30 old Ellie Cavanaugh is still struggling with the horrible memories of her sister cruel homicide some 22 years ago. It had been her testimony, that sent Rob Westerfield, a nineteen year old scapegrace - who has already been suspected of having planned to rob his own grandmother and left her close to death - to prison. After her sisters' death, her parents' marriage broke up, her mother died of sickness and alcoholism and her father moved away, leaving her with a sorrowful life. Ellie is now working as an investigative reporter in Atlanta, when Rob's 3rd parole is coming close. She packs her bags and sets off for Westchester, where she once lived a happy life with her sister and parents. Convinced that Westerfield is guilty in charge of her sister's death, she starts writing on a book about him, digging out all the nasty little details, that extinguish him as a terrible person. She also sets up a website, publishing there all she finds out about him and therefore gets into great danger. Suddenly she has to fear for her own safety and even her life, when someone sets fire to her flat or follows her during the nights, threatening her.
Hoping that by eventually proving Rob's guilt she might be able to find some peace and the feeling of being home somewhere, she stands the threats and goes on with her investigations.
The reader finds himself strongly connected with Ellie, on the one hand because Clark is writing in the first person, on the other hand because the story is very involving. You take part in her movements and emotions, and as always in Clark's books, you're not sure about who is the murder and who is giulty until the very last page.
