Kurzbeschreibung

Regarded as one of the key figures of nineteenth century realism, Henry James has become famous for his novels and tales that explore the clash between the Old World Europeans and New World Americans. Using an innovative method of writing from a character’s point of view within a tale, James’ intellectual works explore issues related to consciousness and perception, producing his own inimitable ‘impressionist’ style. Delphi Classics is proud to present the complete works of this important master for the first time in publishing history, providing every novel, tale, non-fiction work and a wealth of bonus material.

Henry James is without a doubt one of the most aknowledged american novelists. His subtle detailed description of characters, his psychography, his relatively slow, depictive writing and drama, make him one of the most interesting authors of the upper class life at the end of the nineteenth century. Dont expect lots of dramatic peaks in these books, it is the feelings and ideas that mostly change, rather than the outside world. What Maisie knew is in my opinion his absolute masterpiece, though romantics will probably shed some tears with the wings of the dove and the portrait of a lady as well... the best thing about these complete works series, is you can always pick whatever sounds most interesting to you without having to try out blind by buying one of the standard titles you find in bookstores... and it also lets you realise how much and how well this man wrote, in just one lifetime! My advice to new readers: dont just stick to the novels, try the short stories first! as an introduction to the henry james universe they serve just as well and will probably be less tiring to you... and only once you really got the spirit of the writer, and of course agree with it, which is entirely a matter of taste, go on to the big thick novels! Cause there are of course many who would find them difficult to read in the beginning, wondering all along when the actual action is going to start!

The scanning was again a bit of a mess in some places, numbers appearing instead of words and the characters'names appearing written every time in a different way, but if you are a fun of litterature you are not going to mind this much. As in other posts already said, some editing before the release of the ebook version would be a great idea. But still, you just baught 300 books with 3 euro, so it is ok, considering...

5.0 von 5 Sternen Extraordinary bargain 23. September 2010
Von James M. Rawley - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

This is indeed the complete fiction of Henry James. For two dollars you could not get more good reading. And as far as I know, a couple of the selections here, THE PRINCESS CASAMASSIMA and THE SPOILS OF POYNTON, are not available for this low a price anywhere else, let alone as part of a complete collection.

As far as I'm concerned, James is better to read in this complete fashion than Dickens, George Eliot, or other writers whose works are available on Amazon. Those writers are excellent, but spotty. James is always James: a tight, disciplined author who stays at a high level all the time.

You can dip into this collection at random and almost always find a winner. Delphi should be proud of itself.

Good responsiveness too. I contacted them here concerning a problem (since corrected by Amazon) and they were ready to help me in less than a day. It's a caring, reliable company.

5.0 von 5 Sternen must have for James admirers 7. Januar 2012
Von Michael J. Ehling - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Absolutely outstanding in completeness ... including even the plays and autobiographies as well as criticism and travel ... in beautiful formatting and ToC hyperlinking. Extraordinarily low price for such quality in an eBook.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great collection. Saves shelf space, too. 15. Februar 2012
Von LIBRARIAN - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

This remarkable Delphi set is virtually EVERYTHING one could wish for in a collected works set. Most of HJ's works are here, all content is TOC accessible, and it is well-formatted. It has also enabled me to clear three feet of shelf space in my very crowded personal library without denying me accessibility to one of my favorite authors. On the contrary, almost everything HJ ever wrote is now at my fingertips. Notice, however, I said "almost" to qualify the level of completeness; I do so because, despite its claim of being complete, this set really isn't. Delphi clearly says that some still-copyrighted works are not included. (Does that explain why "George Wetmore Story and His Friends," written in 1903, is not in this set?) Still this set has more Henry James than any other in the Kindle Store, and probably MOST of what you want to read will be found within it. I'm very happy with it and I highly recommend it.

ADDENDUM (10/17/14): The above pertained to (then) version 8. Since then, version 9 has been issued and, as per the current Kindle Store blurb, the aforementioned "George Whitmore Story and His Friends" IS now included. This makes a great set even greater (and more legitimately "complete"). If you have an older version, call Amazon Customer Service for a free update to version 9.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Kindle Edition 28. April 2013
Von Daisy - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

The two stars here have nothing to with the content of this book, which is classic. The problem is that this title does not work well with the Kindle. First the general Table of Contents is not accessible directly from the Kindle "GoTo" menu. You have to awkwardly page back through the Intro to reach it.Then the search function does not limit itself to the "book" you are reading but extends through the works, which makes it impractical. (This may be true of any of the "Complete Works of X" titles available on Kindle.) Using the search, I would sometimes end up in the wrong book, lose my place, and then have to page to the TOC to get back to where I was! Finally, for a title that comes from a professional publisher, the book contains a surprising number of typos and even some dropped text. I wish that Kindle reviews would address issues of functionality of the titles offered in Kindle version more often as, especially with classics, there is sometimes a confusing array of options and I have found that they are not equal by any means. Some are much easier to navigate than others. I've learned, for example, to avoid the "freebies" done by volunteers. It's a noble effort, but many typos and other errors make them, for me, too annoying to read with pleasure.
