This book is huge and kind of expensive, and basically an incomplete catalog A-Z of death metal bands. There's background information and complete discographies for each band. The only redeeming quality of this book are the occasional rare photographs. This type of information is better served in a digital format, and is already well documented by the Metal Archives and Wikipedia. I appreciate the book format when it has a quality that is unique and exhibits sophistication, but Garry Sharpe-Young seems to just crank these out with little or no consideration of this before going to print.

First I want to apologise for submitting review before reading the book but I just can not help to warn all Death Metal fans who might consider to buy this book that it does not even mention one of the classics of the genre POSSESSED.
I know it because I bought that book and joyfully skimmed through the very moment it arrived on my table.On the back cover it says 'This book is the greatest book on the subject of Death Metal ever'...I'm sorry but no serious book on Death Metal should ever miss founding fathers of the genre.To me it is a serious blunder.I'm surprised that the author does not know the classic album by Possessed Seven Churches and one of its songs Death Metal after which the whole genre was arguably named....

This book has some very good info supplied as well as some very important omissions. Within the product description, it states "All genres old and new are analysed in depth".
Bands such as ANGELCORPSE, BEHEMOTH, IMMORTAL, DARK FUNERAL, as well as countless others have been omitted. I'm aware that the bands mentioned above would fall under Death/Black Metal, the product description also mentions the inclusion of "The Black Death Metal of Marduk". Shouldn't some of the other Black Metal heavyweights be given inclusion?
I've only recently received the book and I'm sure there are many others not included. The book is called "DEATH METAL", but I think it should include well-knowns of the off-shoot genres as well.
Not bad as a Music reference book, but it really should have included more and sacrificed SOME of the rather obscure to make it a well-rounded book.
