This is a brand new technical guide which provides a comprehensive overview of the principles underlying decompression theory. Mark Powell has written a book that for the first time allows the average diver to fully understand the principles behind this fascinating aspect of diving. This book bridges the gap between introductory books and source scientific information. What I wanted was an intermediate overview that went into more detail but wasn't written for academics or researchers. When I became a technical diving instructor I started teaching other people about decompression theory.I tried to give an overview of decompression theory at this intermediate level to give my students a better understanding of what was happening during decompression dives. This was always very popular amongst divers who, like me, had always wanted to understand more about the concepts and models underlying decompression theory. I was always being asked if I could recommend a good book which covered this area but as before, there was no such text available. Over time I started giving out notes for the decompression theory portion of my courses and these notes started building. Initially they were just a few pages but the notes became more and more comprehensive and started to cover more and more areas. Eventually they grew into this book. Um es kurz zu machen: Alle Fragen zu Dekomodellen und ihren Unterschieden auch ohne Vorkenntnisse(!) bis zu fast wissenschaftlicher Tiefe (zumindest fast auf Excerpt-Niveau) in noch nie da gewesen Tiefe und und verständlich dargestellt. Ich bin schlichtweg begeistert, z.B. von der sauberen Differenzierung des sonst doppel- bis dreideutig verwendeten Begriffs "Oxygen Window".
Auf seinem Gebiet eine ganz eigene Liga. M.E. ein verdienter Anwärter als neues Standardwerk für jeden, der nicht ewig auf OWD-Niveau dümpeln und wirklich fundiert selbst Risiken einschätzen will. Auch vor dem Kauf eines Tauchcomputers oder Dekoprogramms m.E. künftig Pflicht.

An excellent book for its intended audience

This is an excellent book for the average diver who wants to know more about decompression theory, or for the diver who is getting started in technical diving and needs a good solid background. It is important when reading this book to pay particular attention to the text and accompanying graphs or formulas. There are several typographical errors which a good reader should be able to pick up quite easily. I can strongly recommend this book.

Well written summary of theory and practice

Mark Powell's book is one of those rare books which takes complicated concepts and renders them into simple and readily understandable terms. The author is not a scientist, but a technical diving instructor whose interest goes beyond the superficial. In this excellent text he bridges the gap between short and simplistic diving textbooks and obtuse and arcane research papers. The result is short, readable and interesting, particularly for technical and serious recreational divers. A superb addition to any divers library.

This title lives up to its reputation. This is a very thorough historical and technical presentation of decompression theory yet it is presented in a language everyone can understand. The book, however, does contain a large amount of typos and misspelligns but this does not interfere with the content. It covers decompression theory as well as all related subjects including recompression, hyperbaric medecine, neurological examinations, nitrox and bubble models, etc.
If I had to use a text as a basis for a course, this would be it.
If you are interested in decompression, ratio deco and how this has evolved over the years, this is the text to use.
I would only recommend that the publisher have the manuscript re-edited for typos and misspellings.
