I am the same generation as Dave Barry. Reading his book has taken me back in time and re-live the years with him. It was the generation that changed the world.
He writes, or should I say paints the years as they were. In a humorous way he makes it interesting, too, for the younger generations, who weren't there, which might give them more understanding for their parents or, by now, grandparents.
Then he goes on and talks about his life now, with all the bits and pieces of his mid-life problems and occurrences.
I giggled my way through the book, very enjoyable.
He writes, or should I say paints the years as they were. In a humorous way he makes it interesting, too, for the younger generations, who weren't there, which might give them more understanding for their parents or, by now, grandparents.
Then he goes on and talks about his life now, with all the bits and pieces of his mid-life problems and occurrences.

Growing old gracefully or not so gracefully is a topic that give a lot of mileage and Barry milks it for all it is worth. He doesn't leave out one aspect - sex, parents, children, decaying bodies. and he is always hilarious about it. H doesn't miss a beat. The only time he feels no irreverent jokes are called for as when he talks about his widowed mother who loses all energy to go on living and doesn't know where to go with her husband gone. Living with her children doesn't seem to give her any purpose and she commits suicide. It must be a sobering realization for her children, including Dave, that there was nothing they could do to help her make her life bearable again. But this is episode is the only serious and not-funny account in the book. Otherwise Barry does why we picked his book in the first place. To give a hilarious account of a serious topic. There are some references in the book that make it look dated now - Reagan and vice-president Quayle, for example, but most remarks in the book are absolutely timeless. Nothing changes as far as certain things go - growing old isn't a really fun and Dave Barry can write about serious topics in a funny way.

having read a great number of dave barry books, emphasis on the word "great," i can assure you this is a rollicking good read. a word of note for the dave addicts out there who haven't read this book: it contains one of the saddest, most poignant passages dave's ever committed to paper. a must read, for that alone.
