*****
Caspia Chastain is finally coming to terms with the carefully buried secrets of her hometown and bloodline. Life is returning to what passes for normal. Ethan is learning to live with life in Whitfield. Her brother is so healthy it's mildly terrifying. She hasn't drawn the future in ages, her school schedule is creepy professor free, and her job as Whitfield's only Coffee Goddess remains secure.

But someone is kidnapping Nephilim descendents and using them to build an army. An unpredictable new gift threatens to consume her. With it comes a persistent dream: a strange young man with gifted blood who may hold the key to her ancestry. Whitfield has enough buried secrets to protect its residents, though, even if that protection comes with a price.

Ethan has secrets, too. He's never spoken of his long life before meeting Caspia. When his past catches up with him, it could tear their relationship and the Realms apart. Soon, Caspia and Ethan must discover if the light and life they've built together can withstand the gathering darkness.

i will REMEMBER these characters! 2. Juni 2011
Von Elizabeth A. Everson - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com

Wow! Like the author, I read at least a book per day, and I love my kindle (I should really give my kindle a name...) because it has made this so much simpler with the inexpensive, instantly obtained and self published books. I have run into a few authors who really deserve to be in print; are, in fact, better than a lot of what is. This author is one of them. Her characters are memorable (which means a lot for someone who reads so many books so fast that the characters start to blend together) and her locations are so well described I can easily haunt them as I read.

This second book in the trilogy is better than the first. I liked the first one a lot but it wasnt compelling. This one is. I love that the characters are multi faceted--never just Dark or just Light. They actually change and grow. Things are HAPPENING here. I mean, how often do the people in paranormal stories actually get their wishes granted and not just for the sake of a plot point? (I am being deliberately vague so as not to spoil the story if you haven't read it yet. )

I must especially say to the author that the first part of chapter 27 is genius. I really feel like she is getting better at crafting words and worlds as the book moves along. At this rate, I have no doubt her next one will be even more cohesive and empty of non essentials.

Thank you, thank you, to your crazy self (I read the bio at the end, I know you are!). Good luck with your developing skills and talent. I look forward to more!

keeps on getting better 1. Juni 2011

(beware of spoilers)
I am not sure what exactly draws me into these books but I am very intrigued with them. In this second installment, we watch Ethan, Caspia and Logan trying to come into terms with what happened at the end of the first book. Ethan is trying to get used to being human, Logan is trying to get used to "living" and Caspia, well she is trying to find who she is... I think there are major improvements in this book. It seems like delayed release gave some time to the author to make her book a better product and I salute her for her good work. We get to learn more about the town, its unique inhabitants, Caspia's family history and Ethan's past. Also we finally have a name and a "face" for the evil character. There are several events going on to keep you glued to the pages (well screen), and every little detail you learn about the characters open up more and more questions (at least in my mind).
There are some minor points that bothered me here and there. For instance, the way a scene ends at the end of a particular chapter does not fit how the next chapter starts. There are some sections where I don't really buy the reasoning behind Caspia's actions. If you are seeing some guy in your dreams and learning bunch of stuff about your history from him and you are not "attracted" to that person, you can't really explain that the reason you hide this guy from your boyfriend is because you are worried how he would feel about it. From what is described in the book, I didn't get the sense that she should really feel guilty about her interactions with Jack. I do hope that their relationship will not turn into that "thorn between two guys" deal that seems to be very popular... There were some hints about it and I hope I am wrong about that. Also, she really does not have any ties to "her people" and she doesn't know her history that well. I find it a bit plausible that she flips out on Ethan when she learns his role in her people's history (especially after what he has done for her brother). I guess it works for the story but not so much for the character. Finally, there seems to be too many loose ends that needs attention, too many conversations that were left up in the air and there is only one more book left. I do hope that we will get to see events developing and resolving in this series even if it may take 2 more books :)!!!. Overall, I enjoyed reading this book and recommend this series to the fans of the genre...

Excellent sequel! Even better than the first. 24. Juli 2011

I loved this book! If I could give it more than 5 stars I would. The first book in this trilogy, Gifts of the Blood, gave us an intriguing introduction to Caspia, Ethan, Logan, and the others in the town of Whitfield. It whetted my appetite for Darkness in the Blood, which did not disappoint. The second book in a trilogy is all about MORE. With her beautiful and vivid descriptions, Vicki Keire takes us deeper into the mythology and backstory of the characters. The action, swoon-worthy romance and plot twists made me wish that I didn't have to do anything besides read and find out what was going to happen next!
The ending, while it did leave quite a few unanswered questions, left me satisfied and excited for the next book.

Was this the real curse of being mortal, the real reason people died? Not because our bodies gave out with age, or caught diseases, or stopped working? I wondered if it wasnt the weight of life itself that brought us down in the end. Death by inches, bought by the slow unfolding of pain-filled knowledge? The realization that, no matter whom we loved or how well or for how long, we all walked into death alone, with only our experiences for company? "e;

What the hell were you thinking? That Caspia would want her cat, he said archly, as if transporting cats through time and space wrapped in modern-day celestial battle armor was the most logical thing in the world. I also watered your plants and checked your mail. Your have a most pressing offer from the cable company. "e;
