No, this is not the book for you if you have extensive experience in software design and have already absorbed the basic concepts of database design by osmosis.

This is a book for "mere mortals," just like it says. I'm a reasonably smart, reasonably well-educated person who had some computer experience, but didn't even really know what a relational database was. Through circumstances too odd to mention, I was given primary responsibility for designing a commercial web application.

I read this book cover to cover, and designed the database that became the core of the product. The product actually works, and seems to be selling. Later in the development cycle, I worked with a brilliant MIT-trained software engineer, and he found my basic db design just ducky.

I definitely owe Mr. Hernandez a beer. Figured writing this review was a reasonable substitute.

This is the BEST book there is for learning about DB design from the ground up. It moves very quickly from theory to how to practically implement a robust DB design. It assumes no knowledge, but by the end of the book you WILL be able to sit in discussions with MIS and understand and contribute to the discussion. I don't want to leave the impression, however, that this skips the hard topics: far from it. It covers Business Rules and even has some excellent forms that you can copy from the book and use in your information-gathering sessions.

Bottom Line: Get this book and get the big picture, then get the specialized book for your DBMS.

Designing a simple database, especially one that does not need to store transaction-related data, is supposed to be a straightforward process. And this book affirms this fact. Starting from a real-world situation (though somewhat oversimplified), the author takes you through a series of clearly-defined and practical steps to finish with a robust and well-designed database: ready for setting up in anyone of the more popular DBMS programs. Well, almost... The author does not discuss or even mention other design parameters, such as access mechanisms and indexes, that should be set in order to tune the database for speed and efficiency. You'll need to consult a higher-level text such as 'Handbook of Relational Database Design' by Fleming et al for this and more in-depth stuff.

This book serves as a complete, stand-alone tutorial if all you want to do is set up a simple database, and where the emphasis is on how the data should be best organized to fulfill any request for information that is based on the data. Otherwise, it is a solid introductory text or even a refresher that should make you excited about databases and the irreplaceable role they play in a world where 'information the way you want it' is king!
