Amazon.co.uk

This is volume two of William Shatner's excellent mirror universe trilogy, continuing the story begun in Spectre. Captain James T. Kirk's counterpart, the brutal Tiberius, has turned up in the 24th century, where he threatens to take control of the Federation. Starfleet has been infiltrated by mirror universe doubles, even more difficult to spot than Changelings, and Starfleet Command is worried. Kirk is determined to defeat his evil double, a determination that becomes very personal when an attack on his pregnant wife Teilani, at their wedding celebration, leaves her on the brink of death. At odds with Starfleet over his methods (as usual!), Kirk is assisted by Spock, McCoy, Scotty, the mirror Spock and the mirror Janeway. Working alongside Captain Picard, they attempt to uncover Tiberius's plot. Matters are confused by the mysterious Project Sign, a Starfleet operation so classified that there are no records anywhere of its personnel or advanced ships. Shatner's action-packed story ranges across the galaxy to great effect, setting some of the action on DS9, some aboard the Enterprise-E, and including many of the major characters from all four series. Shatner's writing is reminiscent of his acting--larger than life, at times technically suspect, but hugely energetic and enormous fun. Volume three, Preserver, should be a cracker. --Elizabeth Sourbut

From Library Journal

In Dark Victory, the mirror universe is a dim shadow of the Federation, ruled by a cruel tyrant, Emperor Tiberius. Much to the dismay of James T. Kirk, Tiberius is also Kirk's double and is determined to destroy him, whom he considers to be a weak and embarrassing twin. The action can be a bit confusing for listeners unfamiliar with Spectre, the first title in this series, but it doesn't take long to get one's bearings. Unfortunately, those looking for a satisfying conclusion must wait for the third installment. Shatner is in top form and, along with great sound effects, does an admirable job of resurrecting his signature character. Trekkies of all stripes will clamor for this one, but be prepared to purchase the entire series, as individual titles do not stand alone. Recommended for all sf collections. A few galaxies over, the Star Wars contingent is having its own set of problems. Although Emperor Palpatine is dead, a powerful Ruling Council continues with the empire's plans. Dark Lord Carnor Jax is determined to claim the throne, but he must first eliminate Kir Kanos, the only member of the emperor's elite bodyguard to survive after Jax's treachery toward his emperor and fellow guardsmen. Seeking refuge from Jax, Kanos finds himself allied with rebel forces. But Kanos owes allegiance to no one, and rebel leader Mirith Sinn cannot trust the enigmatic warrior whose loyalty lies with a dead emperor. This dramatized production uses multiple voices and searing sound effects to keep imagination flowing, but the ending is rather abrupt, eliciting vague disappointment rather than anticipation for the next title in the Crimson Empire series. Recommended only for libraries with an extensive Star Wars collection.ASusan Dunman, Murray State Univ., KY

Kirk vs. Kirk; the only true matchup. That, and now Shatner is giving the fans what they always dreamed of yet again; now he is going to try and tackle the whole big 2001-ish mystery of the Preservers. His whole series of books has been about fulfilling the wishes and dreams of all the fans (unlike the people who are running things these days) The thing that has amazed me about Shatner's books is that he writing the continuing saga, and it really is about one universe. All the series and movies are seamlessly connected, and with his books you really get a great sense of "The big picture" I always was dissappointed in the original series, we never got to see the evil, mirror Kirk. Well, just as Kirk is awesome and good, his mirror image is all that reversed! Scary! Once again, the love and fire for Star Trek and its characters is shown throughout and the pacing is great. These books are so great, they go by WAY too fast! There is even an X-Filesish type mystery twist to this whole thing, and the ending really leaves you hanging. I would do just about anything, and pay just about anything to see Shatner's books made into movies. I defy anyone to show me anything Trek in recent years that comes anywhere close to the quality in Shatner's books. The most recent thing you will find is Star Trek 6. After that... forget it! It's so awesome to see all our favorite characters working together, and it's realistic, because they don't always get along. A lot of history is covered too, and a historical moment occurs in this book; something we have all waited a long time for. I am always amazed, but Shatner seems to be able to come up with some many new, fresh, and big ideas (along with the help of the Reeves-Stevens, who are awesome as well)It's pretty obvious that Shatner is on the side of the fans here, and his books are a response and a backlash against the sub-par mediocrity that the powers in charge have allowed Trek to plummet to. I can't wait for the next one. I feel just like I used to waiting for a new Trek movie. These books are that good and deserve the highest praise. These are truly Star Trek at its best. This is the Star Trek that has survived for over 30 years. You want to what Star Trek is about and why it has lasted so long and has such a broad appeal: Read Shatner's books! Dear Mr. Shatner, Thank you for giving the fans what they want. You have proven your love for Star Trek, and I only hope that maybe you, Mr. Nimoy, and some others can do something before Trek drowns in the watered down political correct, soap opera slump it has found itself in in recent years. Trek is dying because it is being run by people are who interested in the bottom line: the almighty dollar. That is all good and fine, but read Shatner's books, and see what knowledge and love for the thing does. Thanks Mr. Shatner!

Von K. Beck-Ewerhardy TOP 1000 REZENSENT
Format:Gebundene Ausgabe

corridor book doesn't do credit to the non-kirk characters
I can't believe these 5 star reviews. Try to summarize the book, guys, and you'll see it's an in-between-events type of book. A corridor. Lesen Sie weiter...
