Herman Mudgett, who called himself Dr. H. H. Holmes, seemed the epitome of the late 19th century "Golden Age": he was a well-dressed, charismatic, self-made entrepreneur (think Andrew Carnegie). Unfortunately for his many victims, he was also a liar, bigamist, debtor, con man, and murderer. The setting for several of his murders was the bizarre urban "castle" he built in Chicago--a ramshackle construction with mazelike corridors, soundproof rooms, sealed vaults, oversized furnaces, and chutes leading down to the cellar. Holmes's undoing was an insurance scam in which he planned to use a corpse supplied by a doctor to fake his partner's death, but ended up killing the partner, his wife, and his five children. The Boston Book Review wrote, "[Harold] Schechter's account of this charming, repulsive monster is both an astonishing piece of popular history as well as a near clinical analysis of as sinister a killer as this country has ever produced."

The ghoulish saga of Dr. H.H. Holmes, the dapper devil who established himself as America's first serial killer 100 years ago. Schechter (American Literature and Culture/Queens College, CUNY; Deranged, not reviewed) offers a disjointed opening before settling into his tale. He begins with a dramatic depiction of the Great Chicago Fire of 1871. He then writes of a New Hampshire boy named Herman who is 11 years in 1871; Herman has a penchant for skinning and deboning live animals. The next time we see him, it is under the alias of Dr. H.H. Holmes, venturing into the Chicago suburb of Englewood to weasel a profitable drugstore from its dying patron and his overworked wife. Holmes then constructs a three- story castle containing such delights as a greased shaft that ends in a dark cellar filled with vats of chemical corrosives; this labyrinthine chamber of horrors becomes one of his murder devices. Under investigation by the government for financial irregularities, Holmes sets fire to the castle, flees Chicago, and launches a series of insurance scams. He murders his oafish assistant, Benjamin Pitezel, and forces one of Pitezel's four threadbare children to identify her father's decayed body so that he can collect a $10,000 life insurance policy. Eventually Holmes is discovered and several decomposed bodies are exhumed from under the remains of the castle. In custody, Holmes confesses bluntly, ``I was born with the devil in me. I could not help the fact that I was a murderer, no more than the poet can help the inspiration to sing.'' With a total of 27 victims, Holmes was tried (the case became a public sensation). After his conviction for Pitezel's murder, Holmes confessed to 26 other killings--some for insurance money, some out of sexual jealousy, others for fear the victims would give him away. Rather than psychoanalyzing his psychotic subject, Schechter sticks firmly to the gory narrative of his crimes, in which the description of the murderous castle stands as a spectacular centerpiece. As Dr. Holmes is the Magician of Deception- so is the Author of this book I unfortunately bought. All of the real amazing stuff that still waits to be uncovered is hidden in the mud of Mr. Mudgett. The only weak attempt to stir in this mud is abandoned, the puzzle of the strange identities. Mudgett is the master of deception, even deceiving his students of today. Mudgett is sealed in tons of concrete, blocking the concrete truth of this model of monsters much worse to come...

"Depraved" tells the story of the first serial killer in American history, Herman Mudgett. Mudgett, through cunning and sadistic genius, murdered perhaps as many as 200 people in his customized "murder castle" (an exact number of victims isn't know since Mudgett lied through his teeth about most everything). The macabre castle had air-tight, soundproof rooms in which to kill victims and also had a crematorium in which to dispose of bodies. This story could be taken from the headlines of today but was not. It happened over a century ago. Definately worth the time of true-crime readers.

I have read many books out there about serial killers, mass murders, as well as being a criminal justice major. The topic of perverse, hateful, and demented individuals really gets my blood flowing. Don't take that wrong of course. This book I might add does just the trick. Schechter, one of my favorite authors on the subject, leads us down a path in which there is no turning back from. Once you find out about the amazing Mr. H.H. HOlmes...the "other" serial killers look like an old pair of panties that your great grandmother used to wear. READ THIS BOOK. I am about to embark on the journey once more...because it is immensely gratifying...(if you're interested in these kooks of course!)

Superb writing
This is a chilling book that explores a long-forgotten, though significant chapter of American crime. Fascinating and very well written.
