Deep Purple - Machine Head (Classic Album)

Diese überzeugende Dokumentation zeichnet auf unterhaltsame und spannende Weise die Entstehung des bahnbrechenden Deep-Purple-Albums Machine Head von 1971 nach. Der besondere Reiz liegt hierbei in der Tatsache, dass die Geschichte um dieses Album von den Band-Mitgliedern und dem Band-Umfeld selbst erzählt wird. Eine anerkennenswerte Leistung, bedenkt man, dass diese wohl legendärste Besetzung ("Mark 2") von Deep Purple untereinander stark zerstritten ist. So erzählt Ritchie Blackmore seine Sicht der Dinge auch stilecht in Spielmannskleidung, umgeben von alten Schlossmauern, John Lord sitzt hingegen an seiner alten Hammond-Orgel und Roger Glover vor den Reglern eines Mischpults. Im Zusammenhang ergibt sich dennoch eine stimmige, beinahe schon wehmütige Rückschau auf die Entstehung dieses Meilensteins der Rock-Musik, der zusammen mit Black Sabbaths Paranoid und Led Zeppelins viertem Album den britischen Hardrock der frühen 70er-Jahre neu definierte.

Eingefleischten Fans wird nicht alles neu sein, was die Band oder andere Beteiligte wie ihr Toningenieur Martin Birch (u. a. Iron Maiden) zu erzählen haben. Das Erlebnis beispielsweise, welches die Inspiration zu "Smoke On The Water" lieferte, wird vielen schon bekannt sein. Aber auch die Eingeweihten kommen auf ihre Kosten, denn die Musiker kommentieren das ganze Album Song für Song, inklusive Tracks, die nicht auf der Original-Vinyl-LP enthalten waren (wie die Ballade "When A Blind Man Cries"), wobei eine Vielzahl an wissenswerten Details ans Licht befördert wird, die selbst denjenigen noch überraschen werden, der das Album in- und auswendig zu kennen glaubt.

Der Verdienst der Macher dieses Dokumentarfilms liegt vor allem auch darin, dass es gelungen ist, die sehr subjektiven Aussagen der beteiligten Personen so gegeneinander zu stellen, dass man sich als Zuschauer ein eigenes Bild von den Ereignissen machen kann. Ergänzt werden die Interviews durch sorgfältig ausgewählte Ausschnitte aus Live- und Studioaufnahmen der Zeit. Classic Albums - Machine Head ersetzt natürlich nicht das Anhören des Originalalbums, aber es ist eine ideale Ergänzung hierzu, sowohl zum Entdecken als auch zum Wiederhören. --Albrecht Volk

Der Hauptbestandteil der DVD besteht aus einem etwa dreiviertelstündigen Dokumentarfilm, der die Geschichte des Albums nach Songs geordnet erzählt, wobei die Aussagen der befragten Personen gegeneinander montiert wurden. Einen Fragensteller bekommt man nicht zu sehen. Die Interviews sind auf Englisch, Verständnisprobleme braucht jedoch niemand zu befürchten, da sich Untertitel in mehreren Sprachen einblenden lassen.

Wer sich dann noch eingehender mit Band und Album beschäftigen möchte, bekommt einen Bonusteil geboten, der weitere Interview-Ausschnitte mit den beteiligten Personen enthält und in etwa nochmal so lang ist wie der Hauptteil. Die Ton- und Bildqualität ist gut, auch das historische Filmmaterial ist akzeptabel aufbereitet worden. Inhaltlich wie technisch gehört diese unter den zahlreichen Dokumentationen über die Band sicher zu den besten. Für Fans der Band ein Muss und für alle anderen eine lohnende Anschaffung. --Albrecht Volk

The album that produced the rock masterpiece "Smoke On The Water" and in 1972 brought worldwide superstardom to Deep Purple putting them at the pinnacle of seventies hard rock. After the success of "In Rock" and "Fireball" the band decided on a European location to record their next album. They chose the Casino in Montreux in Switzerlan only to see it burn down the night before recording was due to begin. Out of the ashes of the Casino however was to come their most memorable song and their most successful album ever. With smoke literally wafting over the water of Lake Geneva the band took up residence on the Grand Hotel and in the swiftly converted corridors and cupboards of the deserted hotel recorded the album that was to become their tour de france. In exclusive interviews with Ritchie Blackmore, Ian Gillan, Roger Glover, Jon Lord and Ian Paice we take a track by track look at the making of the album. Martin Birch the original engineer and Roger Glover lead us through the original multitrack tapes.
