After his first book, Digital Fortress, almost passed me by, he wrote Angels and Demons, which was probably one of the half-dozen most exciting thrillers of last year. It is a pleasure to report that his new book lives up to his reputation as a writer whose research and talent make his stories exciting, believable, and just plain unputdownable.

The time is now and President Zachary Herney is facing a very tough re-election. His opponent, Senator Sedgwick Sexton, is a powerful man with powerful friends and a mission: to reduce NASA's spending and move space exploration into the private sector. He has numerous supporters, including many beyond the businesses who will profit from this because of the embarrassment of 1996, when the Clinton administration was informed by NASA that proof existed of life on other planets. That information turned out to be premature, if not incorrect. The embattled president is assured that a rare object buried deep in the Arctic ice will prove to have far-reaching implications on America's space program. The find, however, needs to be verified.

Enter Rachel Sexton, a gister for the National Reconnaissance Office. Gisters reduce complex reports into single-page briefs, and in this case the president needs that confirmation before he broadcasts to the nation, probably ensuring his re-election. It's tricky because Rachel is the daughter of his opponent. Rachel is thrilled to be on the team travelling to the Arctic Circle. She is a realist about her father's politics and has little respect for his stand on NASA, but Senator Sexton cannot help but have a problem with her involvement.

Adventure, romance, murder, skulduggery, and nail-biting tension ensue. By the end of Deception Point, the reader will be much better informed about how the space program works and how politicians react to new information. Bring on the next Dan Brown thriller! --Otto Penzler, Amazon.com

sondern eine Mischung aus Agenten- Polit- und Wissenschaftsthriller. Browns bekannte Bestseller "The Da Vinci Code" und "Angels and Demons" geistern immer noch bei Gelegenheit durch manche Bestsellerlisten. Der Erfolg dieser Bücher beruht wohl auf der Mischung von Fakt und Fiktion, in der historische Geschehnisse zumeist unter dem Licht von angeblichen Offenbarungen neu beleuchtet werden. Brown greift dabei zumeist auf religiöse Themen wie die Inquisition oder das in einer männlich dominierten Kirche verdrängte Weibliche an. Diese Mischung aus Spiritualität, Historik, Religion, Verschwörungstheorie und Spannung erzeugt dabei mit einem verständlichen Stil eine Atmosphäre wie sie angenehm und spannend zu lesen ist.

Decpetion Point passt nicht in dieses Konzept. Anders als die Robert Langdon-Romane spielt er in der Welt der US-Poltik und Geheimdienste. Zwar versucht Brown verstärkt auch den Part des Wissenschaftsthrillers darin aufzubauen, doch er verzichtet auf großartige religiöse Themen. Vom Konzept her lässt sich jedoch eindeutig Browns Schreibstil erkennen. Die Besonderheit, das Buch wurde genau vor dem Da Vinci Code veröffentlicht und hätte beinahe das letzte Buch Dan Browns sein können. Wie schon sein Erstling Digital Fortress ist auch Deception Point eigentlich ein Geheimdienst-Thriller, das Genre in dem die meisten erfolgreichen US-Autoren Fuß zu fassen versuchen, wobei sie mitunter auch oft (Vatikan- oder) Religions-Thriller produzieren. Selbst Robert Ludlum (der Schöpfer der Bourne-Trilogie) legte mit Gemini Contenders einst einen solchen vor und darf als eines der Vorbilder Dan Browns gelten, besonders in Hinsicht auf die möglichst realistische Darstellung der Handlungsorte.

Die Handlung beginnt ganz friedlich an einem Morgen in Washington D.C. Rachel Sexton und ihr Vater der Präsidentschaftskandidat Senator Sedgewick Sexton treffen sich zu einem gemeinsamen Frühstück. Doch der Senator versucht nur das Frühstück für PR-Zwecke auszunutzen. Sein Wahlprogramm wird kräftig von privaten Unternehmen gesponsert, die sich von ihm eine Öffnung der Raumfahrt für Privatunternehmen erhoffen. Mit dem Kampf gegen die vielen Budgetüberschreitungen der NASA und dem Wahlversprechen die Einsparungen in Bildungsprogramme und soziale Projekte zu investieren. Schon kurz darauf wird Rachel vom amtierenden Präsidenten höchstpersönlich in Empfang genommen und anschließend auf das Milne-Eisschelf geschickt, wo eine bahnbrechende Entdeckung den Wahlkampf und das Schicksal der Menschheit verändern könnte...

Nun, Deception Point ist beizeiten nicht unspannend, aber trotz des großen Vorbildes Robert Ludlum und der Anleihen bei diesem, nur mittelmäßig. Die Handlungswendungen scheinen oft nur halbherzig, die großen Überraschungen lassen sich zwar vorher erahnen, sind aber schon zu spektakulär. Nicht notwendig wirken so manche Klischees, auch nicht die Love Story, welche geradzu vorprogrammiert ist. Über gute Ansätze kommt Deception Point nicht hinaus und das trotz so schöner Cliffhanger.

Fazit:
Ein Thriller im Stil von Dan Brown, doch ohne angeblich sensationelle Enthüllungen. All jene die sich mit Browns bekannten Werken nicht recht identifizieren konnten könnten es hier tun und eine andere Seite des Bestsellerautors erkennen.

2004 was when I was first introduced to Dan Brown. I was so intrigued by The Da Vinci Code, and although there were several flaws in it, I still enjoyed it right to the end. I was compelled to look for other books by Dan Brown. Deception Point was the next in line. It is very similar to The Da Vinci Code in the setting. It is easy to figure out the villain quite early in the book. I was not carried away by Deception Point as anticipated. Nevertheless, it too was one novel I couldn't put down easily. The plot is not as reach as those of 'Angels and Demons' and 'The Da Vinci Code' , and the pace is not as fast as either of the two. What I also found interesting about Deception Point was remarkably high amount of researched information that Dan Brown got for the novel. Nevertheless, this is a very easy book to read and quite the story is very captivating. Enjoy.

It wasn't until 2003 that I read my first novel by Dan Brown. I was intrigued by The Da Vinci Code, and although there were several flaws in it, I still enjoyed it right to the end. I was compelled to look for other books by Dan Brown. Deception Point was the next in line. It is very similar to The Da Vinci Code in the setting. It is easy to figure out the villain quite early in the book. I was not carried away by Deception Point as anticipated. Nevertheless, it too was one novel I couldn't put down easily. The plot is not as reach as those of 'Angels and Demons' and 'The Da Vinci Code' , and the pace is not as fast as either of the two.
