In 1991 Dennett wrote Consciousness Explained, and it so burned up the religious minded they tagged it Consciousness Explained Away. Here, Dennett presses forward the implications of natural selection (the "dangerous idea" ) in a presentation most readers will find rather technical, but for those who persevere, understanding of its mechanisms, particularly the algorithms by which natural selection operates, should gradually sink in. Understanding is facilitated by Dennett's cogent organization, which accounts for all possible evolutionary outcomes (a virtual infinity of possibilities dubbed Design Space), followed by his explanation of the relentless, purposeless winnowing that results in the life-forms that exist today. Yet, however persuasive Dennett's view is, not all evolutionists share it, namely the oft-cited Stephen Gould, and readers who enjoy argumentativeness can follow Dennett blasting Gould's idea of "punctuated equilibrium" for dozens of pages. Ending with a Nietzschean explanation for human morals, Dennett's deep-diving work challenges studious readers but should survive the struggle for shelf space in big, highly evolved libraries. Gläubige Menschen laufen seit Erscheinen von Daniel Dennetts „Darwin’s dangerous idea – Evolution and the meanings of life“ Sturm gegen dieses Buch. Nun, werfen wir einen Blick auf den Text, um das ganze Theater halbwegs nachvollziehen zu können: „To put it bluntly but fairly, anyone today who doubts that the variety of life on this planet was produced by a process of evolution is simply ignorant – inexcusably ignorant” (46). Dies ist ein direkter Angriff auf die wachsende Anzahl der Kreatonisten und christlichen Fundamentalisten (in Deutschland lautstark vertreten durch Peter Hahne), die die biblische Schöpfungsgeschichte im Biologieunterricht (!!) lehren wollen.
Berüchtigt ist Dennetts Schlussfolgerung, dass „[s]afety demands that religons be put in cages, too – when absolutely necessary” (515). Religionen notwendigerweise hinter Gitter verbannen, um die Gesellschaft für ihren schädlichen Einflüßen zu bewahren. Kein Wunder, dass die Kirche da im Dreieck springt.

Doch jenseits aller Polemik, worum geht es dem Autor eigentlich? Dennett verteidigt Darwins These, dass das menschliche Leben entstanden ist durch „individually mindless steps succeding each other without the help of any intelligent supervision“ (59). Diese für viele Menschen aus welchen Gründen auch immer so schwer zu akzeptierende Tatsache analysiert Dennett mit Erkenntnissen aus der Biologie (neben Darwin vor allem Richard Dawkins), Verhaltensforschung, Philosophie (Nietzsche) und sogar der Sprachwissenschaft (Noam Chomsky).
Ergebnis ist ein intellektuelles Meisterwerk, welches es verdient hätte, Standardlektüre in Schulen und Universitäten zu werden. Denn neben der bemerkenswerten inhaltlichen Dichte, beeindruckt „Darwin’s dangerous idea“ ebenso durch seine gute Lesbarkeit, was vor allem ein Verdienst von Dennetts klarem, lockerem und manchmal provozierendem Stil ist.
Doch trotz der hier dargelegten stringenten Beweisführung für die Evolutionslehre bleibt es zu bezweifeln, ob sich ein christlicher Fundamentalist von seinem oder ihrem verquerten Weltbild abbringen lässt. Denn wie soll man gegen jemanden argumentieren, der sich schlicht und einfach auch eine absolute unfehlbare Instanz im Jenseits beruft, die per definitionem nicht wissenschaftlich nachzuweisen ist. Darauf kann auch Daniel Dennett leider keine Antwort geben.

Dennet argues his point with superb logic. This is an excellent book. But it's not for the weak minded who cling to their silly "creationism" fantasies like some who have reviewed it here. That's why Darwin's idea is so dangerous to their way of (non) thinking, and why they see it so necessary to trash Dennet's extraodinary book. There's hardly an educated person alive today who would disagree with Dennet's fundamental premise: that evolution teaches that life can, and in fact did, begin without a divine creator to guide it. Careful - this book requires you to THINK! Imagine that!

If you are extremely religious, don't read this book. If you are slightly religious, replace 'Genesis' with this book. If you are not religious, this is your bible.
That said, Dennett does not use this book to discredit 'Creation' science, he lets others do that. He uses this book to do battle with all the 'reputable' scientists attacking evolution and natural selection. He carefully guides us through the objections and shows us how, without any magic or divine intervention, every living thing came to be over the last 4 billion years. He likens evolution to an algorithm. Most computer users know of fractal algorithms. If you give them enough time they can produce pictures of incredible depth and complexity. So too has evolution, over 4 billion years, managed to produce life of incredible depth and complexity.
The book can come across as long and drawn out, but that is because Dennett takes the time to dot his "i's" and cross his "t's". He covers all arguments and aspects of evolution, including cultural evolution and memes. You may want to read Dawkins "the Selfish Gene" before you read this, as Dennett seems to agree with his ideas.
As I said, Dennett does not spend much time dealing with religion. He does take a jab at that "holier than thou" on the fringe of society group of people known as fundamentalists. He also suggests that religion might end up in a "cultural zoo", otherwise known as a museum.
Daniel Dennett, truly a valuable volume in the "Library of Mendel".
