Kurzbeschreibung

Never in history have 1,322 words held out such extraordinary determination to be free as those found in the Declaration of Independence. In 1787, "We the people" were the three words that not only engendered a new and cohesive nation; they went on to change the face of the world as well. In 1791, the first ten Amendments to the Constitution of the United States of America, known to us as the Bill of Rights introduced the world to the concept of those singular rights that ought to belong to every free individual. In one compact volume, the full texts of both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America with all ratified twenty-seven Amendments to the Constitution are side by side - along with another of America's seminal documents, Thomas Jefferson's "Virginia Statute on Religious Freedom", an additional world-changing statement that codified for the first time that one cannot be required by law to support or prefer any belief or be punished for those one does profess - and the basis for what we have come to know as the "wall of separation" between church and state. Who we are and what we are free to be as citizens of the United States of America is contained between these covers. Cass R. Sunstein prefaces the volume with a succinct history and interpretation of the place and meaning of both the Declaration and the Constitution in American life. Enhanced by an index and suggestions for further reading, this volume, small in size but overwhelming in the impact of its contents, belongs in the home of every citizen of the United States.

Synopsis

Never in history have 1322 words held out such extraordinary determination to be free as those found in the Declaration of Independence. In one compact volume, the full texts of both the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States of America with all ratified 27 Amendments to the Constitution are side by side-along with another of America's seminal documents, Thomas Jefferson's Virginia Statute on Religious Freedom, an additional world-changing statement which codified for the first time that one cannot be required by law to support or prefer any belief or be punished for those one does profess - and the basis for what we have come to know as the "wall of separation" between church and state.

Who Americans are and what they are free to be as citizens of the United States of America is contained between these covers. Cass R. Sunstein prefaces the volume with a succinct history and interpretation of the place and meaning of both the Declaration and the Constitution in American life.

Von FrKurt Messick TOP 1000 REZENSENT
Every home in the United States should have a copy of the Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. Contrary to what is often thought, given the giant reputation and high esteem of these documents, the texts are in fact quite short - the Declaration takes but a few pages, and the Constitution (even with all amendments) takes but a few more.

This book includes a brief preface by Cass R. Sunstein, an index an suggestions for further readings on the Constitution, the Declaration of Independence, and the founding fathers. However, what really sets this volume apart is the inclusion of a lesser-known but vital document, the text of 'A Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom' by Thomas Jefferson. This is one of the foundational documents for the separation of church and state, and a guidebook for the way Jefferson and other founding fathers were thinking in this crucial and still-relevant method of governmental action.

This is a good text, interesting, with a difference, and am important piece of history and current practice for all Americans.

Not bad 25. April 2009

I bought this as a replacement for similar book I thought I had lost (The Constitution of the United States with the Declaration of Independence and the Articles of Confederation, by R.B. Bernstein). I couldn't find the Bernstein book on Amazon, so I picked this one instead.
Pros: this one is smaller, so will fit in a pocket easier; contains Jefferson's "A Bill for Establishing Religious Freedom"
Cons: missing any kind of footnotes for the amendments citing what previous article or amendment in the Constitution was modified, if any.

For the price, this one is well worth the money. Oh, and I subsequently found my copy by R.B. Bernstein, so now I think I've got the best of both.
Every American should have a copy 3. September 2007

Every American should have a copy of the Constitution and the Declaration of Independence. The addition of Thomas Jefferson's Virginia Statute on Religious Freedom completes the collection superbly and is a timely and valuable article on what our founding documents' primary author really thought about the separation of church and state. Buy this and read it. You'll be surprised how much you didn't know. It also fits in a shirt pocket, so you can have it with you whenever you want.
