Lieutenant John Dunbar wird auf eigenen Wunsch an einen (sehr weit außengelegenen) Außenposten versetzt und schließt nach kurzer Zeit Bekanntschaft mit den Comanches, indem er das Leben einer Comanche-Frau rettet. Mehr und mehr wird er in den Bann dieses Volkes gezogen. Zunächst noch mißtrauig begutachtet, wird er aber schnell ein Mitglied des Stammes und erlernt schnell deren Sprache und Lebensweise durch eben jene Frau, dessen Name "Stands With A Fist" ist. Nach einiger Zeit muss er sich eingestehen, das er mehr Comanche im Herzen als Weißer ist und beschließt ganz bei ihnen zu bleiben. In "Stands With A Fist" hat er seinen Seelenpartner kennen und lieben gelernt und darf sie schließlich heiraten. Gerade als es scheint, dass sein von ihm gewähltes Leben perfekt scheint, bahnen sich Soldaten der US-Army einen Weg durch die Prärie...
Ein wirklich packendes Buch und das obwohl ich den Film schon einige Male gesehen habe! Das Buch ist in kleinen überschaubaren Chaptern unterteilt und so durchfliegt man es quasi. Die Vokabeln sind leicht verständlich, aber schaffen lebhafte Szenen. Und dem aufmerksamen Leser wird nicht entgangen sein, dass es ein paar Szenen gibt, die nicht verfilmt wurden und einige Filmszenen stark vom Buch abweichen.

I saw the movie years ago and loved it, I only recently read the book - I think it is the first book I have read that was clearly written to be a movie.
It is very difficult for a film to effectively capture the subltlies that can be easily developed in text - in my opinion Mr Blake didn't even try. As a 1st book it is obviously a good start, but still glaringly amateurish. And I don't mean the simple sentences and short words - Hemingway elevated extremely simple prose to a high art, as did Twain. This book suffers from being too simple in its plot and development - there are no subtleties to what is happening inside Dunbar, or Stands-with-a-Fist, the Indian vs white man issue is too much in your face and cliched.
Probably the worst part of the book though, is the end. After developing a good plot, Mr Blake wraps it up in just a few snetences. It leave one with the impression that you lead up a hill to view...nothing. Mercifully, we were spared additional cliches of red vs white, but we were also spared *any* meaning. It just stopped!

This is a fairly short simply written book that is absolutely wonderful. It's not *literature*, but so what? A man's journey to find himself, after experiencing the horrors of the Civil War, including nearing committing suicide, leads him towards a rendevouz with the Lakota Indian tribe. After extensive soul searching and communing with the Indians, he does find himself. It's not just about cowboys and indians, although the decimation of the populations of the Great Plains Indians is a subtle undertone through out the book.

real people behind the story

A quality book for teenagers to elderly men and women.
I thought this book tied in excellantly with the movie, it gave you more information and told the story to a higher degree.

lets you know how the Indians felt
