Kurzbeschreibung

'Dan Taylor is Giving Up on Women is witty, warm-hearted and achingly real. Neal Doran has created a love story for our times that will make you laugh, cry and fall in love with Dan Taylor. I loved it!' – Miranda Dickinson, bestselling author of Take a Look at Me Now and I'll Take New York

Perpetually single Dan Taylor is so terrible at meeting women his own mother suspects he might be gay. So best friends — and smug married couple — Hannah and Rob insist he needs some serious man management. Taking matters into their own hands, they decide to make him their ‘Project’ and set to work on finding him a girlfriend — one that might actually stick around long enough to meet his mother.

A new wardrobe, a better haircut and a slick online profile later and an unwitting Dan is ready to be launched on the London dating scene. But miracles don’t just happen, and when he does achieve some success with women, it’s not in the way anyone expected.

Praise for Neal Doran

'Neal Doran is a very funny writer' John O'Farrell, author of The Man Who Forgot His Wife

'A big-hearted breath of hilarious fresh-air, Dan Taylor Is Giving Up On Women is a tender, touching and terrifically funny debut. The crises, the crushes and the cringes of an honest and sharp look at a very modern romance, treat yourself.' - Richard Asplin, author of T-shirt and Genes

'Full of witty one-liners, Dan Taylor Is Giving Up On Women is a hilarious examination of the morals of modern-day dating." - Matt Dunn, bestselling author of The Ex-Boyfriends' Handbook and A Day at the Office.

Neal has a knack for creating very funny descriptions and scenes. I had many laughs throughout the whole book and had to force myself to put it down at night.

Doran is staying at the level of rather unremarkable and superficial development of the novel's characters whilst driving the punchlines so hard they become predictable. The way Dan's friends and office mates, as well as the work performed there is described is a rather wearisome carricature of how chave 20-somethings might think and behave. To me, this is all rahter far fetched as is the principal theme of the book, the hero's obsession with dating a girl that might like him. I guess the aim of the author is to make him endearing in his struggles but this becomes somewhat forced and repetitive as the story plods on. Doran comes across as a someone who strives to be a contemporary Oscar Wilde but lacks the dose of subtlety and wit that would be required to get somewhere not even close...

BEWARE

This book is only for women (and some men who can laugh about men).

I enjoyed it very much - thank you Dan Taylor!

This book is not my normal genre at all, but I really enjoyed it. Very readable, so funny in parts that I kept my husband awake with my giggles, and is just a good read. Also, if you have ever spent time in London, this will make you miss all its funny quirks!

4.0 von 5 Sternen Don't give up on Dan Taylor 9. April 2014
Von James Bailey - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Kindle Edition|Verifizierter Kauf
This was a fun and fairly fast read. It's not necessarily the deepest book you'll run across, but it's not really meant to be. I bought it looking for something in the Nick Hornby range, but this didn't quite fill that bill. The best way I can describe it is by calling it a "chick lit" book for guys. (Though women would probably like it just as well, it's not really just a guy's book, it's just written from a guy's perspective.)

Dan Taylor is, to put it mildly, not smooth with the ladies. He's a nice guy, but that's not enough. His two best friends, the married Rob and Hannah, resolve to find him someone, but he must do as they say and go out with whomever they fix him up with. Absurdity ensues in the form of horrific blind dates, some of which end with police interrogations.

Dan eventually finds love, but not where one suspects he will at the start of the book. I don't want to give spoilers, because the second half of the book is where things get good and it's best if you don't know what's going on ahead of time.

About a third of the way through I was having a few doubts. The book at times gets a bit dialogue heavy, almost as if you're reading a screenplay of a lightweight sitcom. But I felt like it redeemed itself down the stretch. It's well paced and there was enough tension in the last few chapters to keep me wanting to know how it ended.

Do you use your e-reader to read in public or try to sneak a few pages at work? Then don't attempt to read this because you'll be laughing out loud with tears pouring down your face. So many occurrences in this book will ring a personal memory bell that will make you writhe with embarrassment or hoot with laughter.

*4.5 Stars* Rounded Up

At first this story was kind of confusing but after a page or two everything is cleared up. This novel is very funny and I was laughing out loud at moments which is rare because I usually just chuckle here or there but I just couldn't help myself with this book.

Yes, the story itself is admittedly a bit predictable but it is written very well and keeps your attention. The path it takes to get there isn't necessarily as predictable as the ending. It's not all humor though because there are some more serious moments and at times heartbreaking ones. I didn't physically cry but came close a few times.

Rating: PG-13 or up (There isn't anything too graphic. There is profanity and sex but it isn't described.)
