The exciting tale begun in Jedi Apprentice: The Rising Force continues in Jedi Apprentice: The Dark Rival. While thankful for Obi-Wan's life-saving help on the trip to Bandomeer, Qui-Gon must put aside his mixed feelings over the young apprentice and take care of his peace mission. But he soon finds out that he's been tricked--not only did the planet's government not call for him, but the request may have come from his former-apprentice-gone-to-the-dark-side, the sinister Xanatos. Qui-Gon stays on Bandomeer to help rival mining companies there negotiate and to find out more about his fallen Padawan. Obi-Wan, of course, pitches in again, and the bond between the two grows. Classic tale of Light vs. Dark,

All the darksiders seem to be cool, and Xanatos is no exception. Although one of the shortest books in the series, this is jam-packed with action, and the plot is interesting, thick, and full of twists. Qui-Gon must put his skills to the test to outsmart his former Padawan, and Obi-Wan seems to cause more trouble than he is worth. But Jude Watson's first addition to the series is no disappointment. It delivers in every way, and I highly recommend it to any Star Wars fan.

This book seems to forget that at the end of the prior one, Obi-Wan had came to the understanding that he would never become a Jedi Knight, and he accepted it. But right from the begining of this one, he was again hopefull. His acceptance was a part of why Qui-Gon started gaining respect for the young Obi-Wan. I just found the change between the end of the last book and the beginning of this one odd.The only problem I have with this book is the price. I didn't realize just how short it was. It took me just an evening to finish. I also had read the previous book the night before (that tells you just how short they are). A worthy sequel,

Jude Watson takes over where Dave Wolverton left off (though I like Wolverton better) with a slightly shorter novel set on Bandomeer. Young Obi-Wan is frustrated with the stagnant job to which he has been assigned, and begins digging through records to discover the person who blew up a mine.Meanwhile, Qui-Gon's concentration on his mission is sent spinning with a new arrival: his ex-apprentice Xanatos. The story of Xanatos's exit from the Order is deep and disturbing, and the lightsaber battles are impressively written. A familiar face is young Si Treemba, the Arconan who Obi-Wan befriended previously. The newer characters are somewhat less vibrant than Wolverton's, but still memorable. The main flaws appear to be: the cover art of Qui-Gon is clearly lifted from TPM, Clat'Ha is a nebulous presence, Obi-Wan seems to shift backward (not impossible, but odd), and the planet that Qui-Gon considered dangerous in the previous book seems quite tame.
