"A superior novel, well written and plotted, with a convincing backdrop about a continent that rarely features in crime fiction." --Marcel Berlins, THE TIMES "Fast paced and slick, this is the first in what could well be an outstanding series." --Laura Wilson, GUARDIAN "A Dark Redemption is a clever, multi-layered beginning to a promising new series . . . Sherez does a masterful job with a particularity haunting plot."--Henry Sutton, (Book of the Week) "The Daily Mirror" "This intriguing and well-written thriller is highly original . . . Sherez ventures into a part of London that crime fiction readers probably never see. A salutary read, highly recommended."--Jessica Mann, "Literary Review"

A Dark Redemption introduces DI Jack Carrigan and DS Geneva Miller as they investigate the brutal rape and murder of a young Ugandan student. Plunged into an underworld of illegal immigrant communities, they discover that the murdered girl's studies at a London College may have threatened to reveal things that some people will go to any lengths to keep secret...

Unflinching, inventive and intelligent, A Dark Redemption explores a sinister case that will force DI Carrigan to face up to his past and DS Miller to confront what path she wants her future to follow.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Joseph Kony - The Novel! 10. März 2012
Von Love Crime Fiction - Veröffentlicht auf
Format:Kindle Edition
I was in the middle of reading this book when Inivisible Children's Stop Kony 2012 campaign went viral. Before starting A Dark Redemption I'd never heard of Kony and now the whole world has!
A Dark Redemption is a compelling and atmospheric mystery novel set in London with several flashbacks to Uganda. Joseph Kony and the Lord's Resistance Army are at th heart of the plot.
A Ugandan student is murdered in her London flat. When detectives Jack Carrigan and Geneva Miller begin to investigate they realise that the case reaches back to the atrocities committed by Joseph Kony in Uganda.
Sherez handles the sensitive material well, explaining the history of Uganda and Kony's LRA in short but detailed bursts. He presents a stunning portrait of London, a place where ex-child soldiers and other immigrants hide in the shadows.
This is also a tightly written and incredibly fast moving page-turner of a mystery.
Carrigan and Miller are great pairing, reminding me of Mulder and Scully's relationship in The X Files, while the prose is surprisingly good for this kind of book.
There are stains of Michael Connelly's Bosch series as well as a Harlan Coben-esque twist near the end that I certainly didn't see coming - but it is the use of Joseph Kony and the awful plight of the child soldiers which makes this book so unusual and interesting. It certainly left me haunted after I'd finished it, and I feel I now know a lot more about Kony and the issues surrounding the conflict in Uganda.
If the recent Kony campaign has made you want to learn more, this is a great place to start.

5.0 von 5 Sternen A Very Dark Redemption 20. November 2012
Von Adrian Seel - Veröffentlicht auf

A most impressive book, rather confusing to start with but well worth persevering. The author is clearly smart and articulate (you may need the assistance of the dictionary once or twice). The tension is palpable, some of the scenes terrifyingly graphic. I've already bought Sherez's Black Monastery and await the return of Carrington and Miller next May. Overall a masterful example of the story tellers art.

Having not read anything else by Sherez I was looking forward to starting the first in the Carrigan and Miller series. Also knowing that there has only been one follow up to date (Eleven Days published in 2103) I know I’m not too far behind. The pairing of the unlikely two lead characters works extremely well given their backgrounds and personal history. It took me quite a few chapters to really get under the skin of Jack Carrigan but I really liked this weirdly private and quirky bloke. Except as the story progresses you realise that quirkiness is just his defence mechanism to not allow people to delve too close. On the opposite side, Geneva Miller is clawing her way back after a demotion and is finding it hard trying to keep both sides of the fence happy. I warmed to Geneva more than Jack but by the end of the book I couldn’t imagine either of them working with anybody else.

Characters aside the story was quite something. Taking us through war ravaged countries and then being dragged to the present murder that has taken place in London of a young female Ugandan Student. Sherez clearly has the knowledge and maybe experience in managing to write about this subject with such conviction. There were parts that had my stomach turning; but in the back of my mind the brutal reminder that although this is a work of fiction, the history of some of these countries is shockingly real. There are plenty of twists in this complex book and I thoroughly enjoyed it from start to finish. This is most certainly a series which I will be continuing and would definitely put it on the recommended list.

Wonderful, wonderful police procedural. Full of depth and texture. The two key characters are real, they have real problems, real emotions. One of the best procedurals I have read in a long time!

A good story, long winded in places. Never got to the stage where I couldn't put it down. At the price I paid though, no complaints.
