I wasn't sure what to expect from this book after reading a review in a magazine and honestly, the sensual cover added to my curiosity. I should mention that the title could be misleading. The book is not for "girls," in the sense "children". The photos inside are of stylish women (mid 20s to mid 30s), which I guess might suggest that the content is to instruct young women/"girls" on the more adult matters of etiquette. But the book is not written in that tone, it really could be used throughout a woman's life.
Now after having read through most sections, I am very happy with the purchase. It's a very stylish and fun reference that I've enjoyed reading. And I'm very glad that as expected and hoped, the mudane and the pleasant and not so pleasant possible realities of life are covered. There is a light and gentle sophistication to the style that keeps the reading from becoming smug or arrogrant. I don't thinking anyone would go wrong using this book as a reminder or instruction on how best to treat others well.

Very interesting

This book was fun to read. It's really neat to read something intended for a British audience, even if I ended up looking up a lot of words. At the end it just reinforced the things my mother always said, and I enjoy how unapologetic and realistic it is. Really most people would tell you unfaithfulness is wrong and just don't do it, where is this book looks at it from a less puritan point of view and discusses it in terms of what will happen to other people and how to deal with feelings. It never says what's right and what's wrong it tells what to do to get certain effects, which is always helpful especially when you're tired of reading books that just tell you how you should feel and never discuss behavior. It's such a breath of fresh air. I highly recommend this book to the socially awkward and inept like me and to pretty much everyone I know, since they might benefit from its contents. You should not follow every word to the "t", but they are good rules and ideas to keep in mind even if you are planning on breaking them anyway.

Big book, little substance

This book is beautifully laid out and the photos are great, but there really isn't a whole lot of substance to the subject matter. Each chapter is well-organized, and the breadth of topics covered are great, but when you actually read - there isn't enough detail to any one topic to be effective. And really, there's truly more style to the layout of the book/photos than there is to what the text actually says.
Perhaps if you know very little about etiquette, this book would be helpful - it's extremely basic and details are completely glossed over. Or, if you're going to the UK and know nothing about British culture, this may be helpful. However, if you're looking to handle life's tricky situations and you need a reference to the finer details of social decorum, dining, office politics, and how to deflect nosey questions, please, by all means, look elsewhere. Oh, Fleur Britten can write witty prose.. bored now. The photographer was excellent - very lovely to see, but a waste of $$. When all is said and done, the substance in here is worth about 3 dollars US. Disappointing and given the price, a little shocking.
