A child is placed in Daredevil's care. A new-born babe which might be the saviour or it might be the bringer of the Apocalypse. What is a man to do? Protect it or kill it?
Kevin Smith is the man behind films such as "Clerks", "Chasing Amy" or "Dogma" and he brings his knack for dialogue and interesting situations to the comics. The final product is much wordier than the usual comic-book, but that is not a bad thing at all. Combined with Quesada and Palmiotti's artwork this is a gorgeous book with good solid storytelling, but also loads of visual jokes for comic-enthusiasts to find. Also, computer-colouring is used to enhance the book for once. Vibrant shining colours give the otherwise dark and shady pages life.
The first 8 issues of Kevin Smith's restart of the Daredevil series is collected in this book. Comic-fans will be glad to hear that although this is a new beginning, all of Matt Murdock's history is kept and some of it even integrated in this story. Readers who are first exposed to Daredevil or the Marvel Universe in general might be a little lost at times, but will be able to work their way through the story all right, although the revelation of the baddy might be a little lost on them. The story is not perfect, though. I enjoy the twists and turns the story took, but in some parts the villains plans worked out too well (drugged people had exactly those hallucinations he wanted them to have, for example). I was also disappointed tat one major plot point was done away with as "coincidence" I hope this will be addressed in a later story at least. On the whole a very good book, though.
