she knows that her path back to sanity lies through this case. With the attractive but secretive Pell as her guide, she explores an underworld where both she and Mr Red are fan fetishes, online chat rooms where his best killings and her best defusings are equally the currency of conversation and where she and Mr Red start a dangerous flirtation. This is perhaps the most suspenseful novel of the year--the demons that haunt Pell and Carol, the hair triggers and high explosives and dangerous minds, all combine in sequence after sequence of nail-biting intensity. From beginning to end, Crais continues to deliver, and to take nerve-wracking excitement--particularly in his almost outrageously intense final climax--further than ever before. --Roz Kaveney

5.0 von 5 Sternen Demolition Angel Rocks! 16. Mai 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
Unplug the phone. Call in sick for work or school. Once you start this awesome new novel, you won't be able to put it down!
Robert Crais is a master at creating believable characters and delivering a white-knuckle ride of suspense. Readers of his Elvis Cole novels already know this. Demolition Angel is his first stand alone book and it's an amazing novel.
Carol Starkey was horribly scarred and her lover was killed in a bombing. A few years later, Carol is tough as nails and determined to overcome her troubles. Pulled into an investigation of another bomb tech who was blown away, she has to face down all her old fears to stop a serial bomber who takes pride in killing bomb-techs. With fully realized characters and blistering conflict, Demolition Angel takes you inside the world of the bomb squad. Wait until you meet Mr. Red, the bomber who wants to be on the FBI's Most Wanted list.
This is a brilliant novel. Even while Crais gets your heart racing, he manages to explore a great many emotional truths along the way. The depth of emotion heightens the suspense. I read this book in one sitting. Robert Crais has outdone himself with this one.
Don't miss it!

5.0 von 5 Sternen White hot and explosive! 19. Mai 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
At first, I was somewhat disheartened to learn that this would not be an Elvis Cole novel. One the one hand I was looking forward to something different from Crais because he is a fantastic author, but on the other hand I need my Elvis fix! But I can now say that after reading Demolition Angel I have forgotten about Elvis (temporarily, of course).
Demolition Angel is much darker and edgier than the Elvis Cole novels. The main character, Carol Starkey, is on a path to self destruction. Bitter, alienated, and self-abusive since the bomb blast death of her partner, she must regain control of her life or be destroyed herself. While struggling with her personal demons, she must catch the killer who is targeting bomb squad technicians in a series of explosions. Is Mr. Red the mad bomber or is it someone else?
Non-stop action, intense suspense, and plenty of twists along the way lead to an explosive climax. An intelligent, multi-dimensional thriller, Demolition Angel will keep your heart racing and keep you on the edge as you race through the pages. Crais at his best matches up with anyone else. Period.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Carol Starkey-bring on more of her 18. Juli 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
I could not put down this book. I really liked the Carol Starkey character. You could feel her pain and understand how she could get so low as she has. While I have read most of the Elvis Cole/Joe Pike stories, I think that Crais most two recent novels are his best. He's only getting better. The only minor thing I didn't buy into was how quickly the relationship between Pell and Starkey escalated. They are immediate protagonists and then bam they're in love. I didn't see where the relationship built up to get to being in love.

Von Donald Mitchell TOP 500 REZENSENT
Anyone who has ever watched technicians disarming a bomb on television has probably felt gripping tension and possibly even fear. Few do not empathize with those brave people who approach bombs to make life safer for all of us. Demolition Angel is an intense exploration of the emotions and perspectives of those on the bomb squads and the warped people who make and plant these bombs. Robert Crais has succeeded in taking the reader inside the heads of those who live in a world that we would not otherwise enter and understand. Unfortunately, the book wallows in a crudity that will make you feel dirty by the time you finish reading it. I'm not sure that all of this crudity and ugliness was necessary to tell the story, and have graded the book down accordingly.

The book centers around Carol Starkey who is now a Detective-2 with the L.A.P.D.'s Criminal Conspiracy Section, who investigates bombings. Three years earlier she had been on the bomb squad. While defusing a bomb, she was severely injured and lost the man she loved. She has been trying to keep her life together since then, but has just been keeping her head above water. She smokes like a chimney, is drunk most of the time, and lives in a filthy house with no groceries. Her main connection to other people is through her shrink.

At this moment, a new explosion takes another bomb technician's life, and Starkey is in charge of the investigation. Soon, she is jockeying to keep the ATF from taking the case away from her. All the clues point to the bomber being a maniac who calls himself, Mr. Red.

The story is told from Carol Starkey's perspective and from that of the bombers you will meet in the story. The interactions are especially revealing.

The book contains a good mystery, and you will enjoy it.

4.0 von 5 Sternen New Ground for Crais 9. Juni 2000
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe
It's a pleasure to see a writer who started his career staked out in someone else's territory (with his faux Spenser/Dave Robicheaux character, Elvis Cole) break out into new ground and mine it effectively. Like *L. A. Requiem*, which put Cole's "faithful sideick" in the foreground, *Demolition Angel* proves that Crais doesn't need to imitate to succeed.
Carol Starkey is a strong character, and her buddy/partners are nicely sketched, especially Beth Marzik, who looks to be Carol's departmental nemesis and evolves into something much more complex. Moving Detective Starkey to Homicide, as is hinted in the final pages, gives her some future as a continuing character. (I'm not sure anyone could sustain a series with a central character who does nothing but disarm bombs.) Her personal life takes a pleasant, if predictable, turn as the novel concludes, one that leaves the possibility of future stories open, and she carries some still unresolved biographical baggage that you will want to learn more about.
The plot twists of *Demolition Angel* will keep you moving. We meet, in the first few pages, the serial bomber suspected in the primary crime, as well as a scattering of other, lesser bad guys. Fowles is a nasty, bent thing under his mildly attractive exterior and, interestingly, he's far from the whole story.
A pleasant surprise: Crais manages not to make a fool of himself when he writes about computers and internet. After watching Kay Scarpietta's [whatever] computer whiz niece "boot up the modem's lights and swing out on the web to access some hexadecimal online data bits" once too often, I'm always prepared for the worst when a writer pulls out a laptop.
