Kurzbeschreibung

15. Oktober 2012
The Definitive Solutions-Oriented Guide to IBM(r) DB2(r) for z/OS(r): Now Fully Updated for Both v9 and v10! The largest database tuning performance gains can often be obtained from tuning application code, and applications that use SQL to retrieve data are the best candidates for tuning. This well-organized, easy-to-understand reference brings together more than 100 SQL-related skills and techniques that any developer can use to build and optimize DB2 applications for consistently superior performance. DB2 tuning expert Tony Andrews ("Tony the Tuner") draws on more than 20 years of DB2-related experience, empowering you to take performance into your own hands, whether you're writing new software or tuning existing systems. Tony shows you exactly how to clear bottlenecks, resolve problems, and improve both speed and reliability. This book fully reflects the latest SQL programming best practices for DB2 V9 and DB2 V10 on z/OS: techniques that are taught in no other book and are rarely covered in general DB2 SQL courses. Drawing on his extensive consulting experience and highly praised training with Themis Inc., Tony also presents practical checklists and an invaluable 15-step methodology for optimizing virtually any DB2 application. Coverage includes * Empowering developers on knowing what to do and where to look in resolving performance problems in queries or programs* Providing many programming and SQL coding examples* Establishing standards and guidelines that lead to high-performance SQL* Implementing time-efficient code walkthroughs to ensure that your standards are followed* Focusing on the small number of SQL statements that consume the most resources* Identifying simple solutions that deliver the most sizable benefits* Optimizing performance by rewriting query predicates more efficiently* Providing a better understanding of SQL optimization and Runstat statistics* Recognizing opportunities to tweak your code more effectively than the Optimizer* Optimizing SQL code with COBOL applications* Efficiently checking for the existence of data, rows, or tables* Using Runstats' newest capabilities to consistently optimize paths to data

Tony Andrews has more than 23 years' experience in the development of IBM DB2 relational database applications. Most of this time, he has provided development and consulting services to Fortune 500 companies and government agencies. Tony has written literally thousands of queries and programs during his development years, and he has also served as a DB2 database analyst. For the past 10 years, Tony has been splitting his time between consulting engagements and training. His main focus is to teach today's developers the ways of RDMS application design, development, and SQL programming- always with a special emphasis on improving performance. Tony's training, consulting, and speaking engagements are through his employer, Themis, Inc., an onsite and virtual instructor-led, hands-on IT training company recognized internationally. It offers more than 400 IT courses and helps to support International DB2 Users Group North America (IDUG NA) and Europe, Middle East, and Africa (IDUG EMEA), along with many DB2 user groups. Tony is a current IBM champion and regular lecturer at industry conferences and local user groups. You may have seen him present at such events as IDUG NA and EMEA. He is well known for his "Top 25+ Tuning Tips for Developers" presentation. Tony graduated from Ohio State University with a major in business and a minor in mathematical statistics. He currently resides in Dublin, Ohio.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Efficiency is everything! 5. Januar 2013
Von Straightforward - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
If you're like me, you have deadlines. You don't have a lot of time to spend wading through vast texts about theoretical SQL performance. You need quick tips to produce better results - today! In this book, Andrews delivers valuable tuning tips in a very efficient, concise way. All value, no fluff. Just the way I want it. I found a mistake I was making in the first 5 pages.

A tip will contain the best way to write a query, why it's better, and syntax examples in a "This way, not that way" style. The book contains over 100 tips, and has 4 or 5 bonus chapters that talk about coding standards, how to (efficiently) do code walk-throughs, etc.

It's on my shelf at work.

4.0 von 5 Sternen Good reference for SQL developers 16. August 2013
Von Paul Turpin - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
I have had the opportunity to hear Tony present a lot of the tips in the book and his presentations were excellent. I was looking forward to seeing the tips in book form and have been impressed by what I found in the book.

The books title makes it sounds like the tips are only for DB2 for z/OS, but many of the tips apply to DB2 for LUW also.

There is some good information on Explains sprinkled throughout the book, but I wish there was a whole chapter (or Appendix) devoted to that topic.

This is certainly a reference I will use frequently.

5.0 von 5 Sternen Great Tuning Suggestions !!! 30. Juni 2013
Von N.G.M - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch|Verifizierter Kauf
I have been working as an Application Performance Tuning specialist for 15 years, most of it focusing on tuning DB2 SQL statements for application developers. I recently purchased this book on Amazon by Tony Andrews as an addition to my existing set of reference materials, and found it to be one of the best I have seen in quite a while. A large number of optimization suggestions are presented, covering basic recommendations that apply to z/OS DB2 SQL regardless of the DB2 Version, to hints concerning some of the more recent features found in DB2 Versions 9 and 10. Each optimization hint begins with a brief description of the feature, and is followed by great examples of how the SQL statements should be written to take advantage of the recommendation. Most of the book focuses on the optimization ideas, but also has a chapter on DB2 Hints to tweak SQL queries, as well a chapter on Standards and Guidelines. In conclusion, the book is not designed to present extensive details for all of the SQL features Tony presents; you will need to examine IBM's DB2 reference materials for that. Its real purpose is to summarize in one place, the many DB2 optimization features that are available, but which you may not otherwise become aware of in your day to day work with DB2.

5.0 von 5 Sternen This book is at the top of my reference list. 29. April 2013
Von George M. Shomsky - Veröffentlicht auf Amazon.com
Format:Taschenbuch
Everyday I review and write SQL. The SQL I write is ranges from simple to very complex. I also am utilized as developement support for SQL questions. The reference material I use on a daily basis has been collected from classes I've taken and IDUG Tech Conferences attended.
This book is very good and I have put it at the top of the list of my reference material. The tips and hints in the book as well as the examples are excellent. I have already found several examples in this book I have passed on to others. I recomend this book to anybody looking to start or expand their collection of reference material
