Aidan has always played it safe. Instead of pursuing his dream of creating innovative music that makes his soul sing, he settled for a degree in software, a job in a cubicle, and a spot in a generic band with his buddies.

And he's always been straight. But when he's seduced by magnetic local literary luminary Dario, Aidan must decide whether to keep playing it safe, or succumb to a ravenous passion and a nourishing love unlike anything he's experienced before. Will he find the courage to go after real happiness if it means admitting he's in love with a man?

Their journey together isn't easy. Sometimes it isn't safe. Even if Aidan has the courage to admit he's in love with Dario, can he endure the repercussions of the traumatic event in Dario's past?

This novel has mature content and is intended for readers over the age of eighteen. Although this is a story about two men falling in love, there are extended, explicit sex scenes, including some BDSM, m/m/m and m/m/f scenes. There are references to sexual violence which may be a trigger for some readers, although there is no graphic depiction of rape in the book.

4.0 von 5 Sternen I had a hard time... 18. Januar 2015

... getting into this because of the writing style. Sentences that ran on for more than half a page made for laborious reading.

However the story was lovely (if a bit saccharine taken by itself), and beautifully kinky. Dark even, with the "kink" (the quotation marks are intentional because I'm reluctant to call something so necessary for these character's peace of mind, "kink") serving as some kind of catalyst or healing agent for one character's past trauma, and as a crowbar for the other to burst his bonds of conventional safe living.

I liked the execution of the gay-for-you in this book; Aidan isn't suddenly revolted by women, he still desires them even as he's long ago come to love Dario.

For whom it may concern: There's one m/m/f BDSM threesome scene in here. Just saying

This is one astounding romance, full of eroticism, deep and many times dark emotions, where the feelings are depicted in achingly and excruciatingly heartfelt detail. It starts easily enough with a little tryst between a straight man, Aidan and Dario, a gay writer and the owner of a commune art space when people gather during the weekends to showcase their art and listen to underground bands. Aidan is the lead singer of one of these bands but at the same time holds a regular corporate job. After a bumpy start, when they split for a couple of months after A does something quite stupid, they settle in a fledging, budding relationship. Aidan feels like waking up, at last, after a life conforming to others' expectations, and they begin to explore what they have. But nothing is so easy. They must deal with serious trouble in the communal place and worst, it brings back an episode from Dario's dark and traumatic past. I will not reveal more of the plot, but let me tell you, the writing is so very intense. The story delves into the intricate, many sided aspects of BDSM, it's psychological and emotional needs and reasons.
As I said, at the beginning seems to be another GFY romantic sexy story but soon enough develops in ways not so your regular romance that can be uncomfortable for some readers of the m/m genre. To make myself clear: if you are looking for a cupcake, overly sweet and full of fluffy frosting, this is not. This is the "seven sins chocolate cake", sophisticated, decadent, dark and a bit sweet as well. Eaten with the best of champagne.
There are kinks galore, an MFM threesome, another MMM, just to mention something. The book, for moments, can be quite overwhelming as Dario & Aidan explore their love. their psyches, their sexual life. There was a moment in the interaction between the 2 MC and a third part that I actually felt Aidan's anxiety, my hands were trembling, my heart was hammering, I truly felt with him.
This is a book that at times, will make you consider the need to refresh your knickers and at other times, reach for a Xanax... or ten. It's an absolutely fascinating story, wholly recommended and worth it. Usually, I avoid to read books that have threesomes and /or kinky plays, I find them unbelievable or just silly porn smut. But I never felt I was given porn while reading Dangerously happy, not at all.
Finally, a recommendation: Don't read it while in public transportation or in company... unless it's a very very naughty company :-)
Ah! and what a beautiful cover!

Story Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Heat Rating: 5 out of 5

I purchased this book, as I do a lot, based on the cover.

The story starts off slow, sweet, and endearing but doesn’t stay that way as the plot slowly shifts to dark secrets and past traumas. If you only looked at the cover, you’d believe the book was strictly M/M, but that is not the case. There is both MMF and MMM ménages a trôis. While for me these aren’t bad things to have in a story, at first glance, I hadn’t expected them. Other things that some may not like include: rape fantasies, humiliation, references to rape. All of which I could live without.

I think there is more to this book than just a love story between two guys. Dario is a gay, tortured writer with a past that haunts him. Aiden is a "straight" part-time musician who has an un-fulfilling day job. They have been around each other in the same circle for a few years but were basically acquaintances until one night when they were unexpectedly alone together. After Aiden plays a song for Dario, then read his book with unexpected results on Aiden’s part, they take tentative steps to act on their attraction. They both have issues to work out on their own and together, which made them jumping into BDSM and threesomes so fast, one with a female and one with a very dominating man, hard to believe and/or understand.

In the end, this is an intimate, erotic, and eerie read. It would benefit from some tidying up; spelling/grammar, plot-wise. I would also recommend the author not use words that would require some people to have to stop reading and grab a dictionary to get the meaning of the word. I couldn't quite sink my teeth (so to speak) into the story, which kept me from really enjoying. It felt more like I was being told what happened than seeing what was happening for myself.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Sensual, emotional, beautiful and erotic. 3. Juni 2014

*sigh* I wish this book didn't have to end, I will have a hangover for days. Aidan; sweet, courageous, loving, caring, naive, kind and thoughtful. Dario; intriguing, sensual, loving, insightful, brave, erotic, unabashed where Aidan is concerned, beautiful. There is not one part of my soul that these two did not touch. I am not someone that cries about anything, yet, this book made me cry, whether it was the emotional aspect of it, the love they have for each other or the situations that arose, I can't really say for sure. Very few books have gotten this reaction from me before, I read an average of five books a week, so to say it surprised me is an understatement.

So beautifully written, so thought out. Varian made me, as a reader, feel like I knew these characters, like really knew them. I could imagine what was happening to them and feel what emotions they were going through. Beginning, middle and end, it was perfection coming together. It was erotic at just the write times, enough to make you read one-handed...;)

I just don't know what else I could say, it's been so long since I've read a book that has it all. Just the right amount of drama, nothing forced about, it was straightforward and did not drag out forever like a lot of books. Somewhat controversial in topics but as someone who has experienced some of them, I was not triggered nor did I believe that the story could have gone without them.

This is the first book of Varian's that I have read, I know it won't be the last.

Not many writers can create beautiful angst and tension with romance in its purest form. Dangerously Happy does just that. The sex is beautiful, smoking hot, and builds the plot into a crescendo of emotional challenges between two lovers. You accompany both main characters on their journey to self discovery experiencing their personal struggles and glorious victories. An excellent read, that I highly recommend!
But some advice before you sit down with this book---make sure you're wearing flame retardant underwear. Not even a cold shower is enough to bank the heat on this one.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Do Not Judge A Book by It's Cover 30. Mai 2014
Von Dbozz - Veröffentlicht auf

WARNING: This is M/F/M, not M/M. If you're looking for a good BDSM M/M novel, look elsewhere.

This book had a slow start and when it finally got legs, lo and behold, the legs were female! Indeed, the first, extremely graphic and very long BDSM scene has a female bottom with two male tops. It came as a total surprise and a total gross out to me. Worse, it goes on interminably. I wore out my trigger finger tapping and scanning the pages of my Kindle to find one that finally didn't have the name Vera on it. By the time I did, the bloom was off the rose and fortunately, I was still in time to return the book to Amazon. (They're great when it comes to stuff like that.)

No wonder I haven't seen this writers name on any of the M/M lists since I've been a member of Goodreads. I've just been lucky, I guess.
