Dexter, als Kleinkind von seinem späteren Adoptiv-Vater aus einem Hafencontainer voller Leichen und Blut gerettet, entwickelte als Teenager den ununterdrückbaren Drang zu töten, einen Teil seiner Persönlichkeit, die er den "dark passenger", den dunklen Passagier, nennt. Als sein Adoptiv-Vater diese SEite in ihm erkennt, lehrt er Dexter nur jene zu töten, die er als Mörder entlarvt. Und so geht Dexter seinem Verlangen nach Folter und Tod nach. Im Übrigen ist Dexter der "Gute" des Buches.
In "Darkly Dreaming Dexter" geschehen grausame Morde. Die Opfer, allesamt Prostituierte, werden in Einzelteilen, blutleer und hübsch verpackt an verschiedenen Orten Miamis abgelegt und Dexter, der das Gefühl hat, einen Spielgefährten gefunden zu haben, sucht fieberhaft nach dem Täter, um ihn seiner Kollektion einzuverleiben. Doch scheinbar hat der Täter das gleiche im Sinn und so beginnt schon bald ein blutig-düsteres Katz-und-Maus-Spiel, bei dem es offen ist, wer welche Rolle inne hat und Dexter, der bis zu diesem Punkt eine emotionslose kalte Persönlichkeit war, erfährt zum ersten Mal Gefühle.
Jeff Lindsays Debüt setzt die Meßlatte für das Crime-Genre nicht nur höher, es setzt sie neu. Überraschend, spannend und unvorhersehbar führt es den Leser auf eine dunkle Reise durch das sonnige Miami, deckt das Böse im Menschen auf und zeigt ganz deutlich, dass manche Menschen nur lächeln, um ihrem Gegner die Zähne zeigen zu können.
"Dexter" läuft inzwischen mit der 2. Staffel auch als Serie auf dem amerikanischen Sender Showtime und wird 2009 in Deutschland ausgestrahlt. Die erste Staffel behandelt das erste Buch.
Lindsays "Held" ist ein höchst widersprüchlicher Charakter: Von einem Polizisten erzogen, der seine dunkle Seite früh erkannte, lässt Dexter seine Mordgelüste nur an anderen Mördern aus. Dank Dexters rudiemntär vorhandenen Moralvorstellungen und seinem sich selbst gegenüber abschätzigen Humor, vermag der Leser dann doch eine gewisse Sympathie für die Hauptfigur aufzubauen.
Zur Handlung: Dexter wird mit Morden konfrontiert, die seinem Stil sehr ähnlich sind und beginnt an seiner eigenen geistigen Gesundheit (ähem) zu zweiflen. Die Auflösung des Rätsels ist etwas klischeehaft, aber der Roman ist dennoch interessant aufgrund des originellen Protagonisten.
Einige Beschreibungen in diesem Buch sowie in der Fortsetzung sind allerdings nichts für zarte Gemüter
Darkly Dreaming Dexter, published 2004 by Vintage Crime, is the first novel of the Dexter Morgan Series. It also is the base of the television programm Dexter. In this novel author Jeff Lindsay created the probably first likable serial killer in history.
The book is written in a first-person view and the reader gets all the secret thoughts and feelings of Dexter. You understand why he does what he does and learn to love the character through out the novel. Dexter researches his victims very conscientiously to make sure they are guilty.
Because his father understood very early what has been wrong with Dexter, he taught him how to kill. Dexter has a certain procedure and it is very facinating to follow this. At the same time Dexter has to watch out for his other life. He has a job, family and friends. Nobody should find about what he does. That gives the novel the second interesting action. All places and situation are described well. Even though Dexter seems to have a lot of luck the novel is still believable and to a certain point realistic. He also his very smart and educated, he uses a lot of altarations such as Darkly Dreaming Dexter. The other killer appearing in this book also tells you a lot about the character. Dexter has to find out about himself and his beliefs. Lindsay included very interesting cutbacks which let the reader get a better understanding of Dexter.
Dexter also contains black humor. Everything that happens in the book happenes through his lense so it is not only frightening but also funny to read. It certainly isn't for younger children but everybody who likes a combination of funny and bloody thrillers should have read this book.
