Mehr über den Autor

Having traveled to over 25 countries, lived in the American South, in California, Las Vegas, and briefly in England; Kailin Gow feels blessed to be able to use her experiences and inspirations to bring characters and stories from the places she visit, to life.

From visiting Romania, she was asked to write stories about vampires; visiting the Black Forest in Germany and seeing the castles of Europe inspired her to write fantasy; visiting Asia's mystical mountains inspired her to write action adventure and mythological dystopians. From her experience in college as a peer counselor and her volunteer work with women's shelters, she was inspired to write contemporary romance with social issues for women, new adults, young adults, and teens. Having faced adversity, including battling stereotypes and bullying, Kailin Gow has become a well-known speaker and figure in media. Her adventurous bold spirit has taken her around the world, where she has ridden on top of elephants through jungles, hand-fed sting rays, studied kung fu from a Shaolin Temple monk, and learned cooking from a celebrity chef.

Compelled to write her first fiction book because of 9/11, Kailin Gow now has over 100 fiction books published with a handful of non-fiction books.

If it were possible I would award this novel no stars, but ten lavishly decorated cupcakes with lavender icing instead. At least it is certainly nice to know, that in 998 years from now (3010) people still are driving around in Porsches, drink cherry soda and coffee, eat burgers, pizza and spaghetti. The novel could not weave its magic for me. It lacks a "degree of reality" (which even the coffee couldn't re-introduce, quite the contrary). The often pompous and deliberately old-fashioned language cannot gloss over what the author lacks in skill to describe real people, real emotions and feelings. Kailin Gow and fans: Please forgive me, but I consider this book a waste of time and money.

2.0 von 5 Sternen Why did I waste my money? 5. Januar 2012

I read Desire based on all of the great reviews, and also, because I've been really into dystopian books lately. I've read the Hunger Games, Divergent, and Delirium all recently, and maybe that's why this one was such a disappointment for me. It just can't compare to those awesome books.

The premise of Desire caught my interest; it's pretty similar to the book Matched, but had a magical aspect that set it apart. My biggest complaint is the writing. The dialogue was contrived and unnatural, and so were the scenarios. It just didn't flow well at all. And it was very cliched. How many times do I have to read about a beautiful girl who has two gorgeous guys fight over her? It's so overdone and isn't interesting anymore.

My other problem with Desire was the big secret about Kama. I won't give anything away, but it was so ridicules, I couldn't help but laugh. It's like finding out that Edward from Twilight isn't a vampire but a leprechaun. I did finish Desire, so it wasn't completely terrible, but I wish I wouldn't have wasted my money.

1.0 von 5 Sternen Poor Reading for Young Women 22. Juli 2012

Lovers of teen fiction, dystopian fiction, fantasy, etc: you can do SO MUCH BETTER!

The description of the book and bio of the author, Kailin Gow, suggests that this is a good choice of a novel for tween girls. As a university writing instructor who also tutors girls in their early teens, and as a reader and fan of young adult fiction, I have to say that this is a really deceptive way to present the novel. It might be entertaining, but it is seriously *terribly* written. I don't mean that it's not going to win a Pulitzer; I mean that it is riddled with actual errors that would get it a low grade in any decent English class. Girls in their early teens who are developing their own writing skills will be poorly served by this kind of example of "publishable" writing. It is clearly not professionally edited. I haven't looked into the background of the publisher, but I wouldn't be surprised if the novel were published by the author's own media company, and/or that the positive reviews come from her friends or some particular fan base.

If you want to read what is maybe the most hilariously bad novel I've ever seen in print, then go ahead? But if you actually want something fun to read, please read *anything* else, there are so many real and well-written (or at least grammatically correct!) teen novels out there!

Update: Okay, so to put some of this in perspective: Gow is a Founder and Managing Director of Sparklesoup, the publisher (at least according to some googled info). So I guess she is pretty much publishing her own books? Furthermore, a number of the five star reviewers have only rated a handful of books on Amazon, most or all of them by Gow. I honestly think the whole rating system for this book has been rigged, which is really not in the spirit of Amazon's rating system. All in all, not cool.

This biggest problem I had with this book was poor writing...Also, the characters are not well developed, and the main character is just simply annoying...Will NOT be reading the rest of the series...

Found this quite enjoyable and easy to read I was initially turned off because of the reviews so I borrowed it from my friend instead of purchasing it I getting more and more convinced that the haters who post 1 star reviews are often competing authors who attack the fellow authorsbjust to get a competitive edge. Real reviewers are free to speak their minds but spite is wrong. I enjoyed reading this book and found it clever and suspenseful but thats my opinion.

This book was just so bad.

I am always happy to give a book the benefit of the doubt, but the writing was awful and there were SO many mistakes! I can't believe that this book passed over an editor's desk at ANY time.

The plot was all over the place, glossing over storylines that I wanted to know more about. The main character seemed soulless and shallow ... like when she couldn't believe Liam's father was 'bad' because he was so attractive. Really?

And this is based in the Year 3010. Come on...! The fact that they received their Life Plan on a chip IN THE POST is just ridiculous.

Even titling it "A Dystopian Fantasy" is just silly, like the author just wanted to hop onto the latest bandwagon.

To be honest I couldn't finish the book so maybe I did miss some vital plot twist or something but I just don't feel it's right that anyone should read this shoddily written book.

And for some reason, the high star ratings on this book just seem 'fixed'.

(apologies .. this review really sounds harsh but I feel cheated)
