This deceptively titled edition consists of three sections: Lord Dunsany's story, which is lackluster at best and certainly not a "novel" (or even a novella) by any typical definition; plus the film script and an intermediate treatment. This is one case where the film greatly improves on the original.

I did read the book last year and it was at best...okay. The movie, however, was terific. Peter O'Toole was at his best. My Cocker Spaniel passed away last fall and until I saw this movie I swore I would never get another dog. Buy the video, not the book. I hope it is all true. Thr book never gave me that feeling.

This story revolves around a man who was a dog in a past life. It's a lot of fun and the former dog remembers in some strange ways what that was like. You probably will recognize a dog you've known. I did.
The ending is a little unsatisfying, but the movie version (starring Sam Neill, Bryan Brown, Peter O'Toole and Jeremy Northam) provides an elegant ending. Enjoy them both.
